Soccer-Inter jerseys fly off shelves in Marseille before PSG's Champions League final

The Star26-05-2025
PARIS (Reuters) -In Marseille, the only French city with a European Cup to its name, an unexpected fashion trend has emerged - Inter Milan jerseys are flying off the shelves as Olympique de Marseille supporters back the Italian side against their bitter rivals Paris St Germain in Saturday's Champions League final.
Inter shirts have been selling fast in the port city, which celebrated OM's Champions League triumph in 1993.
"It's crazy, everyone wants the Inter jersey. All year long, there's no demand, nobody wants this jersey. And now, it's like the whole city of Marseille has turned Interista. We're really going to pray for Inter to win," Ismael, a vendor at a major sports shop in Marseille, told French TV channel BFM.
The son of former OM president Bernard Tapie, who led the club to the 1993 title, said he would support Inter as well.
"A true OM supporter can't be happy if PSG wins the Champions League. For France, it would be good for PSG to win it. But me, I'm supporting Inter Milan. Ask any real OM fan — we're all fully behind Inter," Laurent Tapie was quoted as saying by French media.
In 2020, OM fans celebrated at the Old Port when PSG lost to Bayern Munich in the Champions League final.
French clubs have played in seven European Cup finals, losing six of them between Stade de Reims (2), PSG, St Etienne, Monaco and Marseille.

Shi beats Lanier to win Japan Open badminton title

TOKYO: China's former badminton world No. 1 Shi Yuqi won the Japan Open title today, beating French defending champion Alex Lanier 21-17, 21-15 in the final. South Korea's An Se Young downed China's Wang Zhiyi 21-12, 21-10 in the women's final to capture an incredible sixth title in seven tournaments so far this year. Shi was replaced at the top of the men's world rankings by Thailand's Kunlavut Vitidsarn in June, but he was too good for rising star Lanier in Tokyo. The Chinese player came out on top after a close first game and wore his 20-year-old opponent down to close out the match in 50 minutes. "I wanted to take it at my own pace, and even if I was losing I knew it was important to dig in," said current world No. 3 Shi, who won his third title of the year. "My opponent is young and he has a lot of physical strength, so I knew I had to stick to my own style." Lanier won his first major senior title in Tokyo last year and he followed it up with victory at the European Championships in April. He will attempt to win the world title in front of his home fans in Paris next month, but he admitted he felt pressure in Tokyo as the defending champion. "I don't think that it is affecting me mentally, but physically you play with a bit more pressure," he said. "The movements are a bit less relaxed and there are some distractions in the timing, in the footwork." World women's No. 1 Se Young extended her remarkable run of form with a dominating win over second-seeded Wang. Se Young's only defeat this year came in the quarter-finals of the Singapore Open last month. "I always have areas that need to be improved on so I work on those in training," said the 23-year-old Se Young, who won gold at last year's Paris Olympics. "I challenge myself and that's what leads to these results – I put in extra effort on the things that need improving." China's Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin took the mixed doubles title, beating Thailand's Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Suprissara Paewsampran 21-19, 16-21, 21-15 in the final. China also came out on top in women's doubles, with the top-seeded pair of Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning beating Malaysia's Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan 21-15, 21-14.

Soccer-Scugnizzo Cup sparks football passion in Naples prison walls

NAPLES, Italy (Reuters) -In the vibrant heart of Naples' historic centre, the thunderous sounds from five-a-side football matches resonate off the ancient stone walls of a former juvenile prison. Fuelled by Napoli winning the Italian Serie A title in two of the last three seasons, a passion for soccer is taking root across the city. More than 30 years had passed since the club's first two Scudetto crowns inspired by Argentina World Cup winner and Napoli icon Diego Maradona. The long-awaited success has reignited a deep passion for the sport and the fierce devotion Neapolitans are renowned for. Nowhere is this clearer than in the games in the former prison courtyard, abandoned for over two decades, which are drawing growing crowds and sponsorship. The Scugnizzo Cup, a grassroots tournament in its sixth year, is becoming one of the city's most popular sporting events. "It's a game this city loves deeply, almost viscerally, but one that is often tied solely to the passion for the city's professional club," volunteer Sergio Sciambra said. "At the same time Naples lacks sports facilities and parks, and it has become nearly impossible to play football in public squares taken over by cafes and tourism," The prison, known as Scugnizzo Liberato, which translates to liberated street boy in the Neapolitan dialect, has been transformed into a vibrant community space. "It's a tournament created for the people of the neighbourhoods, to build atmosphere and friendship," said organiser Giuseppe Pipino. "Naples is sometimes criticised for not being a good example, but the Scugnizzo Cup is for those kids who face more difficulties." The tournament brings neighbourhood and migrant teams together to play matches in a tight concrete courtyard. "The Scugnizzo Cup is the testament to a need felt by the city, to reclaim a sport that can no longer be just watched from the stands," volunteer Julian Foster said. "It shows us that you can still have fun without massive stadiums and football superstar, that there are other ways of being together, ways that have slowly been taken away or forgotten." During this year's final, the prison courtyard was up by with flares as Manchester City Napoli, named in playful tribute to their Premier League counterparts, crushed Inter Miami Quartieri Uniti 4-0 on Friday. Soccer-Man Utd lack pace, says coach Amorim after pre-season draw with Leeds

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Friendly - Hong Kong v Manchester United - Hong Kong Stadium, Hong Kong, China - May 30, 2025 Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim REUTERS/Tyrone Siu/File Photo (Reuters) -Manchester United have plenty to improve on and need more pace in their midfield, manager Ruben Amorim said after the Premier League side began their pre-season preparations with a goalless draw against Leeds United. United had their worst-ever Premier League campaign in the 2024-25 season, finishing 15th in the standings, and also failed to qualify for the Champions League as they lost the Europa League final 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur. The Old Trafford side failed to impress in the draw with newly promoted Leeds in Stockholm on Saturday, despite the inclusion of new signing Matheus Cunha in the starting lineup. "We suffered a little bit when we tried to press high, they kick the ball, win the second ball and they were a danger in that moment," Amorim told MUTV. "We have a lack of pace, especially in the middle of the park, and you can feel it, (so) that's hard to bring the ball (forward). But we created chances. We have a lot to do but it was a first test against a Premier League team, with two different teams, so it was a good test... "As a group, we have a lot to improve, the speed of the game, all the details, so, yeah, we are going to improve." United next play West Ham United at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 26.
