Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin is proposing to cap flight ticket prices for Sabah voters flying home for the upcoming state election.
Chan said he would propose to Transport Minister Anthony Loke for the price to be capped at RM599.
'This will ease the financial burden of Sabah folks working in the Klang Valley, who want to return home and fulfil their duty to vote,' he said.
Chan, who is Kota Kinabalu MP, said the Madani government's commitment to Sabah and Sarawak was reflected in its policies.
'Special grants to Sabah and Sarawak have increased to RM600mil.
'Full regulatory authority over power supply and renewable energy has been returned to both state governments, while the Bintulu Port has been handed back to Sarawak,' he said, speaking after launching the Gawai and Kaamatan celebration at the Borneo Cultural Market in Seri Kembangan, Selangor.
Chan added he would allocate RM10,000 for the 10th Gawai and Kaamatan celebration at Pasar Budaya Borneo next year.
This year's celebration saw cultural performances, a variety of food from Sabah and Sarawak, activities such as batik painting, folk games, karaoke competition and a lucky draw.
Organised by Pasar Budaya Borneo Seri Kembangan Association in collaboration with National Unity Ministry, the event received strong support from the local community.
Wilma Osingku, from Kudat in Sabah, has been a vendor at the market since 2017.
The 39-year-old Iban said she was proud to see the cultures of Borneo featured in peninsular Malaysia.
'We get to taste the food from home, which is different from the food here,' she said.
Meanwhile, Puchong MP Yeo Bee Yin announced a contribution of RM30,000.
'Part of the allocation will go towards installing a prominent signboard for Borneo Cultural Market.
'Three main focus areas for the market development are improving basic facilities, ensuring continuous cultural activities and creating an interactive visitor experience.
'We will work closely with local authorities to address basic facility issues such as toilets and access to clean water for the comfort of visitors and traders,' she said.
Yeo expressed her hope for the event to be held annually as a part of the Puchong parliamentary events calendar, as Borneo Cultural Market has great potential to become a cultural destination of international standing.
'Pasar Budaya Borneo should serve as a space that brings people together, a place that feels like home away from home for Sabahans and Sarawakians living in peninsular Malaysia.
'We fully support the community's efforts to establish it as a proud cultural landmark just like Sigar in Penampang or the cat statue in Kuching.'
Also present were Seri Kembangan assemblyman Wong Siew Ki, Seri Serdang assemblyman Abbas Salimmi Che Adzmi@Azmi, Borneo Cultural Market chairman Nelson Entap, programme director Nilisip Juin and representatives from Rumah Sarawak and Rumah Sabah.

South Korea says it has no written pact on US trade deal

KIA Motors' vehicles are parked to be exported, at a port in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, July 31, 2025. REUTERS/Kim Hong-Ji SEOUL (Reuters) - There is no written agreement yet on a trade deal between South Korea and the United States announced by President Donald Trump this week, the Asian nation's trade minister said on Friday. The U.S. tariff on South Korean imports will be 15%, Trump said after meeting its ministers on Wednesday, down from a threatened 25%, but the U.S. gave scarce details, apart from social media posts by him and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Speaking to reporters as he arrived home from a visit to Washington, Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo said the two sides had an oral negotiation because of time constraints. "What we felt during this negotiation is that the U.S. trade environment is fundamentally changing. This is completely different from the first Trump term," Yeo said of the deal easing tension with a top-10 trading partner and key Asian ally. "I think we are entering a new normal era. So, although we have overcome this crisis, we cannot be relieved, because we do not know when we will face pressure from tariffs or non-tariff measures again." The White House, which issued factsheets on trade deals with Japan and the European Union a day after striking them, has not yet released a separate one on the pact with South Korea. Trump said South Korea would invest $350 billion in the United States in projects "owned and controlled by the United States" and selected by him. Lutnick said 90% of profits from the investments would go to the American people, while White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said they would go to the U.S. government to help repay debt. More discussions were necessary on the investment fund's profit structure, said Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan, who returned with Yeo. Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol, also one of the negotiation team, said detailed plans for the $350-billion investment would need be established. Wednesday's deal did not tackle most non-tariff barriers discussed during working-level talks, as well as security and foreign exchange aspects. About 30 DAP MPs visit Umno HQ for TVET briefing by Zahid

KUALA LUMPUR: Nearly 30 DAP members of parliament made a historic visit to the Umno headquarters at Menara Dato Onn earlier this week, signalling growing maturity and cooperation within the unity government. The MPs were attending a briefing on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), hosted by Deputy Prime Minister and Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who also chairs the national TVET Council. Kota Kinabalu MP Chan Foong Hin, in his Facebook post, described the occasion as a first for both parties, marking a significant milestone in post-GE15 political collaboration. "It marked the first time that such a large group of DAP MPs visited Umno's headquarters, a sign of maturity and cooperation within the unity government," Chan said. "The Madani government is not perfect. But we are serious in discharging our responsibilities. We are working to overcome ideological and party differences for the sake of national progress. Nation-building requires unity, not uniformity, and that's the spirit we're committed to," he said. Among the DAP leaders present were party secretary-general Anthony Loke, adviser Lim Guan Eng, and vice-chairman Chong Chieng Jen. The meeting also saw the attendance of Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani and Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, reflecting the broad-based support behind the government's TVET reform agenda. Umno's alliance with DAP in the formation of the unity government following the 2022 general election marked a dramatic shift in Malaysia's political dynamics. Once fierce adversaries, the two parties have since taken steps to demonstrate a new spirit of bipartisan cooperation. In June last year, Loke made headlines as the first DAP leader to attend the Umno general assembly alongside Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Several months later, Zahid, Asyraf and Barisan Nasional secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir attended DAP's national convention. The rare show of unity comes amid a series of developments that have further defined the government's agenda in recent weeks. Among them was the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) by Anwar, which sets out a strategic five-year blueprint to elevate Malaysia into a formidable middle power. The plan outlines long-term priorities in economic resilience, innovation and inclusive growth. Separately, Malaysia also secured a revision to a previously imposed 25 per cent US import tariff, bringing it down to 19 per cent. The move is expected to benefit local industries, especially rubber glove and furniture manufacturers, who can now compete on a more level playing field with Asean counterparts. Chan said these achievements demonstrated that the government's consistent, strategic approach was yielding results. "PMX has proven that his strategy works, and it's time we continue to stand behind him," he said.
