A feature on the IIT Madras student-led innovation lab highlighted cutting-edge solutions emerging from India's youth, the statement highlighted.

Morocco, Ecuador Reiterate Willingness to Further Bolster Bilateral Ties
The Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Ecuador reiterated on Friday in Rabat their mutual willingness to further strengthen the development of their bilateral relations. Following the meeting held between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita, and the Ecuadorian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility, Mrs. Gabriela Sommerfeld, both parties underscored the outstanding bilateral ties of friendship and solidarity, and agreed on the importance of sustaining these exchanges and regularly reviewing them to further strengthen cooperation. The ministers stressed that International Law is fundamentally based on mutual respect for the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence of States, as well as on fulfilling obligations under treaties and other sources of international law. Bourita and Sommerfeld said they were pleased with the convergence of their views on regional and international issues and reiterated their commitment to working for global peace and security. They agreed to pool efforts to address global challenges within various international and multilateral bodies, such as climate change, gender issues, human rights, the blue and green agendas, food security, health, pandemic prevention and response, and combating insecurity and corruption. The two sides also tackled the significance of implementing the SDGs in an integrated and holistic manner to eradicate poverty and fight climate change while promoting sustainable land use and water management. During their meeting, the two ministers also exchanged views on regional and international issues, including the situations in Africa and Latin America, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. They reaffirmed the importance of people-to-people exchanges in strengthening mutual understanding, friendship, and cooperation in communication, culture, education, sports, arts, youth, civil society, and the economy. They also expressed their strong commitment to boosting investments through fluid commercial information exchange, promoting strategic alliances with the private sector, and actively supporting initiatives that facilitate and expand bilateral trade, in order to multiply business opportunities and explore the potential for diversified trade and investment between the two countries. The two parties explored collaborative prospects within various Atlantic cooperation initiatives. They also voiced their aspiration to make this space a geostrategic framework for dialogue, aimed at promoting development and ensuring security and solidarity, as well as bringing together the peoples of the Global South and North. Regarding migration, Morocco and Ecuador commended the efforts made in the area, especially within the framework of the Marrakesh Pact, the Rabat Process, and the Los Angeles Declaration, and reaffirmed their shared commitment to dynamic mobility that enables a safe, smooth, and orderly movement of people. The two officials also expressed their shared will to further strengthen the bilateral legal framework to address common areas of interest in cooperation. To this end, the ministers welcomed the signing of two legal instruments: a Memorandum of Understanding on diplomatic training and exchange of experiences between Morocco's Institute of Training, Research, and Diplomatic Studies (IMFRED) and the "Galo Plaza Lasso" Diplomatic Academy of the Ecuadorian Foreign Affairs Ministry; and a Memorandum of Understanding establishing a mechanism for bilateral political consultations. Carbon Markets Africa Summit reveals packed programme featuring continent's entire carbon markets value chain
The upcoming Carbon Markets Africa Summit (CMAS) programme features the continent's entire carbon markets value chain in what is a compelling combination of successful early carbon market movers, climate-finance-ready projects, regulatory bodies as well as global institutional development organisations and investors. The event is taking place in Johannesburg from 22 to 23 October, with pre-conference sessions on 21 October. CMAS is dedicated to unlocking Africa's carbon market potential, incorporating integrity, investment and impact. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) are official supporters of the event. Shifting global landscape Day 1's opening session will focus on the continent's pivotal opportunity to define its own carbon trajectory, attract meaningful investment and align carbon market growth with the priorities of climate resilience, equity and sustainable development. Carbon market frameworks As African countries move from climate ambition to implementation, regulatory clarity is becoming the cornerstone of carbon market development. A session titled 'Turning Policy into Action,' will explore how national frameworks are evolving post-COP29, what integration of Article 6 looks like on the ground and how public-private collaboration can drive effective execution. Strong representation from across the continent and value chain bodes for an enlightening discussion, including the UNDP, Government of Nigeria, the South African Department of Fisheries, Forestry and the Environment, Zambia's Ministry of Green Economy and Environment and Uganda Climate Change Department. The challenges with regards to integrity that carbon markets have faced will be tackled head-on during CMAS. Financing Africa's carbon pipeline Day 2 of the packed CMAS programme features investor roundtables in a more intimate setting, aimed at 'Connecting Climate Capital with Scalable Carbon Solutions,' during which a select group of carbon market investors and financiers can present their funds, strategies and investment opportunities to both potential capital partners and carbon project developers. Keynote on investment Day 2's keynote session on 'Financing Africa's Carbon Pipeline: Derisking, Scaling and Innovating" will address both sides of the investment equation with participants from Shell Nature Based Solutions, Standard Bank, MIGA, AfDB and South Pole. Jonathan First, Senior Advisor at Climate Policy Initiative will also unpack the question of how to mobilise private capital for Africa's carbon markets with several financiers from TransEnergy Global, FSD Africa, the JSE and JP Morgan. Pre-conference day The CARBON 101 masterclass will provide investors, policymakers and developers with the necessary insights into the burgeoning business of carbon markets. The expert facilitators in this relatively new field will cover everything from international frameworks, African policy landscapes, credit integrity and investment fundamentals. 'Trust plays a key role' As part of CMAS 2025's mission to catalyse high-integrity, African-led carbon markets, Dominic Wilhelm, Executive Director of the Global Trust Project, will also lead a high-impact dialogue working session. 'While the current value of carbon markets as of 2023 is about $950 billion, within the next 10 years, it's going to be worth $16 trillion,' says Wilhelm. 'However, the full value chain of carbon markets is very fragmented, and it's not transparent. Therefore, the full value chain needs to rapidly come together in a high-level dialogue, in which trust plays a key role to solve some of these challenges.' Empowering local talent through storytelling The MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) continues to be a cornerstone of creative skills development in Africa. In FY25, MTF celebrated the graduation of 86 young filmmakers, bringing the total number of industry-ready graduates to 486 since inception. Working in partnership with organisations such as Zee World, Sony, Mastercard Foundation, and local government institutions, the initiative provides hands-on training, masterclasses, and critical exposure to real-world production environments. Elevating girls in sports The DStv Schools Netball Challenge proved to be one of the year's standout community initiatives. In 2024, over 2,800 high schools participated in the tournament, involving more than 28,000 schoolgirls from cluster stages to national finals. The Ubuntu Stream saw Khombindlela High School from KZN emerge victorious and later named School of the Year at the KZN Sports Awards. In the Botho Stream, Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool defended its 2023 title, showcasing the depth and consistency of talent development. Let's Play multipurpose sports fields Through the Let's Play initiative, MultiChoice has installed multipurpose sports fields at schools in underserved communities. To date, over 140,000 learners have benefited from these facilities. In FY25, over 250 teachers completed the Premier Skills Teacher Training Programme, a joint initiative with the English Premier League to build capacity in delivering effective physical education. 10 years of the DStv Diski Challenge Over the last decade, the DStv Diski Challenge has become an essential pipeline for local football talent. More than 350 players have progressed to Premiership clubs, and over 260 have represented South Africa in junior and senior national teams. In FY2025 alone: - 23 of the 46 players who helped the U17 and U20 teams qualify for the FIFA World Cups came from Diski Challenge teams. - 19 players were promoted to the premiership, including rising star Mbekezele Mbokazi of Orlando Pirates. The 10th season of the Diski Challenge demonstrated its crucial role in talent development and national team success, as both the U17 and U20 sides qualified for the AFCON, a gateway to the World Cup. Governance MultiChoice holds itself to the highest standards of corporate governance and ethical conduct, ensuring that trust remains central to its relationship with stakeholders. A key governance priority continues to be the intensification of efforts to combat piracy and illegal content retransmission, issues that threaten not only company revenues but the broader media and creative industries across Africa. Piracy is not just a legal challenge. It undermines local content creators, discourages investment, and distorts the entertainment economy. In response, MultiChoice spearheaded multi-jurisdictional collaborations through the Partners Against Piracy (PAP) initiative. In FY25 alone: - Over 155 successful anti-piracy raids conducted. - 4,351 illegal networks shut down. - 107 individuals arrested across the continent. PAP's international footprint continues to expand, with Ethiopia becoming a focal point in 2024. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between MultiChoice Africa, the Ethiopian Ministry of Culture and Sport, and the Ethiopian Intellectual Property Authority to enhance IP enforcement and preserve the country's rich cultural legacy. With increasingly sophisticated digital tools, MultiChoice is tracking and dismantling pirate operations while educating consumers about the dangers of illegal streaming. This dual approach of enforcement and awareness is vital to preserving the integrity of Africa's creative industries. Economic contribution MultiChoice's economic contribution goes well beyond direct employment. Its enterprise development initiatives, skills-building programmes, and inclusive procurement practices create ripple effects that stimulate economic activity and uplift historically disadvantaged communities. Through the MultiChoice Innovation Fund, the company has supported 79 black-owned businesses, with at least 50% black-female ownership, with over R410m in loans, grants, and business development support. This initiative has already created more than 1,000 jobs, reinforcing the company's role in nurturing the next generation of African entrepreneurs. Since its partnership with the Youth Employment Service (YES), MultiChoice has facilitated the creation of 1,980 jobs for young South Africans. These roles offer more than work experience; they provide a gateway to permanent employment and economic mobility.
