Ronaki project: KRG targets 24/7 electricity
Speaking at the Energy Conference in Washington, Barzani presented the 'Ronaki Project' as a key element of the KRG's energy reform strategy. Initially launched in major urban centers, the project is expected to cover all cities by the end of this year, with full regional access targeted by late 2026.
Years of underdeveloped infrastructure have left many households reliant on costly private generators. Barzani noted that Ronaki is designed to ease this dependence by cutting electricity costs by up to 80%, with adjusted rates for high-consumption users.
He also pointed to progress in natural gas development, with two recently signed deals with established US firms positioned to expand output and support wider electricity generation.
'The objective goes beyond Kurdistan,' Barzani added. 'We're working to increase electricity supply for the rest of Iraq and the wider region, where shortages remain widespread.'
The agreements contribute to a broader strategy to transform gas resources into a reliable power source, improving energy security and reducing reliance on diesel generators.
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright, addressing the same conference, described energy as fundamental to economic growth. He stressed that US global energy partnerships focus on cooperation and shared commercial opportunities rather than competition. The latest gas deals, he noted, reflect growing collaboration between American companies and the KRG.
The conference is included in a wider itinerary for PM Barzani, who is leading an official visit to Washington. Earlier today, he met with US Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum, discussing ways to deepen the strategic relationship between the Kurdistan Region and the United States.

Iranian MP Abolfazl Zohrevand: President Pezeshkian's Tucker Carlson Interview Was a 'Catastrophe'; He's Not Worthy of His Office - Why Didn't He Tell Trump He Didn't Have the Right to Attack Iran, to
Iranian MP Abolfazl Zohrevand, who is a member of the Majles National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, criticized President Pezeshkian for his interview with Tucker Carlson in a July 12, 2025 episode of Khate Energy on YouTube. Zohrevand said he felt humiliated by the interview, calling Pezeshkian's positions a 'catastrophe' and declaring him unworthy of the presidency. He criticized Pezeshkian for failing to confront President Trump over his attacks on Iran's nuclear capabilities, his demands for Iranian surrender, and his threats and insults toward Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Zohrevand also denounced Pezeshkian for expressing willingness to negotiate with the U.S. without first demanding an end to American attacks on Iran. He elaborated that Pezeshkian should have read the Iranian constitution, adding: 'I don't know how, despite his oath to defend the constitution and the ideals of the Revolution, he gave such an interview.'

Al-Sadr's demands challenge the Coordination Framework
Shafaq News – Baghdad Muqtada al-Sadr's latest proposal was a key focus of the Coordination Framework's recent meeting, where the Shiite political alliance reviewed developments in Iraq's electoral landscape and discussed the implications of al-Sadr's conditions. A source familiar with the meeting told Shafaq News that the discussions focused on the implications of al-Sadr's conditions, which include sweeping reform measures that directly challenge the policies of several Framework factions—most notably, the call to place all weapons under state control and to restructure the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) under a new legal and security framework. 'Some leaders within the Framework believe they have observed early signs of a quiet convergence between al-Sadr's agenda and the stance of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani on key issues,' the source revealed, adding that those leaders reportedly fear that al-Sadr may offer indirect support to al-Sudani in the upcoming elections. The Framework also emphasized the need to counter any shift in Shiite voter sentiment that could threaten its current dominance in parliament. Muqtada al-Sadr recently declared his disavowal of dozens of political and military figures linked to his movement for deciding to contest the upcoming elections—scheduled for November 11, 2025—in defiance of his formal call to boycott the vote.
