Jackie Shroff says Dev Anand replaced him with Mithun Chakraborty in Swami Dada, made him ‘Shakti Kapoor ka chamcha'

Hindustan Times6 days ago
Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff has been entertaining audiences with his films for over four decades. In a conversation with Kunickaa Sadanand on her podcast, the actor recalled how Dev Anand once replaced him with Mithun Chakraborty as the second lead in what was meant to be his Bollywood debut. Still, Jackie went ahead with the film wholeheartedly, owing to his admiration for the superstar. Jackie Shroff recalls being replaced by Mithun Chakraborty in debut film.
When Dev Anand offered Jackie Shroff second lead in Swami Dada
Jackie recalled his excitement when Dev Anand offered him a role in his film Swami Dada and said, 'It so happened that he offered me the second lead. I couldn't believe my eyes, my ears that Dev sahab was sitting in front of me. His son, Sunil, was also there. He told me, 'He's (his father) offering a film.' I said, 'Wow!' I went home and told my mother I was getting the second lead. The whole society went like, 'Woohoo, Jaggu hero!''
Jackie Shroff on being demoted to third villain
He recounted being demoted to the third villain and said, 'After 15 days, Dev sahab called and asked me to visit him. When I went there, he told me, 'Mithun is here. So I'm going to give that role to Mithun. Because he's a better dancer. I've seen you dance, you're good, but he's better. Plus, he's a senior.' The dates you brought to me, for that, I'll give you a role in the villain's den. And villain's den mein Shakti Kapoor ka chamcha ban gaya main (I became Shakti Kapoor's henchman in the villain's den). My demotion happened in 15 days, from the second lead to the third villain. I went back home and told my mother I got a villain's role (laughs).'
He added that he still gave the film his all, driven by his love and respect for Dev Anand. Jackie said that being demoted didn't bother him much as he still had the honour of working in Dev Anand's film.
For the unversed, Jackie made his Bollywood debut in the film Swami Dada, playing Shakti Kapoor's henchman. He later rose to fame with Subhash Ghai's Hero, opposite Meenakshi Sheshadri. The film was a huge commercial success and turned both leads into overnight stars. Jackie went on to star in hits like Andar Baahar, Karma, Jaanoo, Yudh, Ram Lakhan, Parinda and Tridev, among others.
Jackie was last seen in Housefull 5. Directed by Tarun Mansukhani, the film also featured Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Nana Patekar, Jacqueline Fernandez, Sonam Bajwa, Nargis Fakhri, Fardeen Khan and Chitrangada Singh, among others. The film was a commercial success, earning ₹300 crore worldwide at the box office. He will next be seen in Anupam Kher's directorial Tanvi The Great, set to release in theatres on 18 July.

Anupam Kher Recalls Dilip Kumar's Witty Warning On Karma Set: 'Pathaan Ka Hath Hai...'

Last Updated: Anupam Kher reminisced about working with Dilip Kumar, who inspired his career. They collaborated on four films, with Karma being memorable. Veteran actor Anupam Kher recently shared fond memories of working with the late Dilip Kumar, a legend he credits as the reason he pursued acting. During a recent appearance on Aap Ki Adalat, Kher talked about the profound influence the cinematic icon had on his life and career, and narrated moments from their collaboration on several films. Kher and Dilip Kumar shared screen space in four films — Karma (1986), Kanoon Apna Apna (1989), Izzatdaar (1990), and Saudagar (1991). Among these, their first collaboration on Subhash Ghai's Karma remains especially memorable for Kher. Recalling the first time he met Dilip Kumar on set, Kher said, 'I was already dressed as Dr. Dang at 7 am. Dilip sahab came to the set at 11 am. He got down from his white Mercedes in a white shirt. I kept looking at him. I thought, 'Wow, he's the guy why I became an actor.'" Kher also listed Kumar's performances in films such as Madhumati (1958), Ram Aur Shyam (1967), Gopi (1970), and Devdas (1955) as key influences on his acting journey. 'I almost had my nose broken while buying tickets for Gopi in black," he recalled. During the shoot of Karma, director Subhash Ghai noticed Kher's admiration and took him aside to warn him, 'Tu jis pyaar se inko dekh raha hai, tu mujhe marvaega! Tu meri film ka villain hai!" To this, Kher cleverly responded, 'Anupam Kher Dilip Kumar se pyaar karta hai, Dr. Dang Vishwa Pratap se pyaar nahi karta." One of the standout moments he remembered was filming the iconic slap scene. In a bid to impress Kumar, Kher suggested he be slapped for real. But the legendary actor gently declined: 'Beta, Pathaan ka haath hai, behosh ho jaega." Later, Kumar praised Kher's performance, telling Ghai, 'A dangerous actor has arrived. He'll go a long way." Kher added, 'That moment gave me immense confidence." He also shared a humorous incident involving apples, where a teasing Kumar spoke about 'Diminishing Marginal Utility" while Kher was simply hungry. 'I told him I'm enjoying it as much as I did the first one. Please stop this," he laughed. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Dilip Kumar said ‘Beta, pathaan ka hath hai, behosh ho jaega' when Anupam Kher suggested to slap him for real in Karma

Anupam Kher looks up to Dilip Kumar as an inspiration. He considers the late legendary thespian as the reason why he became an actor in the first place. The two worked in four films together — Subhash Ghai's Karma (1986) and Saudagar (1991), B Gopal's Kanoon Apna Apna (1989), and J Hemambar and K Bapayya's Izzatdaar (1990). Kher recently recalled the first time he met Kumar on the sets of Karma in the early 1980s. 'I was already dressed as Dr. Dang at 7 am. Dilip sahab came to the set at 11 am. He got down from his white Mercedes in a white shirt. I kept looking at him. I thought, 'Wow, he's the guy why I became an actor,'' the actor said. Anupam Kher listed Bimal Roy's 1958 horror romance Madhumati, Tapi Chanakya's 1967 dramedy Ram Aur Shyam, A Bhimsingh's 1970 action drama Gopi, and the 1955 romance Devdas as the films of Dilip Kumar that influenced him as an actor. 'I almost had my noise broken while buying tickets for Gopi in black,' Kher recalled on India TV's Aap Ki Adalat. 'I kept looking at him, how his hands looked like, how his face looked like. So Subhash Ghai took me to a corner and said, 'Tu jis pyaar se inko dekh raha hai, tu mujhe marvaega! Tu meri film ka villain hai! (The love with which you're looking at him, you'll ruin the film! You're the villain of my film!) Don't look at him with so much love,'' recalled Kher. However, Anupam Kher had a response ready. He claimed it was the actor who was in love with Dilip Kumar, not the character. 'Anupam Kher Dilip Kumar se pyaar karta hai, Dr. Dang Vishwa Pratap se pyaar nahi karta (Anupam Kher loves Dilip Kumar, but Dr. Dang doesn't love Vishwa Pratap),' Kher replied, responding to the characters played by him and Kumar respectively in Karma. Kher also recollected shooting the iconic slap scene in the film Karma. 'I committed a mistake. In order to impress him, I said, 'Sir, slap me for real.' He told me, 'Beta, Pathaan ka haath hai, beshosh ho jaega (Son, it's a Pathaan's hand, you'd faint after the slap).' But when he watched the scene, he told Subhash Ghai, 'A dangerous actor has arrived. He'll go a long way.' I then thought now that Dilip Kumar has endorsed me, no power in the world can stop me,' said Kher. Dilip Kumar wanted to tease him so he told Anupam Kher the story of the succulent apples his father used to sell. 'He said, 'It happens in Diminishing Marginal Utility that when you taste the second apple, then you don't enjoy it as much.' But I told him I'm enjoying it as much as I did the first one. Please stop this,' Kher recalled, laughing.
