US pauses some munitions shipments to Ukraine, including air defense missiles, senior White House official says

Yahooa day ago
The Trump administration is pausing some weapons shipments to Ukraine, including air defense missiles, following a review of military spending and American support to foreign countries, a senior White House official told CNN.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth signed off on the review, which the official noted had been underway for months. It was not immediately clear if military support provided to other countries would be affected.
White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly said the decision was made 'to put America's interests first.'
Russia welcomed the decision, claiming – without providing any evidence – it was made because the US did not have enough weapons.
'As far as we understand the reason for this decision was empty warehouses, lack of these weapons in warehouses. But in any case, the fewer weapons are supplied to Ukraine, the closer the end of the special military operation,' Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters in a phone call, using the Kremlin moniker for Russia's unprovoked war on Ukraine.
The decision to halt some weapons transfers to Ukraine comes after President Volodymyr Zelensky pleaded with Western allies to bolster its aerial defenses after intensifying Russian airborne attacks.
Russia has in recent weeks launched near-nightly air attacks on Ukraine, involving hundreds of drones and missiles. On Sunday, the Ukrainian military said a pilot was killed after his F-16 fighter jet crashed during a Russian aerial assault.
Following the attack, Zelensky said on social media Ukraine is ready to buy 'American systems' to strengthen its air defenses.
Ukraine's defense ministry said Wednesday that it 'has not received any official notifications about the suspension or revision of the delivery schedules for the agreed defence assistance.'
But officials in Kyiv stressed on Wednesday that US weapons played a critical part in the country's defense.
'It would seem very strange, it would seem inhumane to stop supplying missiles … especially to Patriot systems, which are clearly protecting the civilian population in Ukraine on a large scale,' Mykhailo Podolyak, Ukraine's presidential office advisor, said.
The US has been the biggest single donor of military aid to Ukraine since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022, supplying Ukraine with air defense systems, drones, rocket launchers, radars, tanks and anti-armor weapons, leading to concerns over dwindling US stockpiles.
But the balance of aid to Ukraine has changed significantly since Trump returned to power, casting doubt over the future of US support for Kyiv.
In April, Europe surpassed the US in total military aid to Ukraine for the first time, with its contribution equaling 72 billion Euros ($84.9 billion), compared with the US's 65 billion Euros ($76.6 billion), according to data from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, a German think tank that closely tracks wartime aid to Ukraine.
The shift came after Trump halted all shipments of military aid to Ukraine following a heated Oval Office argument with Zelensky in March. Trump resumed aid flows to Ukraine about a week later.
Last week, during the NATO summit in The Hague, US President Donald Trump suggested Kyiv may see future Patriot missile system deliveries from the US – signaling a possible shift in his thinking about US aid flows to Kyiv.
The Patriots are widely considered among the best air defense systems, particularly in protecting against advanced hypersonic and ballistic missiles.
Ukraine is known to have roughly half a dozen of the US-made Patriot air defense systems, which play a crucial role in its air defense, protecting millions of civilians from Russian missiles.
But Kyiv is at risk of running out of missiles for these systems.

‘We Live in a Surveillance State': Reddit Users Explode Over Reports of ICE's New Face and Fingerprint Scanning App

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is reportedly using a new tool called Mobile Fortify, a smartphone-based facial recognition and fingerprint scanning app that allows agents to identify people in real time using only a phone camera. The tool taps into the same biometric system used by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at ports of entry. But ICE is now using it inside the U.S., in field operations across the country. According to internal ICE emails reviewed by 404 Media, the app is being deployed by Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), the branch of ICE tasked with arresting and deporting undocumented immigrants. The app, reportedly called 'Mobile Fortify,' gives federal agents the power to use their phones to identify people in the field via facial recognition, a development that many online see as a horrifying leap forward for the surveillance state. The 404 Media report has ignited outrage on Reddit, where users are voicing deep concern about how far this technology could go and what it says about the direction of American governance. 'Surveillance state in full effect,' one user posted bluntly. 'The next step is to label anyone who opposes them a terrorist or criminal, strip you of any rights and probably use unconstitutional surveillance to find any dirt on you,' warned another. Others drew a straight line between mass surveillance and the erosion of civil liberties. 'We live in a surveillance state and anyone who believes otherwise reads too much Fox News,' said one user. 'Everyone mask up like it's COVID! We have already witnessed an attempted arrest and then release,' another user added. Some users offered practical resistance strategies—or at least suggestions for anonymity. 'I wonder if facial ID blocking glasses, like Reflectacles, would work on this. Apparently they block iPhone facial recognition,' said one commenter. 'Definitely wear a mask (preferably ones that hide your whole head, i.e. UV Blocking Balaclava), wear sunglasses and bring an umbrella. Also bring a flashlight, headlamp, flashlight with strobing capabilities,' wrote another. A few users expressed bitter disillusionment with the political divide over surveillance. 'Mass surveillance was something right-wingers always said they would fight against. Now that it's happening they aren't doing shit,' one user said. 'They are doing shit… they are doing the mass surveillance,' another replied, 'which is entirely made of shit.' 'They always figured that when authoritarianism came to the U.S., it would be left-wing. But since it's right-wing, they are fine with it,' added another. The most chilling posts reflected the loss of faith in institutional leadership altogether. 'Creepy. I remember noticing this at the airport a few years ago and how it felt Orwellian. I was right.' 'Wondering how long into the police state our remaining leaders will allow the country to slip before everything burns down,' wrote one user. 'We have been wholly betrayed by everyone who vowed to serve the public besides educators and emergency service workers. I have learned nothing this year that leads me to believe anyone of means gives enough fucks to stop any of this.' The growing backlash taps into long-standing fears that technologies built for border enforcement or national security are now being turned inward, aimed not just at suspects but potentially at anyone. Civil liberties groups have warned for years that biometric surveillance tools, especially those powered by AI and facial recognition, lack proper oversight and accountability and risk targeting marginalized communities. Gizmodo has reached out to ICE for comment on whether Mobile Fortify is currently in use and how the agency justifies deploying such tools in domestic operations. So far, no comment. For now, Reddit is sounding the alarm.

Donald Trump Floats Possibly Deporting Elon Musk Following His Ongoing Criticism of The 'Big, Beautiful Bill'

Source: The Washington Post / Getty / Donald Trump / Elon Musk If you need any more proof that the MAGA bromance between Donald Trump and Elon Musk is truly over, the traitor-in-chief's latest comments are a great indication of just that. When Elon Musk got onboard the MAGA train and fueled it with his unlimited amount of cash, we are sure he didn't think his name would come up in discussions of possibly being deported. Well, that's what happened on Tuesday when Agent Orange floated the idea of deporting the South African-born billionaire, following Musk's ongoing criticism of his disastrous tax spending bill, also known as the 'big, beautiful bill.' Even after walking back claims he made on X, formerly Twitter, that Trump was on Epstein's list, and that he should be impeached, Musk continued to rail on the bill as Republicans continue to push it along, even threatening to put his money behind candidates to unseat the Republicans who voted for the bill. Reporters asked Trump if he would consider deporting Musk, and he said, 'I don't know. We'll have to take a look.' Trump went as far as to suggest even using DOGE, the made-up government agency once led by Musk, to look into eliminating the government subsidies that Phony Stark's companies benefit from. 'We might have to put DOGE on Elon,' Trump said. 'You know what DOGE is? DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon. Wouldn't that be terrible? He gets a lot of subsidies.' Of course, Musk didn't sit on his X fingers writing, 'So tempting to escalate this. So, so tempting. But I will refrain for now.' The two weren't done taking shots at each other on social media, with Trump taking things further on his lame platform, Truth Social. 'Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far, and without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa,' Trump said. 'No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production, and our Country would save a FORTUNE. Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard, look at this? BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED!!!' Meanwhile, Musk continues to threaten to start a third political party. You can see what folks are saying about this latest development in the Trump/Musk saga in the gallery below. Report: Commanders' Plan B could involve going to President Trump, Congress

The federal government could be moving from the big, beautiful bill to a sweet, swanky stadium. The tail end of a report from Fox 5 in D.C. regarding the recent dinner hosted by the Commanders for members of the D.C. Council adds an important nugget regarding the potential fallback option for the Commanders, if the D.C. Council doesn't move quickly enough to allow the stadium to be opened by 2030. Per the report, D.C. Council chairperson Phil Mendelson confirmed that he has heard talk of a Plan B that may involve the Commanders going to President Trump and members of Congress to make it happen on time. So what would the Commanders expect the President to do? Pressure the D.C. Council with mean tweets? Come up with the cash that the D.C. Council is reluctant to invest for the project? The mere mention of trying to use the federal government to get the stadium bill helps explain the decision for Commanders owner Josh Harris and Commissioner Roger Goodell to participate in an Oval Office dog-and-pony show regarding the holding of the 2027 NFL draft on the National Mall in D.C. Of course, Republicans are supposed to be against excessive government spending. Which would, in theory, prompt Trump and those aligned with him to bristle at the idea of a pork-barrel project for the Hogs. But the party has changed under the current and former chief executive. Political ideology has been replaced with adhering to whatever the President and those whispering in his ear want. That's not a political comment. It's a comment about our current political reality. And it provides an opening for a multibillionaire like Harris to spin the wheel on the possibility of getting the President to support using hundreds of millions in taxpayer money to get the stadium built on the team's preferred timetable. Even if it means naming the stadium after him.
