Zayn Malik Opens Up About Racism on Upcoming 'Fuchsia Sea' Remix

Cosmopolitan15 hours ago
Zayn Malik is back with another banger, and he's seemingly opening up about his One Direction-era fame in its lyrics. The singer-songwriter is dropping a remix of his Room Under the Stairs track, 'Fuchsia Sea,' featuring a new rap verse.
He teased the new lyrics on his Instagram Stories, where he discusses his journey with finding fame at a young age and facing racism from the public while he was 'in a white band' with Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, and Liam Payne.
'Got my back against the wall so much they think I got a brick fascination / Do you remember every conversation? 'Cause I have been conscious of every connotation,' he muses on the snippet he shared on social media.
He continued, 'And while they concentrate on their elevation, I've got a round trip to the constellation / I'm a convert to the concert, and I did that for inflation, 'cause I worked hard in a white band, and they still laughed at the Asian.'
The track, which was first featured on his 2024 album Room Under the Stairs, outlined his resilience following personal struggles. His new lyrics seem to be an extension of the emotions that drove the original version.
This marks Zayn's first musical release since he toured his album earlier this year. On the tour's opening night in Mexico City, he sang 1D's ballad 'Night Changes' as a tribute to the late Liam Payne. It also happened to be the 10th anniversary of Zayn's departure from the band.
'It's the first time I've sung that song in 10 years. Thank you, that was fucking amazing. I almost cried,' he said following the emotional performance, per fan-captured footage.
In 2015, the singer exited 1D to pursue some 'private time out of the spotlight'—but he ended up releasing his debut solo album, Mind of Mine, later that year.
'My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. I'd like to apologise to the fans if I've let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart,' he wrote in a statement on the band's Facebook page at the time.
He added, 'I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight. I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry, and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world.'

Cierra Ortega exits ‘Love Island USA' villa following backlash over resurfaced racial slur posts

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Cierra Ortega, a contestant of this summer's 'Love Island USA' left the villa just a week before the finale of the hit reality series is set to air on Peacock. Her departure, announced Sunday, followed weeks of uproar from viewers after old posts from Ortega resurfaced that contained a racial slur against Asian people. The show's narrator, Iain Stirling, announced Ortega had departed 'due to a personal situation' early in Sunday's episode. Ortega becomes the second contestant this season to depart the show amid controversy due to past social media posts. Yulissa Escobar abruptly exited last month in the second episode after clips of her using racist language resurfaced online. Her departure was also not explained in the show. A spokesperson for the show declined to comment Monday. Ortega's family posted to her Instagram story Sunday evening following the announcement of her departure, asking the public 'for compassion. For patience. For basic human decency. 'While Cierra is not in the villa anymore, she is still away. She hasn't had the chance to process any of this or speak for herself,' her family wrote. 'But we know our daughter. We know her heart. And when she returns, we believe she'll face this with honesty, growth, and grace.' Her family said they, along with Ortega's friends and online supporters, have received threats, attacks and cruel messages on social media, noting that 'no one deserve that kind of hate, no matter what mistakes they've made.' 'Love Island USA' is an American spin-off of the original U.K. series and is airing its seventh season . The show airs daily except Wednesdays and brings young singles together in a remote villa in Fiji to explore connections with the ultimate goal of finding love. Couples undergo challenges and are encouraged test their romantic connections as new contestants are introduced. Islanders are routinely 'dumped' from the villa throughout the series as stronger couples form. The winning couple receives $100,000. The show, which strips contestants of their phones or access to the outside world, has previously asked fans to avoid cyberbullying contestants. Host Ariana Madix called for fans to stop doxxing and harassing the show's stars in a recent interview with The Associated Press. Ortega entered the villa at the end of the first episode as a bombshell, one of the first in a steady stream of new contestants who come in after the show began, often expected to disrupt existing couples and create new relationship dynamics. Ortega quickly coupled up with Nic Vansteenberghe, whom she remained with up until her departure. Her exit broke up one of the few consistent couples of the season. The couple had just announced a few episodes prior they were 'closed off,' a popular 'Love Island' phrase to indicate neither contestant was interested in exploring a connection with any other islander. 'Before Cierra had left, my mind was clear. I knew what the future would look like, and now, I'm lost,' Vansteenberghe said during Sunday's episode. Vansteenberghe stayed on the show as a single islander after Ortega left, and he ultimately re-coupled with fellow contestant Olandria Carthen before the end of the episode. Belle-A Walker, a contestant who was dumped earlier this season, took to Instagram to express heartbreak over Ortega's resurfaced posts. Walker, who is Asian American, said she is 'deeply appreciative' of the show's producers 'for taking a stand and making it clear that racism of any kind is not tolerated.' 'Asian hate is oftentimes overlooked and dismissed. But being a first-generation American, I have personally witnessed and experienced how real and hurtful comments like these are,' Walker wrote on her Instagram story page. 'It is my hope that this situation can help shed light on how big of an issue anti-Asian hate really is.' Error! Sorry, there was an error processing your request. 'Love Island USA' star Cierra Ortega's parents speak out after backlash amid racism allegations

The parents of "Love Island USA" star Cierra Ortega are addressing their daughter's sudden exit from the popular reality show. During Sunday night's episode of the hit Peacock reality show, fans learned of Ortega's departure from narrator Iain Stirling, who revealed that Ortega "left the villa due to a personal situation." The shocking exit came amid backlash over resurfaced past posts on a social media account belonging to Ortega that allegedly used a derogatory term against the Asian community, which led fans to call for her removal from the show. As fans learned of Ortega's departure, her parents shared a statement on her Instagram story on behalf of their family, asking for "compassion" and "patience." "As Cierra's parents, this has been one of the most painful weeks of our lives," they wrote. "We've seen the posts, the headlines, the hurt and the hate. And while Cierra hasn't seen any of it yet, we have. And so have the people who love her." "We're not here to justify or ignore what's surfaced," their statement continued. "We understand why people are upset, and we know accountability matters. But what's happening online right now has gone far beyond that. The threats. The cruel messages. The attacks on her family, her friends, even her supporters, it's heartbreaking. It's uncalled for. And no one deserves that kind of hate, no matter what mistake they've made." They went on, "While Cierra is not in the villa anymore, she is still away. She hasn't had the chance to process any of this or speak for herself. But we know our daughter. We know her heart. And when she returns, we believe she'll face this with honesty, growth, and grace." "While she'll always be our little girl, she's also a woman, one who will take responsibility in her own time and her own voice," they added. "Until then, we're simply asking for compassion. For patience. For basic human decency. Not just for her, but for everyone caught in the middle of this. Thank you to those who've continued to show love, even when it's not easy." They signed the message, "With love, Her family." Ortega has not released a statement of her own since Sunday night's episode. The controversy stems from alleged Instagram posts tied to Ortega from 2015 and 2023, which appeared to have included an anti-Asian slur. The alleged resurfaced posts have sparked backlash on social media, as well as a petition that has garnered more than 17,000 signatures. Ortega's departure shocked her fellow cast members during Sunday's episode, including Nic Vansteenberghe, the cast member with whom Ortega had coupled up on the show and with whom she recently became "closed off," which meant the two had mutually agreed to stop getting to know other people in the villa. Vansteenberghe re-coupled with Ortega's friend, Olandria Carthen, at the end of Sunday night's episode. "Love Island USA" contestant Bella-A Walker, whose journey on the show ended earlier this season after Vasteenberghe chose Ortega over her, reacted to the past alleged social media comments on Sunday, condemning racism of any kind in an Instagram story post. "As a proud Asian American woman, I'm deeply appreciative of the Love Island USA producers for taking a stand and making it clear that racism of any kind is not tolerated," she wrote. Walker, who has previously opened up about her Filipino American heritage, said, "Asian hate is oftentimes overlooked and dismissed. But being a first-generation American, I have personally witnessed and experienced how real and hurtful comments like these are. It is my hope that this situation can help shed light on how big of an issue anti-Asian hate actually is." "Just like so many other Asian Americans, my mom immigrated here to create a better life for her and her future family," she added. "Knowing the hardships she and so many others have faced, I could not be silent any longer. Because what good is this amazing platform God and you all have given me if I don't use it to amplify the voices of my community?" She ended her message by writing, "I do not condone bigotry or racism of any kind. But I also don't condone hate either. Please think twice before leaving unkind comments to or about this person. I love you all so much ♥️." Ortega is not the first "Love Island USA" contestant this season to make an abrupt exit from the show. Following the season 7 premiere, cast member Yulissa Escobar was quietly removed from the show in the second episode following her use of racial slurs, including the N-word. A video had resurfaced of Escobar using the word on a podcast. Escobar apologized for what she said in a TikTok video at the time and also shared a statement on Instagram. "To those who are disappointed or offended, I understand and I apologize," she wrote in part. "I am sorry."

How Cierra's Family Reacted to Her Sudden 'Love Island USA' Exit

THE RUNDOWN Cierra has left the villa. In Sunday night's episode of Love Island USA, contestant Cierra Ortega unceremoniously left the series 'due to a personal situation.' Her exit was not shown on camera, but instead was announced by narrator Ian Stirling mid-episode, with the rest of her co-stars shown reacting to her absence the next day. While Peacock has not outright explained the reason for her departure, it comes after past posts surfaced online in which Ortega allegedly used an Asian slur. According to People, Ortega used the slur to describe her appearance in a January 2015 post, and again in February 2023 after getting Botox. The language drew widespread outcry from Love Island viewers, with many calling for her to be removed from the series. With Ortega now out of the picture, that leaves her partner, costar Nic Vansteenberghe, single in the villa. Given the two were one of the strongest couples of the season, this is a major shake-up with only about a week left before the July 13 finale. But fans have high hopes for whom he should couple-up with next. Here's what we know about Ortega's exit and how it affects the show. She has not personally responded to the news, but her parents posted a statement on her Instagram Story following Sunday night's episode, writing that this has been 'one of the most painful weeks of our lives.' They clarified that while Ortega herself had not yet seen the public reactions at the time of writing, her family and friends have seen the headlines regarding her controversial posts, as well as 'the hurt and the hate.' 'We're not here to justify or ignore what's surfaced,' they continued. 'We understand why people are upset, and we know accountability matters. But what's happening online right now has gone far beyond that. The threats. The cruel messages. The attacks on her family, her friends, even her supporters, it's heartbreaking. It's uncalled for. And no one deserves that kind of hate, no matter what mistake they've made. 'While Cierra is not in the villa anymore, she is still away. She hasn't had the chance to process any of this or speak for herself. But we know our daughter. We know her heart. And when she returns, we believe she'll face this with honesty, growth, and grace. 'While she'll always be our little girl, she's also a woman, one who will take responsibility in her own time and her own voice. 'Until then, we're simply asking for compassion. For patience. For basic human decency. Not just for her, but for everyone caught in the middle of this.' Read their full statement below. Ortega's friend MJ Hedderman, who handled her social media account while she was filming, also took a break from posting after the controversy arose. 'I want to be clear that I do not condone racism, bigotry or hate in any way shape or form, nor was I aware of the recent screenshots until they were posted,' Hedderman wrote on her own Instagram Story, according to Us Weekly. 'I discovered it at the same time as all of you did.' She added, 'I cannot speak for anybody or make any statements besides my own, and decided to take a step back from running her account. I was asked by her family to turn off comments and refrain from speaking on her behalf. This situation has been really difficult, and I'm still processing everything.' The reactions are mixed, with some celebrating the producers' decision to remove Ortega from the show and others believing they went too far. Former season 7 contestant Belle-A Walker, who is of Asian descent, also shared a statement on the controversy, per People. She denounced usage of the slur, but also asked for fans to show Ortega kindness. 'I do not condone bigotry or racism of any kind. But I also don't condone hate either,' Walker wrote. 'Please think twice before leaving unkind comments to or about this person. I love you all so much.' Some fans are also rooting for Nic to move on with co-star Olandria, whom he was coupled up with earlier in the season but they decided to leave things as friends. In Sunday night's episode, 'Nicolandria' shippers got what they wanted when the two ended up together following the latest recoupling ceremony. A similar move happened earlier this season with contestant Yulissa Escobar, after past footage of her using the N-word surfaced and disturbed fans. She also exited off-screen in episode 2, with Stirling mentioning in his narration that she had left the villa. Escobar later expressed remorse in an Instagram statement on June 6: 'To those who are disappointed or offended, I understand and I apologize. I am sorry,' she wrote. As for whether Ortega will make a similar statement or address the controversy in-person during the reunion, we'll have to wait and see.
