TTD plans major greening drive on Tirumala Hills
To achieve this, the TTD has allocated Rs 400 lakh for a comprehensive greening initiative that will be implemented from 2025-26 to 2027-28.
The move follows the directive of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who, during his visit to Tirumala on October 5, stressed the importance of ecological stability in the region given its spiritual and pilgrimage prominence. He instructed the Forest Department and TTD to take swift and sustainable action to enhance the area's forest cover.
Accordingly, the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Tirupati has prepared a detailed three-year action plan covering 3,035 hectares of forest under TTD's control. The plan includes a range of interventions such as Assisted Natural Regeneration (ANR), drone-based seed ball broadcasting, gap planting, removal of invasive plant species, habitat enhancement, and fire safety measures. Efforts to restore soil moisture, through the construction of percolation tanks and other soil and moisture conservation (SMC) works are also part of the proposal, along with essential administrative and minor road-related works.
A breakdown of the financial outlay includes Rs 171.46 lakh for ANR initiatives including nursery development and seed dispersal using drones; Rs 65.68 lakh for fire protection and wildlife conservation efforts such as creating fire lines and employing seasonal fire watchers; and Rs 55.41 lakh for habitat enhancement measures like water pit construction and weed clearance.
Additionally, Rs 24.90 lakh is set aside for SMC projects, Rs 32.54 lakh for administrative and field staff needs and Rs.50 lakh for minimal road restoration required to support these activities.
The TTD Board reviewed and revised the initial Rs 650 lakh proposal submitted by the Forest Department. While endorsing most ecological components, the Board reduced the proposed Rs 300 lakh allocation for road work to Rs 50 lakh, clarifying that such infrastructure should serve greening goals rather than become a standalone objective.
TTD Chairman BR Naidu, who chaired the Board meeting on May 20, 2025, reaffirmed the organisation's commitment to the initiative. He indicated that the Board would seek additional funding through donor contributions and relevant government schemes.
The greening drive is also expected to expand into adjacent reserve forest areas covering 6,000 to 7,000 hectares, with coordination support from the State Forest Department. The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests has been asked to oversee the extended effort through the respective conservator and DFO.
With the TTD Board's approval secured, the proposal is now set to be forwarded to the State government for final clearance. Once approved, phased funding will be released to the DFO, Tirupat – Rs 173.64 lakh in 2025-26, followed by around Rs 113 lakh each in 2026-27 and 2027-28 - to implement the greening programme as planned.

Large amounts of dust fly on the roads after heavy vehicles like trucks or buses pass by. Commuters behind those vehicles cannot stop breathing, nor can they breathe properly. Manisha Chavan, a resident of the Devkar Panand area of the city, said, "For the past two days, all the members in my family and also in the neighbourhood have said that they are facing sore throats with itchy eyes due to the dust particles flying in the air. But KMC is least bothered about the sufferings of the common man."

MCC's plastic bottle recycling project hits financial roadblock
Mysuru: The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has hit a roadblock in its initiative to install plastic water bottle recycling machines at select locations across the city due to a lack of funds. Despite Mysuru being ranked as the third cleanest city in the country, the city civic body, which generates 550 tonnes of solid waste, including 50 tonnes of plastic, is struggling to manage the plastic waste. MCC had planned to install these machines at nine different locations in the city for better management of plastic waste. The then MCC commissioner, Ashad Ur Rehaman Sharief, who initiated the project, had installed one machine on the MCC premises on an experimental basis in July 2024. The machine accepts empty water bottles of up to one litre capacity and disintegrates them into plastic flakes, which are then treated and used for producing other items, such as bins. People who feed plastic bottles into the machine will be rewarded Rs 1 per litre, authorities stated. Each machine has the capacity to crush 1000 used one-litre plastic water bottles, after which the waste can be recycled. However, the installation of these machines has not yet been realised. MCC health officer Dr Venkatesh said, "Installation of these machines helps to minimise the usage of single-use plastic materials and thereby end plastic menace in the city." Speaking to TOI, MCC commissioner Syed Asif Tanveer said he would look into these projects initiated by his predecessor to deal with the plastic menace. "A fresh proposal will be sent to the deputy commissioner seeking his approval," he said. Former mayor Shivakumar said, "It would be helpful to rid the city of plastic bottles if MCC comes up with such projects, but it must verify its financial resources before making such big announcements."

Despite eco-friendly push, PoP Ganesh idols still in huge demand across Andhra Pradesh
1 2 Visakhapatnam: The demand for Ganesh idols made from plaster of Paris (PoP) remains high across Andhra Pradesh, despite growing awareness about the environmental hazards associated with their use. The lower prices and attractive designs of PoP idols have made them a preferred choice among many Ganesh pandal organizers in cities like Vizag and Vijayawada. According to idol makers and vendors, the majority of customers prefer PoP idols due to their affordability and aesthetic appeal. Only a small percentage of customers opt for eco-friendly idols made from natural clay. Ramesh, a Ganesh idol maker and vendor at Yendada in Vizag, said that out of ten customers, only two buy eco-friendly idols. The prices of both PoP and eco-friendly idols have increased this year due to a surge in material costs. Price of PoP idols have increased by 10-15%, while eco-friendly idols have become 20% more expensive. An 8-foot PoP Ganesh idol costs between Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000, while an eco-friendly idol of the same size costs between Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000, said Ram and Sanjay, idols makers from Rajasthan. Some Ganesh pandal organizers are willing to spend up to Rs 2-3 lakh to procure large PoP idols from Hyderabad. Anil Kumar, a member of a Ganesh pandal, said that using PoP idols eliminates the need for elaborate decorations, which can be expensive. While some idol makers have minimized the use of PoP by 10-20%, very few have made significant reductions by using a mixture of PoP and clay. Social activists have expressed concerns about the environmental impact of PoP idols, which are not biodegradable and contribute to water pollution when immersed in water bodies. The Andhra Pradesh police have permitted the setup of over 16,000 Ganesh pandals across the state, including around 3,700 in Vizag city.
