Top Republicans rally around Bondi as MAGA rages over Epstein

Axios5 hours ago
Senior GOP lawmakers are rallying behind Attorney General Pam Bondi, largely siding with President Trump that she should stay in her office.
Why it matters: The Republican Party is tearing itself apart over the handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files, with MAGA faithful turning on Trump for the first time in his second term.
"It's definitely a full reversal on what was all said beforehand, and people are just not willing to accept it," Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) told the New York Times on Monday.
"The president is just forgiving her, because she's a loyal soldier and he likes her and he doesn't want to go through the messy confirmation process of getting someone else," Megyn Kelly said on her radio program on Monday.
But Trump's congressional Republican allies are backing him up.
"The president seems happy with her," Senate Majority Leader John Thune told reporters on Monday. "My assumption is she's making the best out of a situation that has been hanging around for a long time."
Asked if he has confidence in Bondi amid the Epstein fallout, House Speaker Mike Johnson said: "I do."
Zoom out: Trump is trying to tamp down the tension in his party and has urged his "boys" to stop criticizing her handling of the Epstein files.
"LET PAM BONDI DO HER JOB — SHE'S GREAT!" he said, calling Epstein "somebody that nobody cares about."
Trump isn't prepared to change course over how his administration has handled the Epstein evidence, Axios' Marc Caputo reported Monday.
But his team is considering at least three ways Trump could try to defuse the issue, including appointing a special counsel.
The bottom line: "I have all the confidence in the world in" Bondi, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) told Axios. "I'm with the president on this one."

Trump firing Fed Chair Powell could trigger 'Nixon shock,' warns analyst

Trump firing Fed Chair Powell could trigger 'Nixon shock,' warns analyst originally appeared on TheStreet. Bitcoin passed $120,000 this week, surpassing the market capitalization of Amazon, making Bitcoin's market cap the fifth largest in the world. At the same time, nearly $4 billion has flown into crypto investment products, and altcoins have picked up momentum. But this turn is not just technical. It is becoming even more tied to macro signals with the whispers of where the future of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell may end up. CPI data comes out on Tuesday, and President Trump continues to mention a possible interest rate cut by the Fed, forcing investors to adjust a wild card has surfaced! President Donald Trump may remove Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, a trade that Deutsche Bank strategist George Saravelos states is one of the most underpriced risks in the markets. According to Saravelos, if Jerome Powell is fired, the market could be disrupted within 24 hours. As per WSJ, Saravelos told clients in a note that dismissing Powell could lead to a 3%–4% fall in the dollar and push U.S. Treasury yields up 30–40 bps in a matter of hours. The ramifications would stretch well beyond U.S. borders, he said, noting the threat to swap lines and overall market confidence in U.S. monetary policy. In crypto circles, analysts spoke exclusively to TheStreet Roundtable. They said such a move would further amplify the asset class's core narrative. "Removing the Fed Chair would be a nuclear event for market confidence," said Mike Cahill, CEO of Douro Labs. 'Crypto thrives when people stop believing the old guard has things under control." According to Greg Magadini, Director of Derivatives at Amberdata, Trump's advocacy for lower rates, especially as the U.S. is trying to manage debt costs, could be disastrous if long-term yields rise due to a loss of faith in the independence of the Fed. However, Magadini believes that "It would be a huge boon to Bitcoin, gold, and other hard assets—a disaster for fixed income and the dollar." He compared it to Nixon's decision to go off the gold standard in Richard Nixon's 1971 decision to devalue the dollar and unpeg it from gold caused global financial turmoil and a gold price boom, commonly known as the 'Nixon shock'. As markets prepare for Tuesday's inflation data, Bitcoin's current price is more than just ETF inflows as analysts are betting on a much larger macro dislocation. Whichever way Powell decides to go, markets are already pricing in a change. At press time Bitcoin is trading at $119,803.91, up nearly 1% in the last 24 hours, as per Kraken's price page. Republican lawmakers have blocked a move that could have forced President Donald Trump's administration to release the files on the sex offender Jeffrey Epstein's death and investigation. All but one of the GOP members of the House Rules Committee voted against a Democrat amendment that would have allowed Congress to vote on whether the files should be made public or not. Republicans in the House Rules Committee just stopped an amendment that, if passed, would force Congress to vote on whether the Trump Administration should release the Epstein files. What are they hiding? — Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández (@RepTeresaLF) July 15, 2025 The amendment, introduced by Californian Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna, was voted down 5 to 7 on Monday evening. Khanna posted on X, formerly Twitter, saying: "Rules voted 5-7 to block the full House from voting on my amendment to have a FULL release of the Epstein file. People are fed up. They are fed up. Thanks Rep. Ralph Norman. Need to put the American people before party!" Rules voted 5-7 to block the full House from voting on my amendment to have a FULL release of the Epstein file. People are fed up. They are fed up. Thanks ⁦@RepRalphNorman⁩. Need to put the American people before party! — Ro Khanna (@RoKhanna) July 15, 2025 The Epstein case has remained a lightning rod in American political discourse, fueling conspiracy theories and mistrust in governmental institutions over the past several years. The controversy reignited after the Justice Department's recent memo concluded there was no evidence of a client list or blackmail materials, contradicting previous statements. Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously claimed in a now-deleted post that Trump's name appeared in the Epstein files, and he called on Trump to release the files "as promised." Trump, who has never been accused of wrongdoing in connection with Epstein, has tried to move the conversation away from the issue and there is no evidence that Trump is mentioned in any unreleased files related to the sex offender. Elmo's Account On X Was Hacked Over The Weekend, Called For The Released of Epstein Files & Violence Against Jews

Source: Paul Zimmerman / Getty / Elmo Not even Elmo's account on X is safe from hackers. Hackers took over the official X account for the lovable Sesame Street muppet Elmo on Sunday, and the people behind the hacking posted some pretty wild things on the account. Users on the platform formerly known as Twitter eyebrows raised at the 'expletive-filled antisemitic rants and anti-Trump statements,' CNN reports. The posts, now taken down, were all over X timelines via screenshots, featuring Elmo in his adorable voice calling for the release of the Epstein Files, and violence against Jews. One of the posts read, 'Release the files @realdonaldtrump child f***er.' Sesame Street did confirm the hack, writing in a statement to CNN , 'Elmo's X account was compromised by an unknown hacker who posted disgusting messages, including antisemitic and racist posts,' a spokesperson for Sesame Workshop, the makers of 'Sesame Street,' told CNN in a statement. 'We are working to restore full control of the account.' X & The Trump Administration Is Having A Rough Month The compromising of Elmo's account on X was the latest hiccup for the platform that also said sorry for its AI chatbot, Grok, going full racist, calling itself 'MechaHitler,' adding to the alarming rise of antisemitism in the country. The hacker's post on the files related to the case of Jeffrey Epstein, which has been the talk of the political space after Donald Trump's administration shut down all conspiracy theories related to the case in a memo, which did not sit well with MAGA influencers who were under the impression Trump's Attorney General, Pam Bondi, was going to release the files finally. Instead of quelling any doubt, Trump's DOJ not releasing the list they claim doesn't exist only raised more questions, with many believing Trump is burying it because his name is all over it. Numerous reports claim that Trump's Deputy Director of the FBI, Don Bongino, and FBI Director Kash Patel are at odds with Pam Bondi's handling of the Epstein files, with Bongino reportedly threatening to retire. Welp. There were plenty of reactions to Elmo being the victim of a social media hacking; you can see those reactions in the gallery below.
