The announcement was made during the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development 2025, held at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York City. The HLPF is organised by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs and serves as the UN's central platform for reviewing progress on SDGs. Abdulla Nasser Lootah, Assistant Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Competitiveness and Knowledge Exchange and Chair of the National Committee on SDGs, welcomed high-level attendees to the launch event. Dignitaries present included: Savanna Maziya, Minister of ICT, Kingdom of Eswatini Victor Verdon, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paraguay Seema Sami Iskander Bahouth, Executive Director, UN Women Eliot Minchenberg, Director, UNESCO Office for Communication in New York Benjiran Herani Tajuddin, Permanent Representative of Brunei Darussalam to the UN Tsvai Yelma Sabo, Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the UN Ambassador Mohamed Abushahab, UAE Permanent Representative to the UN, delivered the opening speech. The report, created by the National Committee on SDGs 2025, is based on the outcomes of the ministerial session held at the World Government Summit (WGS) 2025. It also includes insights from the 2045 SDG roundtable at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2025 and the UAE-led 2045 SDG Global Survey. The report is titled 'Envisioning 2045: Comprehensive Pathways towards Sustainable Development.' It outlines five key priorities: Redefining SDGs for 2045 Future-proofing societies and economies Enhancing global leadership cooperation Accelerating development transformation Establishing global commitment to future goals The UAE delegation presented survey findings from 55 countries across diverse age groups and academic fields. The results showed that 94.7% of respondents supported expanding the definition of progress beyond economic indicators. Also, 85.4% agreed that citizen involvement boosts SDG success, and 70% supported cross-sector collaboration in sustainable development. The report stresses the importance of AI, circular economies, and responsible innovation. It calls for embedding foresight in policy and involving youth, women, and vulnerable groups in shaping future goals. The report also reflects on the SDGs in Action initiative, launched in 2016 at WGS in Dubai, as a vital platform for advancing global dialogue. At the HLPF, the UAE reaffirmed its commitment to five focus SDGs for 2025: SDG3 (health), SDG5 (gender equality), SDG8 (economic growth), SDG14 (life below water), and SDG17 (partnerships). These efforts revolve around innovation, partnerships, and strategic insight. Abdulla Nasser Lootah described the report as a critical milestone in global sustainable development. He said it builds on evidence and practical solutions and seeks to define a forward-looking SDG framework. He stated, 'This report reflects the UAE's approach – anticipating challenges, strengthening global partnerships, and designing innovative solutions grounded in research, data, and evidence.' Lootah revealed that although official UN discussions on post-2030 goals will begin in 2027, the UAE started engaging international leaders in 2023. He highlighted that over 170 global leaders have participated in shaping the 2045 vision through platforms like the SDGs in Action Forum. The report stands as a strategic contribution to the global development agenda, reinforcing the UAE's leadership in promoting innovation, foresight, and inclusive progress toward 2045.

17 July 2025 18:19 THIMPHU (WAM)In a milestone effort to explore the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) for inclusive development, the United Arab Emirates and the Royal Government of Bhutan, in collaboration with the Eurasia Group and G42, convened a high-level two-day workshop titled 'AI for Development' in Thimphu, Tobgay, Prime Minister of Bhutan, and Lyonpo D.N. Dhungyel, Foreign Minister of Bhutan, were present at the workshop, which began with the traditional Marchang Ceremony, reflecting the deep essence of Bhutan's rich workshop brought together policymakers, technical experts, and development practitioners to identify creative AI solutions for local implementation. This initiative stems from a broader UAE foreign policy agenda that embraces technological diplomacy and supports inclusive, high-impact partnerships—particularly across the Global Sharaf, Assistant Minister for Advanced Science and Technology, who led the UAE delegation, remarked, 'This initiative underscores the UAE's commitment to technological diplomacy through harnessing AI and technology for global development. Bhutan's agility and forward-looking digital transformation, together with the UAE's technical expertise and strategic vision, create a natural synergy. The 'AI for Development' workshop presents a timely opportunity to explore, through strategic dialogue and knowledge exchange between Bhutan and the UAE, how AI can accelerate Bhutan's socio-economic transformation in ways that align with our national values and priorities. Economic Commission for Africa (ECA)'s Gatete sets tone at High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) 2025 with focus on finance and data gaps
At the opening of the 2025 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), Claver Gatete, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), called for urgent action to bridge global financing gaps and support innovation systems that work for all. 'Digital tools and mission-driven science can accelerate SDGs delivery, but only if systems are inclusive and backed by real financing at scale,' he said, moderating a high-level Townhall session on SDGs implementation as part of ECA's coordinating role among the UN Regional Commissions. The session, titled Unlocking the Means of Implementation: Finance, Science, Technology and Innovation for the SDGs, focused on how to move from global commitments to tangible solutions. It brought together leaders from public and private sectors to examine how capital flows, technology, and policy can better support sustainable development. With participation from Sanda Ojiambo, Executive Director of the UN Global Compact; Robbert Dijkgraaf, President-Elect of the International Science Council; and Robert Kirkpatrick, Chairman of the Board of the United Cities Foundation, the conversation highlighted the urgency of scaling investment, adopting alternative financing models, and building inclusive systems. Together, the panel stressed the importance of translating innovation into real-world results, especially across Africa and other regions facing deep development disparities. Speaking at another session on poverty eradication, Mr Gatete highlighted the need to ground policy and investment in sharper, more integrated data systems. 'We can't end poverty if we can't measure it accurately,' he said at the event hosted by the Permanent Mission of Uruguay to the UN, UNDP, the Multidimensional Poverty Peer Network (MPPN), and other partners. 'It's time to shift from measuring what's convenient to measuring what matters.' Mr Gatete pointed to ECA's development of a prototype Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) dashboard for African countries. The platform links spatial poverty data with climate vulnerability, migration flows, peace and security trends, and subnational budget execution, providing governments with a more complete picture of where to direct resources and improve social protection. As the forum continues, Mr Gatete and ECA are keeping Africa's priorities on the table, advocating for fairer finance, smarter tools, and a more inclusive path to 2030.
