Shock pole position for Ferrari as McLaren duo come up short in Hungary
Leclerc saw off Piastri by just 0.026 seconds with Norris only 0.015 sec behind the Australian. George Russell finished fourth for Mercedes.
McLaren had dominated all weekend at the Hungaroring with Norris fastest in both sessions on Friday, and Piastri – who leads his team-mate by 16 points in the world championship – quickest in the concluding running prior to qualifying.
But Leclerc pulled a mighty lap out of the bag to secure both his and Ferrari's first pole of the season.
The Monegasque said: 'Today, I don't understand anything in Formula One. Honestly, the whole qualifying was extremely difficult. When I say extremely difficult, it's not exaggerating.
'It was difficult for us to get to Q2, it was difficult for us to get to Q3. In Q3, the conditions changed a little bit. Everything became a lot trickier, and I knew I just had to do a clean lap to target third.
'At the end of the day, it's pole position. I definitely did not expect that. Honestly, I have no words. It's probably one of the best pole positions I've ever had. It's the most unexpected, for sure.'
In the other scarlet car, Hamilton has a record eight wins and nine pole positions in Hungary. However, a week after he qualified only 16th at Spa-Francorchamps, he suffered another setback when he was knocked out of Q2.
Hamilton has now been outqualified by Leclerc at 10 of the 14 rounds so far.
'Every time, every time,' said the British driver after he was informed of his early exit.
Hamilton emerged from his cockpit and walked towards the Ferrari motorhome holding his gloves in front of his visor to obstruct the full glare of the waiting TV cameras.
Hamilton's lowly grid slot looks set to extend his run without a podium finish to 14 races. Until this season he had never gone more than 10 races into a campaign without finishing in the top three.
Hamilton's replacement at Mercedes, the teenager Kimi Antonelli, has only scored once in his last seven appearances and he too failed to make it out of Q2, qualifying 15th.
Aston Martin have been woefully out of sorts this year and are eighth in the constructors' standings. Both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll failed to make it out of Q1 at the previous round.
However, Alonso – who turned 44 earlier this week – and Stroll progressed to the final phase on Saturday, and will start fifth and sixth respectively. Four-time world champion Max Verstappen qualified eighth for Red Bull.
Alex Albon has enjoyed a strong season – he finished sixth last weekend – but he will line up from the back of the pack here after qualifying 20th and last.
Yuki Tsunoda was also eliminated in Q1 for the fifth time this season, leaving him 16th on the grid.

Andy Farrell backed to lead the Lions tour of New Zealand
Andy Farrell's credentials to remain British and Irish Lions head coach for the 2029 tour to New Zealand have been endorsed by chief executive Ben Calveley. Farrell has steered the Lions to their first series triumph since 2013 with Saturday's 22-12 defeat by the Wallabies in Sydney the only loss of their nine-fixture visit to Australia. Even if their march towards the whitewash was conclusively halted at the final hurdle, the 50-year-old Ireland boss has presided over a successful tour notable for its results, squad cohesion, commitment to playing rugby and the character shown to win the second Test in the dying seconds. Planning for 2029 is already underway with Calveley promising a similar structure and number of games to the itinerary just completed, although the final midweek fixture will be looked at closely because of the disruption it causes to Test preparations. Farrell is the favourite to lead that expedition and Calveley suggests that the most coveted post in British and Irish rugby is currently his to lose. 'Andy's done an incredible job and I have really enjoyed working with him,' Calveley said. 'I go right back to when I first met him to offer him the role. You could see right then that we had made the right decision in appointing Andy. 'Since he has started full time back in December, he has brought a real focus to the operation which has ultimately resulted in success on the field of play. We will now give him a bit of time off. 'When it comes to our appointments for future tours, we will start the process in about two years and I don't think it would be right to comment on where it ends up. But certainly he has put himself in a very strong position, let's put it that way.' Australia entered the series ranked eighth in the world and their credibility as an ongoing Lions tour destination was at stake before the Suncorp Stadium opener. Their thumping in Brisbane was an inauspicious start, but at Melbourne Cricket Ground they went within 51 seconds of levelling the series before emerging emphatic winners on Saturday. The Lions won the series by an aggregate score of just 68-67 and their opponents led for more time across the three Tests. Factor in profits that are 'significantly higher than anything we've seen in the past' and it is clear that the Wallabies will continue to be adversaries for the elite of British and Irish rugby. 'I would absolutely envisage returning to Australia. I know there's been loads of speculation about whether that would be the case or not, but we've had a wonderful tour here,' Calveley said. 'It's 100 per cent our ambition to return and we would want the next one to be bigger and better than this one.' The Lions are seen as potentially being vulnerable to the proposed new breakaway franchise league R360, but Calveley insists their pulling power remains as strong as ever. 'You have seen these quotes come from players at every stage throughout the tour is that they remain absolutely committed to the Lions,' he said. 'We all know that we have our place in the calendar baked into regulation 9 and I wouldn't see that changing in the future. 'Our relationship with the professional game is better than it has ever been and I would see that continuing in the future.'

Meanwhile, it was not a good start for Lewis Hamilton as he was overtaken by Carlos Sainz and Kimi Antonelli on the opening lap, leaving him in 14th and a lot of ground to make up. By lap three Norris got by Alonso's Aston Martin for fourth while Leclerc was building a lead ahead of Piastri out front. Norris was soon snapping at the heels of Russell in the battle for third, but just couldn't get past the Mercedes driver until he pitted on lap 20. Finally things got spicy when Max Verstappen went for an audacious move on his old rival Lewis Hamilton but the Ferrari driver ran wide. The pair nearly made contact but the Dutchman got ahead and snatched 11th place from the Brit. Lando Norris sprayed the gravel with two wheels before he was urged to 'keep the focus' by his race engineer Will Joseph. Piastri was over eight seconds ahead of his teammate by lap 45 with Norris closing in and setting a new fastest lap time to eat into the gap between them. The Aussie was dwindling and pitted before remerging and hunting down Leclerc until he left him for dust on lap 51. Norris was the only driver ahead of him now, rolling the dice with the one-stop strategy until the end. Leclerc was left livid at his team for letting first-place fall from their clutches and fumed on the radio: "This is so incredibly frustrating. We have lost all competitiveness, you just have to listen to me. "I would have found a different way of managing those issues. "Now it's just undriveable. It's a miracle if we finish on the podium." Piastri hunted Norris on his fresh tyres with just over three-seconds separating them with 10-laps to go. Russell was left seething as Leclerc twice moved over to the right as Russell tried to dive down the inside to overtake with the two nearly making contact. Russell was fuming on the radio demanding a penalty for the Monegasque driver and the stewards investigated. Leclerc was slapped with a five-second time penalty but didn't lose any places. Fans were licking their lips at the battle between Norris and Piastri at the front, as the two McLarens lapped 12th place Hamilton who finished where he started. After his win a jubilant Norris said: "I'm dead. I'm dead. It was tough. "We weren't really planning on the one-stop but after the first lap it was kind of our only option to get back into things. "The final stint with Oscar catching I was pushing flat out. "Rewarding even more because of that. The perfect result today. "I didn't think it would get us the win, I thought it would get us maybe into second. "I knew if I had clean air and could push I could maybe make things work and that's what we did. "It always is a bit of a gamble these kind of things. It also requires no mistakes, good laps, good strategy and that's what we had today. "We're so tightly fought it's hard to say if momentum is on anyone's side. "It's tough but fun racing against Oscar.
