Independent11 hours ago
Donald Trump has suggested hosting Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) matches at the White House on Thursday (3 July),
Speaking at an event in Iowa ahead of the 250th anniversary of America's independence on Friday (4 July), the US president said he's considering inviting upwards of 20,000 spectators to view the fights as part of celebrations to commemorate the historic milestone.
'So every one of our national parks, battlefields and historic sites are going to have special events in honor of America 250. And I even think we're going to have a UFC fight,' Mr Trump said.
″Think of this on the grounds of the White House. We have a lot of land there,' he said,
Press secretary Karoline Leavitt later said that Mr Trump was being 'dead serious' about his plans.

Report: UFC confirms plans for event at White House in 2026

July 4 - UFC plans to take its show to the White House when the United States puts on its 250th birthday celebration in 2026. The UFC confirmed to The Athletic on Friday that plans are underway to host a slate of fights on the White House grounds in Washington D.C., next year, with an expected summer date not specified. The confirmation comes a day after President Donald Trump shared those intentions to an Iowa crowd. "We're going to have a UFC fight, think of this, on the grounds of the White House," Trump said. "We have a lot of land there. ... We're going to have a UFC fight, championship fight, full fight." A friend of UFC president Dana White, Trump has regularly attended fights over the years, including taking in UFC 309 just days after being elected in November. He also attended fights in April and June. After Trump made his comments to Iowa supporters, White reposted a video of the president's remarks on Instagram. He added the caption: "This will be EPIC!!" No further details about the 2026 fights, including how far along plans have become, were shared. Should it come to fruition, it would become the first professional sporting event ever contested on White House grounds. --Field Level Media

Trump has ‘good conversation' with Zelenskyy after heavy bombardment of Ukraine by Russia

Donald Trump spoke with Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, on Friday as the US president appears increasingly disheartened over his chances of fulfilling a campaign pledge to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. The call with Zelenskyy comes as Washington has halted its latest shipment of military aid to Ukraine including Patriot air defense missiles and other crucial munitions meant to support the country's defenses, and hours after Russia launched a devastating air attack on Kyiv using a record number of drones and ballistic missiles. Zelenskyy called the conversation 'important and useful' and said in a post said that he and Trump had discussed Ukraine's air defense capabilities, joint defense production and 'mutual purchases and investments', all potentially avenues for Ukraine to restart aid from the United States by providing incentives for the Trump administration to rush crucial munitions to Kyiv. He said that the two sides had also agreed to 'increase aerial protection', a particular focus for Kyiv as Russia has increased bombardments of Ukrainian cities despite outrage from Trump and other world leaders. Yet it was not immediately clear if Zelenskyy had achieved any concrete progress with Trump and in his statement he did not mention the halt of aid shipments from the US or announce their resumption. Axios reported that a source described the call as a 'good conversation'. Trump said he was 'very disappointed' after a telephone call with Vladimir Putin on Thursday. A Putin aide told reporters that the Russian president was not willing to make concessions on what the Kremlin has called the 'root causes' of the war with Ukraine, a list of grievances that includes Nato expansion and Ukraine's desire to join western economic and security blocs. 'I'm very disappointed with the conversation I had today with President Putin, because I don't think he's there,' Trump told reporters after holding a rally in Iowa on Thursday evening. 'I don't think he's there, and I'm very disappointed. I'm just saying, I don't think he's looking to stop, and that's too bad.' The US has said that it halted the shipments, some of which were already in Poland, due to a review of US military stockpiles that suggested that the country is running low on munitions for its own troops. Germany has said that it is in 'intensive talks' to buy the Patriot missiles for Ukraine, although it's unclear whether those stocks would be available immediately. 'There are various ways to fill this Patriot gap,' a German government spokesperson told a news conference in Berlin on Friday. One option being considered was for the German government to buy the Patriot missile batteries in the United States and then send them to Ukraine. The shortage of Patriot missiles was further highlighted by the record bombardment of Ukraine in which Russia sent more than 550 drones and ballistic missiles at major cities in what Zelenskyy described as a 'deliberate act of terror'. The strike immediately followed the call between Putin and Trump, Zelenskyy said, and was a 'clear interpretation of how Moscow interprets diplomacy'.

First 'Alligator Alcatraz' inmates arrive at new detention facility...amid warnings the predator-filled area is on verge of flood

President Trump's new 'Alligator Alcatraz' migrant detention facility has admitted its first detainees, amid warnings of flooding in the area where it was built. Footage taken by NBC Miami on Thursday shows what appear to be two handcuffed detainees being escorted into the facility, located deep in the Florida Everglades. The Florida Division of Emergency Management and the office of Republican state Attorney General James Uthmeier confirmed the first group of migrants arrived at the center this week. 'Next stop: back to where they came from,' read an X post by Florida attorney general James Uthmeier, who has been credited as the architect behind the center. The detainees arrived at the facility just as concerns grew over flooding caused by thunderstorms. The facility is located at a place prone to frequent heavy rains, which caused some flooding in the tents Tuesday during a visit by President Donald Trump to mark its opening. State officials say the complex can withstand a Category 2 hurricane, which packs winds of between 96 and 110 mph, and that contractors worked overnight to shore up areas where flooding occurred. DeSantis and other state officials say locating the facility in the rugged and remote Florida Everglades is meant as a deterrent. The Everglades is home to millions of alligators, meaning any migrants who escape will likely find themselves vulnerable to the apex predators. DeSantis named the facility after the notorious federal prison built on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco, which was considered inescapable thanks to its position surrounded by the icy and shark-filled waters of San Francisco Bay. According to images shared with the AP, overnight Wednesday, workers put up new signs labeled 'Alligator Alcatraz' along the sole highway leading to the site and outside the entrance of the airfield that has been known as the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport. State officials seized the county-owned land where the facility is located using emergency powers authorized by an executive order issued by the governor. The facility, at an airport used for training, will have an initial capacity of about 3,000 detainees, according to governor Ron DeSantis said. It will apparently be staffed by about 1,000 people. The center was built in eight days and features more than 200 security cameras, 28,000-plus feet of barbed wire and 400 security personnel. DeSantis and other state officials say locating the facility in the rugged and remote Florida Everglades is meant as a deterrent Immigrants who are arrested by Florida law enforcement officers under the federal government's 287(g) program will be taken to the facility, according to an official in President Donald Trump's administration. The program is led by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and allows police officers to interrogate immigrants in their custody and detain them for potential deportation. The facility is expected to be expanded in 500 bed increments until it has an estimated 5,000 beds by early July. A group of Florida Democratic state lawmakers headed to the facility Thursday to conduct 'an official legislative site visit,' citing concerns about conditions for detainees and the awarding of millions of dollars in state contracts for the construction.
