We want to keep good ties with the US, says minister

The Star27-04-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia seeks to maintain good ties with the United States, says Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan.
'Malaysia has always been a good economic partner to the United States. That's why it has always been among Malaysia's largest foreign investors.
'We provide an environment where US companies are able to prosper. Intel has been in Malaysia since 1971.
'Other companies have been in Malaysia even longer, some since independence,' the minister said at the Asean Leadership Forum.
'So, what we want is the ability for us to continue with this positive relationship – to create a mechanism where both parties will gain opportunities to prosper within the space, compete within the space to grow and integrate what they have within Malaysia with their global supply chain. That's a great outcome,' he said.
Amir Hamzah said he believed that a mutual understanding was achievable, as both countries had consistently approached the partnership with mutual respect. He emphasised making the cake bigger, rather than getting caught up in arguments over how to divide the cake into little pieces.
On Malaysia's approach regarding the 24% reciprocal tariffs, Amir Hamzah said Malaysia had already started discussions with the United States.
'The good thing is, we have had our first conversation, and the conversation was received well enough. Next is a number of steps that will have to come after that,' he said.
However, he noted a bilateral arrangement would take time.
'To lock up trade agreements takes a while – to work through the technicalities – but it starts with a first conversation and first principles, and then continued dialogue to close the gaps,' he added.
Malaysia has expressed its openness to negotiate on four key areas – reducing the trade deficit; addressing non-tariff barriers; strengthening technological safeguards and security; and exploring a potential bilateral trade agreement.

Exclusive-Three Intel senior executives to retire amid manufacturing shake up

Intel Motherboard can be seen on display at Computex in Taipei, Taiwan June 5, 2024. REUTERS/Ann Wang/File Photo SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -Three senior executives in Intel's manufacturing operations are set to retire, Intel told Reuters on Thursday, as new CEO Lip-Bu Tan implements sweeping change to resuscitate the struggling U.S. chipmaker. Intel told staff on Tuesday that corporate vice presidents in the technology development group, Kaizad Mistry and Ryan Russell, would retire, as would Gary Patton, corporate vice president at its Design Technology Platform organization and a former IBM executive. Intel also discussed changes to the technology development group, which is responsible for creating manufacturing processes, said two people briefed on the matter. The chipmaker plans to reduce its manufacturing capacity planning team and cut a portion of its engineering team, the people said. Intel declined to comment on the changes. Manufacturing operations are led by former Micron Technology executive Naga Chandrasekaran, who was hired about a year ago by then-CEO Pat Gelsinger. Chandrasekaran's responsibility expanded in March as he took over technology development and manufacturing. He has since reorganized staff under him, including layoffs as part of global cutbacks. When Intel announced its quarterly financial results last week, CEO Tan, who assumed the role in March, set a goal of slashing the chipmaker's workforce to 75,000 people by year-end, a reduction of around 22%. Intel also vowed to take a more disciplined approach to manufacturing investment. Intel said its next-generation 14A manufacturing process depends on securing a new, significant customer, otherwise it could suspend or terminate development. "We're developing Intel 14A ... from the ground up in close partnership with large external customers," Tan said in a memo released with the financial results. "Going forward, our investment in Intel 14A will be based on confirmed customer commitments." Tan also told investors that Intel's 18A process could only generate a reasonable return if it is used for in-house products. Tan has debated whether to stop offering 18A technology to external customers to focus on 14A, Reuters reported in July. Intel plans to ramp to high-volume manufacturing its Panther Lake PC chips this year using its 18A manufacturing process. (Reporting by Max A. Malaysia's 13MP to boost high-value growth, sustain trade surplus

KUALA LUMPUR: The government expects Malaysia's trade surplus to remain robust under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), driven by high-value industries and economic diversification, said Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan. He noted that while imports will stay high to meet development needs, Malaysia's long-standing trade surplus and current account surplus position the economy for stability. 'The trade balance is always in our favour. By developing new industries and investing in high-value sectors, we can increase output and sustain our surplus,' he said after appearing on Bernama TV's 'Ruang Bicara' programme. Amir Hamzah stressed that 13MP aims to enhance competitiveness through structural shifts into AI, digitalisation, and green technology. 'If we stagnate, others will overtake us. Economic complexity will create high-skilled jobs, raise wages, and maintain our edge,' he added. On trade policy, he advocated pragmatism, urging a move away from outdated strategies. 'We must adapt. Past reliance on foreign labour for low-cost production is no longer viable. By upskilling locals and adopting technology, we can reduce dependency on foreign workers,' he explained. Despite global uncertainties, Malaysia's outlook remains positive, with the IMF revising GDP growth forecasts to 4.5%. 'This reflects confidence in our direction,' he said, highlighting 13MP's monitoring mechanisms to ensure effective execution. Projections show Malaysia's trade surplus hitting RM116.3 billion by 2030, with exports growing at 5.8% annually from 2026. - Bernama

Registration not required to collect RM100 aid

Special interview with Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan at Ministry of Finance Putrajaya yesterday. — IZZRAFIQ ALIAS/The Star NO registration is required for Malaysians to collect the RM100 additional aid as the money is automatically given to all Malaysian adults with a MyKad, says Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan (pic). 'MyKad data from the National Registration Department (JPN) will be used for this purpose,' he said during Minister's Question Time. Amir advised Malaysians not to be fooled by scammers or fraudsters over the RM100 aid. He clarified that the RM100 aid is per individual, not per household. 'For example, a family with two parents and three children over 18 will receive RM500 in total.' Amir said the RM100 can be spent at more than 4,500 registered retail outlets involving 90,000 daily necessities in 14 categories, such as eggs, rice and medicine. He added that the list of participating businesses is growing since the Prime Minister's announcement on July 23, and encouraged supermarkets and grocery stores to register their interest with MyKasih. The RM100 aid is part of several SARA programme initiatives, which includes a postponement of toll hikes for 10 highways and a RON95 fuel price reduction to RM1.99 per litre.
