Two suspects arrested in Bedfordview for copper cable theft
Two male suspects were apprehended by members of the Bedfordview SAPS, Gauteng traffic wardens, the Gauteng Traffic Infrastructure Unit (Eastern Corridor), and crime prevention wardens on July 28 while conducting patrols in the area.
The suspects were stopped on the Van Buuren off-ramp from the N3 after they were spotted pushing a trolley loaded with copper cables.

'Upon questioning, the individuals admitted to stealing the cables from the corner of Van Buuren and Van Der Linde streets.
'Further investigation confirmed that the cables had been removed from streetlights,' said Bedfordview SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Lillian Modiga.
The stolen copper cables, measuring approximately 30m in length, are estimated to be worth R30 000.
Both suspects have been charged with tampering with essential infrastructure.
An additional charge relating to undocumented persons has also been filed.

'It is also alleged that the accused officers failed to record all the merchandise seized from the shop at the police station. The shop manager allegedly disputed the quantity and type of merchandise booked in the occurrence book to the Station Commander,' Suping said. JOHANNESBURG - Almost 500 illegal miners brought to the surface from a mine in Barberton in Mpumalanga last Friday are set to appear at the Barberton Magistrate's Court on Monday. The group faces charges of contravening the Immigration Act and trespassing, while others are facing charges of possession of gold-bearing material. Their arrest follows an intense operation by law enforcement and mine security as part of Operation Vala Umgodi in the province. The police initially estimated that 1,000 miners had been arrested but later revised that number down by half. Mpumalanga police spokesperson. Ppho Nonyane-Mpe: "Members of the SAPS, including the team that is working there in collaboration with home affairs officials, are currently busy with the purifying the number in terms of how many will be charged for what type of offence." Nonyane-Mpe said that an operation was underway to retrieve zama zamas that remained underground. "The plans in terms of the others that went deep, our members from Vala Umgodi, in collaboration with the mine security and also the Department of Minerals and Energy, will regroup and also esure that we communicate whatever action will be taken following this development."

The officers were taken into custody while on duty. According to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), they face charges of corruption and theft. Ipid spokesperson Lizzy Suping said the arrests are linked to a multi-disciplinary law enforcement operation that took place on 4 June in Edenvale, initiated by the Premier of Gauteng. During the operation, the officers allegedly raided a shop, confiscated cigarettes, and took R35 000 in cash along with three packs of headache tablets (Panados) estimated at R5 000.
