Who was Didarul Islam?
Didarul Islam was a veteran on the force and had served for three and a half years. Islam, 36, was assigned to the 47th precinct.
He was Bangladeshi immigrant and his wife was eight-month pregnant, with a baby on the way. Islam has two children, the NYPD police chief said.
Mayor Eric Adams said he was a person of faith, and hailed him as a 'true blue New Yorker'.
'He made the ultimate sacrifice', Jessica S. Tisch, the commissioner, said.
The police chief went on to state that Islam had put himself in harm's way and was shot in cold blood. He was 'wearing a uniform that stood for the promise he made to this city,' Tisch added.
'He died as he lived – a hero,' she concluded.
Tributes began to pour in for Islam, with Queens Shomrim, a volunteer organization, stating 'Queens Shomrim sends heartfelt condolences and support to the family, friends, and fellow officers of Officer Didarul Islam of the 47th Precinct. He made the ultimate sacrifice of keeping all of us safe while in the line of duty. We stand with the NYPD and the community during this difficult time.'
Islam had joined the force in December 2021, and was off-duty Monday, working as security for the Rudin Management Company. However, he was in uniform.
During the press conference in the aftermath of the shooting, it was also shared that Islam was hardworking and was proud to wear his uniform and shield. He went out each day to provide for his family, and did what he had to do, including working overtime, it was shared.
Islam's family is understandably devastated by the loss, including his wife, who is pregnant, and his father who won't get a chance to see his son again.

Kolkata Police Probe Espionage Angle In Arrest Of Bangladeshi Model Shanta Paul
The officials of the Kolkata Police are probing to figure out whether Shanta Paul, the Bangladeshi model arrested from Kolkata earlier this week on charges of illegally staying in the country after securing fake Indian identity documents, was working as a spy in the country just like Haryana-based YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra. The officials are probing this new angle after learning through her social media account that Paul went to the India-Nepal-China border and recorded a video. Police investigation also revealed that Paul had opened a page on social media called 'Asan Travels Kolkata and Bangladesh' where she was promoting her tourism business. The police officials are also investigating whether Paul took a loan from any state-owned bank in India to open a hotel, based on her Facebook post. A city police insider said that Paul had also travelled to several places in West Bengal and neighbouring Sikkim. "She posted photographs and videos of her visits on social media. As a travel vlogger, she went to Nathu La in Sikkim. There, she took pictures of the India-Nepal-China border. Investigation is on to ascertain whether there are similarities between her case and that of Jyoti Malhotra, as she also used to travel to different places in India as a travel vlogger and take pictures and videos there," the police insider added. Jyoti Malhotra was an Indian travel vlogger, who ran the YouTube channel "Travel with JO". In May this year, Malhotra was arrested by the police under the Official Secrets Act amid the 2025 India-Pakistan conflict. Malhotra was accused of espionage, passing sensitive information to operatives of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). It was learned during investigations that she used to take travel photographs and videos and smuggle those to Pakistan. The Kolkata Police is now investigating to find out whether Shanta Paul also operated similarly to that of Malhotra. Last Monday, the officers from Park Street police station arrested Paul from a flat in Kolkata's Golf Green area in south Kolkata. The police became suspicious after seeing the documents she had provided while applying for a passport. During the arrest, several Bangladeshi documents were recovered from Paul's Golf Green flat. It is learnt that Paul, a model by profession, entered India with a valid visa. However, instead of going back before the expiry of her visa, she managed to fake Indian documents like the AADHAAR card and Voters' ID card for herself during that interim period. After managing those fake identity documents, she started not only staying in Kolkata permanently but also earning substantial amounts through modelling and acting assignments, city police officials probing the case, said. Police have learnt that she had acted in supporting roles in some Bengali and Tamil movies during the last couple of years. She even purchased a property in the southern outskirts of Kolkata, which was jointly owned by her and her live-in partner, a resident of Andhra Pradesh and a Merchant Navy official by profession. Police are now investigating whether Paul, using her presence in the glamour world, had developed any influential connection within West Bengal as well as in other states, by which she was able to operate openly in the glamour and acting world without causing doubts in the minds of anyone. It is learnt that even in Bangladesh, she was quite successful as a model and also had won some awards there. She had earlier worked as a staff member of the Bangladesh-based Regent Airways.

After the arrest of Bangladeshi model-turned-actress Shanta Pal in Kolkata, a startling revelation has emerged — she allegedly entered into a 'digital marriage' with an Indian man using forged documents. Shanta Pal was arrested in the Bikramgarh area in south Kolkata in connection with a cheating case. But once in India, she allegedly used the services of a local agent to fabricate a new identity. Pal was arrested earlier this week, with fake Indian documents like an Aadhaar card and a ration card. The probe also revealed that the woman, along with her husband, rented an apartment in Park Street and later moved to Golf Green, where they began living together. She later entered the entertainment industry and was featured in several Tamil and Bengali films. She reportedly signed an Odia film recently. Bangladeshi actor Shanta Paul arrested in Kolkata for possessing fake Aadhaar, voter ID
A Bangladeshi woman was arrested recently in Kolkata by the West Bengal Police for allegedly possessing fake Indian identity documents such as Aadhaar and voter ID cards. The woman was identified as 28-year-old Shanta Paul. She was arrested by the Lalbazar Detective Department officials in Kolkata. She had been living at a rented flat in Bijoygarh, Jadavpur, since 2023. According to police, Shanta had entered India using a valid passport. She was working as a crew member of a Bangladeshi airline Regent Airways and was also a small-time model and actress. "Initial probe revealed that the woman was trying to travel to several foreign countries but could not manage to do so from Bangladesh. So, she chose to come to India and travel to foreign countries using Indian documents. She took calculated steps for the purpose. She rented a room in (central Kolkata's posh) Park Street and used that address to get a ration card with the help of an agent," the police officer told PTI. From there, she shifted to a rented flat in the southern part of the city's Bikramgarh area and from there got in touch with another man and managed to secure fake Aadhaar card and voter ID card, the officer said. "She then applied for an Indian passport using all these fake documents. During verification, the woman was called by the officers of the Golf Green Police Station and at that time, she failed to produce her birth certificate and also could not give proper answers regarding her family members," he said. Suspecting something "fishy", a complaint was filed at the Park Street Police Station by the Kolkata Police's Anti Rowdy Section. Eventually, a raid was conducted by the police at her flat where they found several documents including Bangladeshi passport issued in her name, an employee ID of Regent Airways, an admit card of Dhaka's education board. During the raid several Indian identity documents including Aadhaar cards, voter IDs, and ration cards were also seized. The police were also trying to find out which documents she had used to get the accommodation in Park Street. Paul was remanded to police custody till August 8 by a court. Her husband, a native of Andhra Pradesh, and her parents, who were staying with her in the rented flat, are also under investigation.
