Thompson's hat dropped off his head as he served, but he somehow managed to catch it and play the rest of the point with it in his hand.
The world No.44 won the point and clinched the opener 6-4.

He claimed the hindrance law should have come into effect as he was put off by the hat falling.
Darderi raged: "It is a rule, you are not allowed to play with the cap like this. You are not."
Official Lahyani immediately made a phone call to check but informed the players that no rule was broken.
An infuriated Darderi then angrily threw his racquet towards his bag to gasps from fans.

The ruling was then explained by BBC commentator and former Wimbledon doubles champ Todd Woodbridge, who said: "What happened in this point is Jordan Thompson hit the serve and his hat came off with it.
"But in the same motion he grabs it in his left hand.

"He holds it and then plays the whole point, which is multiple shots.
"Now, the umpire could have said, 'replay the point - hindrance'.
"You get one opportunity for that, if your hat falls off your head or if your ball falls out your pocket, they will replay it once.
"But if it happens a second time it is immediately the point to the opponent.

"The other thing that could have happened is Darderi saying, 'hold on', and putting his hand up.
"The umpire then would have ordered a replay of the point.
"He has the right to argue, but he is going to lose because he did not say anything in the first place.
"It is like going back and challenging a call, when the system was in place, you must challenge in that moment."

Novak Djokovic joins Roger Federer in exclusive Wimbledon men's club

Novak Djokovic brought up a century of Wimbledon wins as he moved smoothly into the fourth round. The 38-year-old eased past fellow Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3 6-0 6-4 on Centre Court at the All England Club. Djokovic is now just five wins behind Wimbledon's only other male centurion, his great rival Roger Federer on 105 match victories. 'Very historic, it sounds very nice,' he said after Saturday's win. 'Tennis made me who I am, it has given me incredible things in life so I try not to take anything for granted, especially at my age and trying to compete with the younger players. READ MORE 'Wimbledon is a favourite tournament, not just for myself but for most players. Any history I make at my favourite tournament, I'm blessed.' Apart from being broken when he served for the match, it was a pretty routine display for the seven-time champion, although one spectacular diving backhand volleyed winner after a lung-busting rally will make the highlights reel. 'It was kind of like an ecstasy, to be honest, in that moment,' added Djokovic. 'Yeah, I was super, super happy. It came at a really important moment as well. I think 4-3, deuce, long point. 'We both were running around each other, around the whole court. Then just that diving backhand volley down-the-line passing shot. Can't wait to see the highlights.' That shot thrilled the Saturday SW19 crowd and a host of sports glitterati in the Royal Box including Sir Geoff Hurst, Sir Steve Redgrave and Lord Botham. The Centre Court punters could be forgiven for feeling a little short-changed, however, after three one-sided contests. Certainly the 11pm curfew was never in danger after Jannik Sinner dropped just five games against Pedro Martinez and Iga Świątek beat Danielle Collins in straight sets, before Djokovic disposed of his 25-year-old countryman in an hour and 47 minutes. Djokovic, bidding for a record 25th grand slam title, will face Australian 11th seed Alex De Minaur in his 17th appearance in the last 16.

Paul O'Connell content with how Irish went about their businss in Georgia

Ireland interim head coach Paul O'Connell hailed his side for dealing with a fired-up Georgian side in difficult wet conditions in Tbilisi before running out 34-5 winners. Two tries from Tommy O'Brien — one of half a dozen debuts on a rainy night in Georgia — and one apiece from stand-in skipper Craig Casey and flanker Nick Timoney, recalled for the first time in three years, was enough to ensure Ireland made it six wins from six in a real banana skin fixture. 'It was a very important game, a lot of players away with the Lions,' said O'Connell after his first game in charge of his country. 'We had a load of guys who were just dying for an opportunity and you wonder how they will take that opportunity, particularly some of them hadn't played games in a while. 'I'm very happy with how they went about their business. They had a load of intent in what they did and they were really accurate with that intent,' said O'Connell before his side departs to Lisbon on Sunday for their clash with Portugal next Saturday. Skipper Casey crowned his first game as captain with a try and the scrum-half from Limerick, who was in constant and concise communication with Italian referee Andrea Piardi (no stranger to Munster fans after the Bulls debacle last season) was understandably pleased with how it all went in difficult conditions at Mikheil Meskhi Stadium in Tbilisi. 'Obviously, very happy,' said Casey. 'It was a bit wetter than we expected during the week and we had to adapt our game. I thought we managed the game fairly well. Our forwards were top class tonight so we have a lot to owe to them. 'The feeling in the group is awesome. It's a great start to the summer tour. There were a few lads making their first caps and we wanted to make it special for them and their families and thankfully we did that.'
