Twins place All-Star Byron Buxton (ribcage) on IL
The move came two days after Twins manager Rocco Baldelli told reporters Buxton wouldn't require an IL stint.
Buxton, 31, left Saturday's 9-3 loss to the visiting Washington Nationals because of left-side soreness and sat out Sunday and Monday. His move to the IL is retroactive to Sunday.
Though Buxton has dealt with a spate of injuries throughout his career, the two-time All-Star has mostly been healthy this season except for going on the concussion injured list in May.
Buxton is hitting .282 with 23 homers, 59 RBIs and 17 steals in 85 games this season. He has a .343 on-base percentage, .561 slugging percentage and .905 OPS. He is a career .249 hitter with 156 homers and 412 RBIs in 857 games for the Twins since the 2015 season.
In corresponding roster moves, the Twins reinstated catcher Ryan Jeffers from the paternity list and selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Pierson Ohl from Triple-A St. Paul.
Jeffers, 28, is batting .254 with seven homers and 34 RBIs in 83 games this season.
Ohl, 25, has yet to make his major league debut. In 22 games (five starts) split among Class-A Fort Myers, Double-A Wichita and St. Paul, Ohl has gone 5-2 with a 2.17 ERA and two saves. He's fanned 79 batters and walked just 10.

August 1 - After unloading nearly half of their major league roster approaching the MLB trade deadline, the Minnesota Twins made eight roster additions Friday. The Twins recalled six players from Triple-A St. Paul and purchased the contract of two other players to fill out the major league club in advance of a series opener Friday on the road against the Cleveland Guardians. The recalled players were right-handers Travis Adams and Pierson Ohl, infielders Ryan Fitzgerald and Edouard Julien, outfielder Alan Roden and utility player Austin Martin. Minnesota purchased the contracts of right-handers Erasmo Ramirez and Jose Urena. All eight players have at least one game of major league experience, though Adams, Ohl and Fitzgerald have seven games of experience combined. Ramirez has 13 years of major league experience, making 327 appearances with six clubs, while Urena has pitched for 11 seasons and has made 241 appearances for nine clubs. Ohl returns after making his major league debut Tuesday and being optioned back to St. Paul afterward. The Twins had the most high-profile trade of the deadline Thursday when they sent shortstop Carlos Correa back to his original club, the Houston Astros. Minnesota also traded relievers Griffin Jax, Louis Varland, Brock Stewart and Danny Coulombe, while outfielder Harrison Bader, utility man Willi Castro and first baseman Ty France all were shipped to new clubs. Correa waved a no-trade clause in his contract in order to seal a shock return to the Astros on Thursday. He was named Rookie of the Year and a two-time All-Star during his previous stint in Houston. 'I had some conversations with the front office in Minnesota, and we were not moving (in the direction) I thought we were after making the playoffs (in 2023),' Correa said on Thursday. 'They agreed with me that it was time to move me. I let them know there was only one team I would allow that to happen.' The Twins, who have been up for sale since last October, agreed to take on just $33million of the $104m still owed to Correa through 2028.
