
British women running on empty, new research reveals
The number of men and women in work is closer than ever, with a majority of men (73%) and women (71%) in paid work. Yet, it's the unpaid load that paints a different picture.
The majority of women work full time, yet 14% still spend up to 20 hours per week on domestic tasks and household responsibilities such as cooking, cleaning, shopping and admin versus only 9% of men.
Nearly of of the women surveyed said they covered the bulk of 'invisible labour' (Image: Credit MI / Optibac) Nearly half (49%) of British women say the bulk of 'invisible labour' - things like planning meals, managing the family schedule (e.g. children's activities and clubs, school admin, family trips) and remembering birthdays - falls to them all of the time. Just 1 in 3 (36%) men say the same.
With this cumulative mental and physical load, it's perhaps no surprise that nearly a third (32%) of women admit to feeling constantly stressed or on the verge of not coping.
Despite doing more, women are sleeping less, with on average British women getting just six hours of sleep per night (29%), compared to the average man who averages 7 hours of sleep (30%).
Worryingly, the NHS advises women to get at least 7 hours' sleep per night, yet the data shows on average, women are losing a full night's sleep per week.

The research also found women are shouldering a higher burden of health concerns, with more than half (52%) reporting experiencing anxiety, while two in five (41%) struggle with brain fog and difficulty concentrating.
Digestive issues, including bloating, irregularity and IBS, are reported by 29%, with 22% citing skin issues and breakouts and 1 in 5 (21%) reporting hormonal imbalances.
Despite this, women are more likely to dismiss their own health concerns, 69% say they've downplayed symptoms due to feeling too busy, compared to just 60% of men.
And worryingly, almost half (49%) of women believe men are more likely to be taken seriously when raising a health issue, yet 69% of men don't believe that's true.
Supermodel, TV star and Women's Wellbeing advocate, Jodie Kidd said: 'These statistics help scratch the surface of what it's really like to be a woman today with so many things to juggle.
"As a mum, fiancée, daughter, sister, carer, business owner and more - there just aren't enough hours in the day to do it all.
'And often, it's those invisible tasks - the school admin, the planning, the taking care of everyone around you - that are the hardest work of all. It's another layer of mental load.'
The Women's Wellbeing report further reveals that more than half (55%) of women say they feel guilty when they do take time for themselves, while nearly 2 in 5 (39%) men say they 'never' feel guilty.
With a combination of work, home and family, and societal pressures, it's perhaps no surprise that more than half (58%) of British women fantasise about quitting or pausing work and family responsibilities due to burnout compared to 45% of men.

Heart issues among endurance athletes studied by scientists
Older male endurance athletes may be at higher risk of heart scarring and related complications, according to a new study. Sudden cardiac death is a 'leading cause of mortality' in athletes, experts said as they set out to investigate whether endurance athletes had heart scarring and linked heart rhythm problems. Academics studied 106 former competitive cyclists and triathletes who exercise for more than 10 hours a week for at least 15 years. Experts from the University of Leeds scanned their hearts and had an implantable loop recorder fitted to assess their heart rhythms. They found that 50 of the 106 athletes (47%) had scarring on their hearts, particularly in the left ventricle – the main pumping chamber of the heart. This compares to 11% of 27 non endurance athletes studied for comparison. During a two-year follow up period they found that 22% of the athletes had an abnormal heart rhythm, according to the study which was funded by the the British Heart Foundation and published in the journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging. They concluded that the athletes who had heart scarring were over 4.5 times more likely to experience an abnormal heart rhythm episode – which is linked with an increased risk of sudden cardiac arrest – compared to those without scarring. It is thought that among endurance athletes scarring could be caused by levels of exercise when the heart has to work even harder to pump blood. Dr Sonya Babu-Narayan, clinical director at the British Heart Foundation and consultant cardiologist, said: 'There's no doubt that exercise is good for our hearts – it helps to reduce blood pressure and cholesterol, manage our weight, and it boosts our mental health. 'But in some veteran male athletes, this early research suggests that intense exercise over many years may have affected their heart health. 'More research in veteran endurance athletes – both in men and women – will be needed to identify the small number of people who have the kind of heart scarring, together with other risk factors, that mean their life could be saved by having an implantable defibrillator.' One of the athletes who took part in the trial was Brian Cookson, keen cyclist and former president of British Cycling and Union Cycliste Internationale – cycling's world governing body. The 74-year-old grandfather from Whalley, Lancashire, said the trial could have saved his life. While training at the Manchester Velodrome he started feeling unwell and his sports watch recorded his heart rate had reached 238 beats per minute (bpm), and stayed that way for around 15 minutes. 'I was pushing it a little bit on the track, but not absolutely full gas, as we say in cycling,' Mr Cookson said. He contacted the team involved with the study who reviewed data from his implanted device to record his heart rhythm. They were able to see he had suffered an episode of ventricular tachycardia – an abnormally fast heartbeat where the heart's ventricles contract too quickly and do not pump blood around the body effectively. 'The next day, I got a call. They said, 'Stop riding your bike, don't do anything more strenuous than walking until we can get you in here because we think you need an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD)',' he said. He was fitted with one of the devices in August last year which shocks the heart if it goes into an abnormal rhythm. Mr Cookson, who is still cycling, said: 'I keep a closer eye on my heart rate now and if I'm getting to 150bpm I'll start backing off. 'I'm so grateful to have been part of this study. It might well have saved my life. 'Without it, I might have carried on pushing myself until something more serious happened.' Dr Peter Swoboda, associate professor in cardiology and consultant cardiologist at the University of Leeds, who led the study, said: 'In our study, the athletes who experienced dangerous heart rhythms often had symptoms first. 'I'd encourage anyone who experiences blackouts, dizziness, chest pain or breathlessness, whether during sport or at rest, to speak to their doctor and get it checked out. 'These results shouldn't put people off regular exercise. 'Our study focused on a very select group, and not all the athletes involved were found to have scarring in their hearts. We can all benefit from being more active, and this study is an important step towards helping people take part in sport as safely as possible.'

Fifth of motorists have drunk alcohol after 10pm ahead of morning drive
Road safety charity IAM RoadSmart, which commissioned the poll, warned that drinking alcohol the night before getting behind the wheel can pose a 'serious threat' because a 'groggy head' means slower reaction times. The survey of 1,072 UK motorists also indicated that 38% of people who have consumed several alcoholic drinks ahead of driving before 9am stopped drinking after 9pm. Charity Drinkaware states that alcohol is removed from the body at a rate of one unit per hour, although this varies depending on a person's weight, liver health and metabolism speed. Around three large glasses of wine or three pints of high-strength beer or cider is the equivalent of nine units. Someone consuming those drinks up to 10pm could still have alcohol in their body at 7am or later, IAM RoadSmart warned. Nicholas Lyes, the charity's director of policy and standards, said: 'Drink-driving is a killer, and drivers may be unwittingly getting into their vehicle in the morning unaware that they could be doing so illegally if they have been drinking alcohol the night before, posing a serious threat to the safety of others. 'Even if they are just inside the legal limit, the level of alcohol in their system will impair their reaction times. 'Moreover, consuming alcohol impacts on sleep quality.' Chief Constable Jo Shiner, the National Police Chiefs' Council lead for roads policing, said: 'There is simply no excuse for getting behind the wheel when you are impaired through drink or drugs, and this includes the morning after. 'If you choose to do so you are putting your life and the lives of others at risk.' The survey also suggested nearly a third (31%) of drivers in the previous 12 months had been with a friend or relative who drank alcohol before getting into a vehicle. Some 72% of this group warned them they should not drive, while 23% said they took no action. Four out of five (81%) people polled said rehabilitation courses should become mandatory for anyone convicted of a drink-drive offence. Currently the courses are sometimes offered in return for a shorter driving ban. Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency statistics previously obtained by the PA news agency revealed 27,837 British motorists were convicted of drink-driving multiple times in the 11 years to July 20 2024. Some 372 were caught at least four times, including four who were prosecuted on seven occasions. Only time sobers you up — nothing else works. It takes about an hour to process one unit of alcohol, meaning you could still be over the limit the next morning. If you're driving early, it's safest to skip the drinks. That was up from 260 the previous year and was the highest total since 2009 when 380 deaths were recorded. Separate figures show there are more drink drive-related casualties in July than any other month of the year. The drink-drive limit in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. Nowhere else in Europe has a limit above 50mg/100ml. The Scottish Government reduced its limit to that level in 2014. A DfT spokesperson said: 'We take road safety extremely seriously, and there are already strict penalties in place for those who are caught drink-driving, with rehabilitation courses offered to those convicted and banned from driving for over a year.
