During the first innings of the India-England Test played at Old Trafford in Manchester in 1990, Azhar scored 179 runs as India captain in the first innings. But on Thursday, during India's first innings of the ongoing second Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham, Gill has scored 180 runs, and he is still unbeaten.
Gill crossed the 179-run mark by taking a single on the 298th ball of his innings.

Gill, who has proved to be India's best batter in the ongoing series, would like to add at least 20 more runs to his tally on Thursday and become the first Indian captain to score a double century in Test matches played in SENA countries.
Only Virat Kohli has scored a double century for India as captain away from home. Kohli, who announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 7, 2025, scored 200 runs for India against the West Indies at North Sound in July 2016.
Gill made his Test captaincy debut for India in Leeds on June 20, 2025, against England and scored 147 runs in the first innings. He is the fourth Indian captain after Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, and Virat Kohli to score centuries in his first two Tests and the third Indian captain after Hazare and Mohammad Azharuddin to score back-to-back Test centuries against England.
