Calls grow to save Agatha Christie's historic home in Iraq

In the heart of Baghdad, on the banks of the Tigris River, lies a historic house once inhabited by famed British crime writer Agatha Christie. Now, decades after Christie's residence there, the building stands in a state of disrepair and faces the threat of collapse, according to reports from Anadolu Agency. Located in the Karradat Maryam neighborhood, the house bears warnings of structural danger, yet it remains a silent witness to Baghdad's rich cultural history and Christie's enduring connection to the city. Iraqi historian Adil Ardavi shared insights into Christie's life in Iraq, stating, 'Agatha Christie lived in Iraq for nearly 13 years. Many artifacts uncovered by her husband, a specialist in historical antiquities, are now preserved in museums. Christie was an ambitious woman who traveled extensively across Iraq and neighboring countries.' Ardavi noted that Christie chose this riverside home, which reflects the traditional architectural style of old Baghdad. He believes the view of the Tigris from her home inspired some of her writing. Interestingly, the house was reportedly once the residence of Ali, brother to King Faisal I of Iraq, before Christie's time. Christie's deep ties to Baghdad are reflected in her works, including her famous novel Murder on the Orient Express, which is set partly in the city. Ardavi explained, 'At that time, Baghdad had a train line connecting people to Turkey and Europe. Having lived in Baghdad for so long, Christie developed a profound affection for the Iraqi people and became a friend of Iraq.' Despite the home's cultural significance, it currently stands neglected. Ardavi expressed hope that cooperation between the British Embassy in Baghdad and Iraqi authorities could help restore the property and convert it into a museum honoring Christie's legacy. Local bookseller Hamza Abu Sali, who works on Baghdad's famed Mutanabbi Street, known as the hub for secondhand books, remarked on Christie's enduring popularity. 'Iraqis have a strong interest in her novels,' he said. 'Her books are always among the most sought after.'

Dua Lipa granted Kosovo citizenship

International pop star Dua Lipa has expressed a profound sense of wholeness after receiving citizenship of Kosovo, the homeland of her parents. Born in London to Kosovan-Albanian parents, Lipa briefly lived in Pristina as a child when her family returned following Kosovo's declaration of independence. The naturalization ceremony was hosted by Kosovo's President Vjosa Osmani, who described granting citizenship to Lipa as an 'honour,' praising her as 'one of the most iconic cultural figures in our country's history.' In her statement, Lipa said, 'It completes the duality I have always had within. I love this country and this means so much to me and my family.' Sharing photos from the ceremony on X, President Osmani wrote, 'Dua and Kosovo have always been inseparable. From the world's biggest stages to the hearts of millions, she's carried our story with strength, pride, and grace… Our gratitude is endless for everything Dua has done, and continues to do for Kosovo.' In a separate post, she added, 'Kosovo's gem — welcome back home.' Welcome back home, Dua! Today, by presidential decree, I had the honor of granting the citizenship of the Republic of Kosovo to one of the most iconic cultural figures in our country's history, @DUALIPA. Dua and Kosovo have always been inseparable. From the world's biggest… — Vjosa Osmani (@VjosaOsmaniPRKS) July 31, 2025 Lipa is currently in Kosovo, headlining the three-day Sunny Hill Festival in Pristina, an event she co-founded with her father in 2018 to shift perceptions of Kosovo away from its conflict-ridden past. At the ceremony, a children's choir performed a rendition of her hit 'Levitating,' celebrating her deep connection to the country. Also attending was UK Ambassador to Kosovo Jonathan Hargreaves, who posted a photo with Lipa, saying the UK and Kosovo were proud to call her 'one of our own.' This new citizenship adds to Lipa's British and Albanian passports. She was granted Albanian citizenship in 2022 in recognition of her efforts to promote Albania globally. That same year, Kosovo named her an Honorary Ambassador, a role she called 'an honour and a privilege' to represent her heritage worldwide. After performing at Sunny Hill Festival on Friday, Lipa shared on Instagram, 'Sharing this night with you all, in the city that shaped me, surrounded by so much energy, joy, and pride… it's hard to put into words what it means.'
