Indian students in US at risk of deportation over not declaring job status

These students admitted they were not currently engaged in any authorised employment, making them vulnerable to removal from the country.
The notices, issued by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), require students to respond within strict timelines—typically 15 days—or risk immediate termination of their visa status. However, many students decided against responding.
The trigger was the failure to report employment under the Optional Practical Training (OPT) or STEM OPT programme, or exceeding the allowed unemployment window.
Students on F-1 visas are permitted a total of 90 days of unemployment during regular OPT, and an additional 60 days for those under STEM extensions. Breaching this limit, or failing to update employment details in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), is considered a violation of visa rules.
'They asked me to submit a letter from my employer, proof of payroll, and an updated I-983 form within 15 days,' said a 26-year-old tech graduate, currently based in Texas.
'I panicked—I don't have a job. I've applied everywhere, but I haven't heard back. Now I don't know what to do.'
Those who fail to comply may have their SEVIS records terminated, which would mean immediate loss of legal status and the initiation of deportation proceedings. For many students, the threat of removal is not just about immigration—it's financial survival. The average Indian student graduating from a US institution carries an education loan burden ranging between Rs 25 to Rs 45 lakhs.

With no job, no way to repay, and no visa security, the crisis is pushing some to remain in the country unlawfully.
'I don't want to become illegal, but going back means financial ruin,' said a graduate in data analytics from Atlanta. 'My father took out a loan against our house. If I leave now, we're done. How?'
Some have refrained from responding to ICE altogether, fearing their confession of unemployment could speed up removal.
'It's a trap either way,' said a computer science student from Chicago. 'If I say I'm unemployed, they might deport me. If I stay silent, they'll still come after me. But at least I'll have time to figure something out.'
Immigration consultants are advising affected students to warn that silence may worsen their case. 'Not responding can be interpreted as an admission of guilt or non-compliance,' said Ravi Lothumalla, an immigration consultant based in Dallas. 'The right way is to respond honestly and seek reinstatement if possible, but many students don't even know they have that option.'

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday met Nadia Calvino, president of the European Investment Bank (EIB) Group, and proposed partnering with the bank to take India's digitization expertise to third countries. They met on the sidelines of the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FFD4) in Seville, Spain. The finance minister also noted educational exchange as a cornerstone of India-New Zealand ties with many Indian students pursuing higher education in New Zealand. Reti agreed on the need for enhancing education sector ties, and also shared New Zealand's experience in engaging with the Pacific region. Sitharaman also met Elmer Schialer Salcedo, Foreign Minister of Peru and Reem Alabali-Radovan, Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Germany, on the sidelines of FFD4 on Monday evening. The finance minister discussed deepening strategic partnerships across FinTech, trade, investment, mining and defence, as well as the potential for collaboration in infrastructure projects, particularly the railways with the Peruvian minister. Sitharaman highlighted India's expertise in building rail links and manufacturing of rolling stock. Salcedo said that he looked forward to India's participation in international bids for three rail links being developed in Peru. The Union Finance Minister shared India's interest in diversifying exports to Peru, especially in automobiles, pharmaceuticals, textiles, engineering goods, and IT services; and valued imports of critical minerals such as copper and lithium from Peru - potentially key to India's energy transition and industrial growth. With the German minister Radovan, Sitharaman discussed various areas of collaboration under the India-Germany Green and Sustainable Development Partnership including renewable energy, urban mobility, sustainable urban development and sustainable livelihoods through ecology.

Chhattisgarh launches One-Click Single Window System 2.0 to boost investment, ease of doing business
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Tuesday launched the 'One-Click Single Window System 2.0' at the Chhattisgarh Industry Dialogue–2 in Raipur, projecting it as a major step towards making the state a national hub for future-facing industries such as semiconductors, AI, pharmaceuticals, defence, and green hydrogen. 'Our new industrial policy is focused on employment generation and economic prosperity,' the CM said, adding that over 20,000 youth will benefit from the Rs 1.23 lakh crore worth of investment proposals received from 11 companies. Sai also announced the approval of the draft Chhattisgarh State Logistics Policy 2025, which aims to transform the state into a national logistics hub. 'Our geographical position gives us a connectivity edge. The new policy will attract global and domestic logistics players, strengthen export infrastructure, and make warehousing affordable for industries and farmers,' he said. In the last six months alone, Chhattisgarh has received investment proposals worth Rs 5.5 lakh crore. The state accounted for 3.71 per cent of India's total investment inflows in FY2025. The new One-Click Single Window System 2.0 integrates online applications, departmental approvals, and subsidies. 'It ensures transparent, real-time approvals for industrial set-ups,' Sai said. Commerce and Industries Minister Lakhan Lal Dewangan said that with the new online approval mechanisms, industrial areas are now offering land for online allotment. 'Chhattisgarh is fast becoming a top-tier industrial state,' he said. Dead jeweller's wife flees with 1cr gold, leaves kids
Lucknow: Barely eight months after her jeweller husband died of blood cancer, a 40-year-old woman in Barabanki decamped with gold worth Rs 1 crore from the jewellery shop vault to join her paramour, leaving behind her two children, aged 8 and 14 years. An FIR in connection with the incident has been lodged and the police are now searching Sweety Rastogi and Kunwar Harshit Rajveer, a youth from Barabanki, with whom she allegedly maintained an illicit relationship, said SHO, Kotwali, Ram Kishun. According to the FIR filed by Pushpa Devi, her younger daughter-in-law, Sweety, widow of her son Amit Rastogi, stole precious jewellery belonging to the entire family. The family resides in Chhaya Chauraha area of Barabanki. Pushpa said that after the death of her son Amit, who ran the jewellery shop, Amit's teenage son, Arsh Rastogi (14), took charge of the shop under her supervision. Meanwhile, Sweety grew close to Rajveer. The complainant detailed in the FIR that Sweety took advantage of Arsh's absence from the shop due to a chickenpox infection around ten days ago. During this period, Sweety allegedly opened the shop locker and stole the gold ornaments worth Rs 1 crore. Later, CCTV footage showed Sweety opening the locker and placing jewellery into a bag. On June 28, Pushpa convened a family meeting in the presence of Sweety's brother, Abhishek Kumar Soni, who came from Lucknow. During this meeting, Sweety allegedly confessed to the theft and assured the family that she would retrieve the stolen ornaments from her lover. However, the following morning, Sweety quietly left the house without informing anyone. She also left her mobile phone behind. When Pushpa Devi noticed her absence, she contacted Sweety's brother, who in turn called Harshit Rajveer. When Harshit threatened them with dire consequences, Pushpa Devi lodged an FIR, said the SHO.
