Mark Wood's Big Claim On Bumrah: 'I Am Telling You He'll Play Both Tests...'

It's not either Edgbaston or Lord's -- Mark Wood firmly believes that Jasprit Bumrah will play both of the next two Tests of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
England fast-bowler Mark Wood believes Jasprit Bumrah will play both the second Test at Edgbaston and the third at Lord's of the ongoing Anderson-Trophy. Wood, who's recovering from an injury and out till the fifth Test, thinks Bumrah 'got to' play the second game to help India overcome the 1-0 deficit after the first match at Headingley, while he also won't want to miss the chance of getting on the Lord's honors board.
From chief selector Ajit Agarkar to head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill, all confirmed before the series that India will not risk their best bowler beyond three Tests to avoid a serious injury. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said on Monday that Bumrah was 'available' but added that the team were yet to make a call on him being in the 11 when the match begins on Wednesday.
'He's going to play them two, I am telling you," Wood told Michael Atherton in a Sky Sports show. 'I think he'll play them both… He's got to because they can't afford to go 2-0 down, so you want your best bowler. There's no way he's saying I am not playing at Lord's. I think he'll want to play both games. Let's just say India win the next one and it's 1-1, I still think they'll want him to make the difference to get them ahead. Every overseas bowler wants to get on that board and he'll be the same," he added.
Former cricketer Atheron said India will need him most at Edgbaston and at Old Trafford (fourth Test) but agreed that he won't want to miss the Lord's game.
'In cricketing terms, he should certainly play Edgbaston and I'll say think carefully about Old Trafford because that's the kind of ground where pace and reverse swing is very important but as you say, every cricketer wants to play at Lord's and get on that honors board. So I do think they should play Kuldeep Yadav. I think if they had Kuldeep in the team, they'd have won that (Headingley) game," Atherton said.
If Bumrah doesn't play, India have Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh waiting on the bench.

India's reported changes for Edgbaston Test: Bumrah to be replaced by this pacer; Sai Sudharsan set to be dropped

The second Test between India and England gets underway at Edgbaston, Birmingham on Wednesday. And following their disappointing five-wicket defeat at Headingley, the Shubman Gill-led visitors are likely to make several changes to the lineup. read more Jasprit Bumrah and B Sai Sudharsan are likely to sit out of the second Test against England at Edgbaston. Reuters/AP After an enthralling series opener in Leeds where the first Test between India and England boiled down to the final hour of the final day at Headingley, the two teams are set to lock horns once again, with the second Test set to get underway a few hours from now. While cricket fans will be hoping for another humdinger of a contest between the two giants of Test cricket at Birmingham's Edgbaston, which will be hosting the second of five Tests starting Wednesday, the Indian cricket team and their fans will be hoping to end up on the right side of the result this time. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Ahead of toss on the opening day of the second Test, we take a look at some of the team changes Shubman Gill is likely to announce at the toss: Bumrah out, Akash in Both Jasprit Bumrah as well as head coach Gautam Gambhir had already discussed the former's workload during the tour of England, wherein he would not be playing more than three Tests keeping his recent back injury in mind. Shubman Gill is reportedly set to name Akash Deep as Jasprit Bumrah's replacement in the second Test. Image: AFP Given the short turnaround between the second and third Tests at Edgbaston and Lord's respectively, Bumrah was reportedly rested for the second and is being kept fresh for the third. With Bumrah reportedly out, India were left with Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh, the latter yet to make his Test debut, or play Kuldeep Yadav as the lone front-line spinner. According to a report on The Indian Express, Akash is set to be named as Bumrah's replacement for the second Test, meaning Arshdeep might have to wait a bit longer for his maiden Test cap. Thakur out, Reddy in This was a no-brainer for the Indian team after the events of the Headingley Test, where Thakur not only failed to make a meaningful contribution with the bat, he also leaked runs at over five an over in both innings and did not make an impact with the ball until his double strike in the afternoon session on the final day. Nitish Reddy was consistent with the bat in the tour of Australia, scoring a century in the fourth Test in Melbourne, and the team management will be hoping his presence lends more solidity to the lower middle order and prevents another batting collapse. And the Express report mentions he's set to be included in place of Thakur at Edgbaston, despite the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin coming to the latter's defence despite the defeat at Headingley. Sai Sudharsan out, Nair at No 3 This one might sound harsh for young Sai Sudharsan, but the young opener from Tamil Nadu is set to be dropped after making his debut at Headingley, where he was dismissed for a four-ball duck in the first innings before departing for 30 in the second. Karun Nair reportedly is set to move up the batting order after getting dismissed for 0 and 20 at Headingley. Image: Reuters The report, however, adds that it's Karun Nair who's set to move up the order to the position previously occupied by current skipper Shubman Gill – and Cheteshwar Pujara and Rahul Dravid before him. Nair's reported move frees up a slot in the middle order – where the team management is reportedly drafting in Washington Sundar. Which means India will have spin-bowling all-rounders Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja as well as Reddy between the top five and the tail-enders – which skipper Gill and coach Gambhir hopes translates to meaningful partnerships down the order. ‘India's need more important than Jasprit Bumrah's wish to play at Lord's': Former ENG batter says star pacer must play Edgbaston Test

Former England batter Mark Butcher could not wrap his around the probablity of India's seam spearhead Jasprit Bumrah missing the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Edgbaston, starting Wednesday. Butcher felt that Bumrah has had an adequate break since India's series-opening five-wicket defeat to England in Headingley last week and said the team's requirement was more important than the pacer's wish to return to play at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground in the third Test, scheduled to begin next week on June 10. 'Bumrah is going to be a huge talking point as to whether or not this is one of his three Test matches. I think it has to be, it absolutely has to be. Six-day break after Headingley, 1-0 down, he plays. I know he wants to play at Lord's but the needs of the team and the series are more important than his wish to play a Test at Lord's,' Butcher said on the Wisden Cricket Weekly Podcast. 'And who knows, he might get through this one okay and be fine for Lord's, and then you take your chances at the back-end,' Butcher added. Bumrah was head and shoulders above his bowling peers at Leeds when he claimed a superb first-innings five-wicket haul while the rest of the pacers were slammed left and right by England batters. While he went wicketless in the last innings, Bumrah's pace partner Prasidh Krishna ended the match with woeful figures of 5/224, his 6.40 economy the worst of all pacers in history to have conceded as many runs in a match. Butcher said that it was imperative that India consider bringing in a left-arm pace or spin option in Arshdeep Singh or Kuldeep Yadav to replace Prasidh. 'First and foremost, depending on what you've got in you squad, you try and pick bowlers that the opposition – England, with their shot-making preference – would like the least. What they would very much enjoy are mid to low eighties seam bowlers. What they would enjoy much less than that is left-arm leg spin, if you have one – and India do have one. That would be the starting point,' said Butcher. 'A left-arm swing bowler is also perhaps an option. If Arshdeep [Singh] comes in, I think Prasidh Krishna was found wanting…. If you can manage it, you go Siraj, Bumrah, Arshdeep, Kuldeep, Jadeja, and you take the cards where they fall with your batting. Simply because – I said it at the time during the first Test match – I couldn't see how Shardul was going to make enough runs to make up for his lack of potency with the ball,' he added.
