Dig! XX review – amazing film of battling 90s psych rockers revisited two decades on
After 20 years, Ondi Timoner has rereleased her riveting and colossal documentary study of two psych rock bands, the Dandy Warhols and the Brian Jonestown Massacre, and their epic dual story of success and failure. There is about 40 minutes of extra material and a present-day coda that reveals, among other things, that each band has a member who now sells real estate. That ending, brutally and suddenly visiting grey-haired middle age on these gorgeous rock'n'roll exquisites, reminded me of the Fellini-esque dream opening to Woody Allen's Stardust Memories in which two trains, one carrying life's winners and the other with hapless losers, wind up at the same dusty rubbish heap.
Dig! XX, which took years to shoot, is alternately narrated by the Warhols' frontman, Courtney Taylor-Taylor, and the BJM's relentlessly goofy tambourine player, Joel Gion, and it shows the complex 'frenmity' of the two bands. Almost from the outset, it seemed as if the Dandy Warhols were destined for commercial success tainted by feelings of selling out, and their pals the Brian Jonestown Massacre were heading for failure redeemed by a magnificent and self-destructive kind of integrity.
All of them were devoted to the traditional excesses and entitlements of rock'n'roll and enamoured of their 1960s image; the BJM's guitarist Matt Hollywood even affected John Lennon specs. But it is quite late on in the film that someone makes a very good point: 'Sixties bands got into drugs. But they were famous first.' Nowhere in the film does any band-member reflect on the self-fulfilling prophecy of success and failure in their joke-names: Andy Warhol, triumphant and world-famous in the depthless world of celebrity for a lot longer than 15 minutes, and Brian Jones, dying young (or living for ever) after a mysterious accident in his swimming pool.
The undisputed star of the film is surely the BJM's leader, Anton Newcombe, a snake-hipped and bedraggled Adonis who provides pure on-camera gold with his outrageous behaviour, motormouthed self-pity and disdain for everyone else; the tone is set when he blows the band's entire tour budget on sitars. The BJM suspect, with good reason, that the Warhols are jealous of their authentic rock'n'roll chaos; they live in the real thing which the prissier Warhols can only fabricate in their photoshoots, one of which takes place without permission in the BJM's squalid shared apartment. The bands both tour endlessly, an ordeal of hardship and frustration, chasing the breakout success that only happens to the Dandy Warhols because they are the ones with discipline and don't have full-on fistfights on stage. (Amazingly, gloriously, and also tragically, the ageing and reunited BJM have a public punch-up in 2023.)
But does the rock'n'roll world camouflage the truth about Newcombe's mental state and drug abuse? Do we confer the ironised title of damaged genius on him by not seeing his pain and unhappiness? He goes in and out of rehab, something the film can't really show. And, for me, Gion is the other enigma: always smirking, gurning, wise-cracking – always on. Is there a hidden truth he is not showing us? A gripping and desperately sad story.
Dig! XX is in UK cinemas on 25 March for one night, then on limited release in cinemas from 28 March.

Described as 'unbelievably epic' and 'riveting' by fans, it received a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score for the second series, and here's hoping the third instalment will be even better. The Dune-esque science fiction show, loosely based on the book series of the same name by Isaac Asimov, first landed on the small screen in 2021 and returned for a second in July 2023. It follows The Foundation, a band of exiles who discover that the only way to save the Galactic Empire from destruction is to defy it, embarking on a journey to save humanity and rebuild civilisation. Season two ended with an explosive finale that saw a major character's death and a 152-year time jump. Now, The Foundation has become established far beyond its humble beginnings, while the Cleonic Dynasty's Empire has dwindled. But a threat to the entire galaxy appears in the form of a warlord known as The Mule, whose sights are set on ruling the universe through mind control. Metro TV editor Sabrina Barr reviewed Foundation when it first aired in September 2021, awarding the 'epic' sci-fi series four stars. 'There's a lot to unravel in Foundation, and the first two episodes – while utterly enthralling – may be quite confusing for some. 'If you don't mind scratching your head at every turn, Foundation is a fantastic watch in every respect, from the visuals to the score, the performances and the action. 'While there is a lot of information to absorb in the opening episodes, you get the feeling that throughout the 10-episode arc, everything will – hopefully – start to come together and make a lot more sense. Season three of Foundation lands on Apple TV Plus on July 11, followed by new episodes weekly every Friday until September 12. But it's not the only hit series coming back to streaming in July. TV fans of fantasy, romance and comedy alike are waiting for cliffhangers to be resolved as their favourite shows get ready to return — some of them for the final time. Netflix has kept its cards close to its chest when it comes to what to expect from The Sandman season two, but fans of the comics will have an idea of what's in store. It begins just a few weeks after the events of the first instalment and sees Dream (Tom Sturridge) return to Hell to meet with Lucifer Morningstar (Gwendoline Christie). The Endless family, who are the embodiments of destiny, death, desire, despair, and delirium in human form, will also return for season two of the hit fantasy series. There had been much speculation around the future of The Sandman after creator Neil Gaiman, who is also the writer of the original The Sandman comic books, was accused of sexual assault in July last year, allegations which he denies. It has since been confirmed that the second season of The Sandman will be its last. Showrunner Allan Heinberg said in a statement in January: 'The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream's story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough for one more season.' Where to watch: The Sandman Season 2 Volume One (episodes 1–6) lands on Netflix on July 3, followed by Volume 2 (episodes 7–11) on July 24. The will be a special bonus episode on July 31. Amazon Prime Video's smash hit series, based on Jenny Han's best-selling book trilogy, also returns in July for its third and final season. The coming-of-age drama follows Belly (Lola Tung), a teenage girl who finds herself in a love triangle with family friends and brothers Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno). Season one ended with Belly in a relationship with Conrad, but when things don't work out in season two, she finds happiness with Jeremiah. In season three, the trio are now on the brink of adulthood, and the trailer teases Belly and Jeremiah's engagement — but it's clear she can't stop thinking about Conrad. The time has come for Belly to confront her true feelings about the Fisher brothers, but who will she choose? Where to watch: The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 lands on Amazon Prime Video on July 16. Episodes will be released weekly until the finale on September 17. Set in a Mexican holiday resort in the 80s, Acapulco is a bingeable under-the-radar comedy that's first season boasts a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score. The show is inspired by the film How to Be a Latin Lover, with its star Eugenio Derbez playing the role of Máximo Gallardo, a man who came from humble beginnings but is now a wealthy Mexican businessman living a luxurious life in Malibu. For its fourth and final season, the synopsis reads: 'Present-day Máximo works tirelessly to restore Las Colinas to its former glory before the grand reopening. In 1986, when a competitor claims the number one spot in the annual ranking of Acapulco's Best Hotels, young Máximo (Enrique Arrizon) will do whatever it takes to get back on top and secure Las Colinas' future.' Where to watch: The first two episodes of Acapulco Season 4 land on Apple TV Plus on July 23, with new episodes weekly thereafter. This Netflix sports documentary gives viewers exclusive access to three NFL quarterbacks and their families. Season one culminated in the 2023 Super Bowl, which saw Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes celebrating his team's win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Now, season two will follow Joe Burrow at the start of his fifth season with the Cincinnati Bengals and Jared Goff of the Detroit Lions, while Kirk Cousins, who left the Minnesota Vikings after a torn Achilles tendon in 2023, returns to Quarterback for the second time, now with the Atlanta Falcons. 'Perfect' series compared to Black Mirror streaming free despite studio's controversial move
The show's star has spoken out against the decision A series that's been hailed as 'literally perfect' and likened to Black Mirror, which was subsequently 'deleted' by the original studio, is now available for free streaming. All episodes of Made For Love can be streamed on Channel 4 at no additional cost. This includes both seasons one and two, originally released between 2022 and 2023. Described by the broadcaster as a comedy-drama with a Black Mirror-esque vibe, the plot revolves around a woman who attempts to escape her stifling marriage. However, her tech tycoon husband has implanted a device in her brain, enabling him to monitor her every move and emotion. The lead role of Hazel in Made For Love is played by Cristin Milioti, known for her roles as the Mother in How I Met Your Mother and Sofia Falcone in The Penguin. She also featured in two acclaimed Black Mirror episodes, including USS Callister. The cast also boasts Ray Ramano, Paula Abdul and Billy Magnussen, known for his roles in Boardwalk Empire and the Lilo and Stitch remake, reports Surrey Live. Despite garnering a dedicated fanbase and achieving an impressive score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, the series was cancelled after its second season. Moreover, the US studio behind it decided to 'delete' the show from its own platforms. The move resulted in the show no longer being available to US viewers, with Warner Bros pulling it from HBO Max - a surprising call considering the platform had originally commissioned it. It's thought this move was financially driven and Milioti herself recently voiced her discontent on a podcast. In an interview with Marc Maron for the WTF Podcast, she expressed: "It's so f**ked up. That happened because, umm, we were a tax write-off. I did it for Max... I just know that they ripped it off the platform... like when they ripped Westworld off. And it's such a bummer because, you know, that was three years of our lives." Milioti continued to share her thoughts: "There are so many parts of that show that have become like eerily prescient. It was all about people in this world of like advanced technology and utterly unable to communicate with each other. You can't even buy it. It's so weird... I'm also like... it's like on a USB stick somewhere probably. Just put it up." However, Milioti might not be aware that Channel 4 offers UK viewers a chance to rediscover this hidden gem, with many devotees eagerly advocating for others to watch it. One viewer took to the internet to voice their praise: "This show is literally perfect. A MUST WATCH dare I say. The casting of the actors, the dark comedy, the premise and the concept regarding the future of love was done so well. And also the pacing was very good I might add, none of the scenes seemed to drag. A perfect binge. I was hooked from the first scene. The show kept up the intrigue and the comic relief, while also maintaining emotional depth. Billy Magnussen and Cristin Milioti's acting skills: spot on." Another fan chimed in, expressing admiration for its uniqueness: "This is one of the most original shows I've seen in a long time. The pacing and execution is perfect. The different dynamics they explore tow the line of brevity and weight in such a beautiful way while still having a great balance of comedy. I'm so excited about this show." On the topic of how it stands out despite similarities to other programmes, a third individual shared their viewpoint: "I was hooked from the first seconds of watching. I personally think that Billy Magnussen is a highly underrated actor so I was elated when I saw he was starring. He's great in it just as I figured he would be .This show is not like all the others being churned out right now. Prince William to ditch 'ridiculous' tradition in shake-up from King Charles
Prince William may abandon a royal tradition that has been passed down through the generations and is reminiscent of a Disney movie, a royal source has claimed Prince William is facing calls to break with a long-standing Royal Family tradition deemed "ridiculous" and fit for a Disney fairy tale. As the Prince of Wales, who recently turned 43, begins to contemplate his coronation ceremony, there is speculation that he may opt for a more low-key affair. His father, King Charles, has already set the tone by shortening his coronation ceremony by half an hour compared to Queen Elizabeth II's three-hour extravaganza. According to Sunday Times Royal Editor Roya Nikkah, Prince William has hinted that his coronation will be a departure from the norm, seeking a ceremony that is both "relevant" to modern times and "unifying" for the Commonwealth. A source close to the Prince revealed that his coronation may be more subdued, drawing inspiration from the simple coronations of medieval kings. They suggested that the ceremony should focus on elements that are pertinent to today's society, reflect diversity, and strip away unnecessary pomp. One proposal is to do away with the Imperial State Crown, a £5 billion masterpiece crafted in 1937, featuring 3,170 precious stones. The crown has been a staple of coronations, with Charles donning it to lead the procession after his crowning. However, some argue that it is time to retire this symbol of a bygone era.
