An elderly man's wrong turn down a famous Italian landmark led to his vehicle being craned away.
An 80-year-old man on his way to work mistakenly drove his Mercedes-Benz sedan down Rome's famous Spanish Steps in the early morning June 17, Italian media reports show.
Video captured the driver slowly navigating down the historic stairs before getting stuck as well as the audio reaction of bystanders in disbelief.
Police said the man exited the vehicle uninjured and firefighters used a crane to remove the vehicle from the steps, Italian outlet Il Corriere della Sera reported.
Public access to the Spanish Steps was temporarily restricted while experts with the Ministry of Culture examined the extent of damage caused by the driver, according to CBS News.
Upon being taken to a local hospital, the man tested negative for both alcohol and drug consumption, CNN reported citing city police.
However officers said the driver appeared to be in a state of confusion, according to Il Corriere della Sera. He reportedly had a valid driver's license.
The peculiar moment wasn't the first time a vehicle drove through the historic landmark. In 2022, a Saudi man was charged with aggravated damage to cultural heritage after footage captured a Maserati driving down the same steps.
Build between 1723 and 1726, the Spanish Steps lead from the iconic Piazza di Spagna square to the French monastery church Trinita dei Monti, according to Rome's tourist site.
The landmark features 135 total steps as well as three different terraces that reference the Holy Trinity or the Trinità. Tourists often visit the top of the stairs for a scenic view of Rome.

Seven missing after powerful explosion at California fireworks facility as evacuation orders remain in place

Hundreds of people are without power, and seven people remain missing after a violent explosion at a fireworks facility in Yolo County, California, early Tuesday evening. At least two people were injured in the explosion, which happened just before 6 p.m. local time at a facility housing commercial fireworks in Esparto. During a news conference on Wednesday, Esparto Fire Chief Curtis Lawrence confirmed firefighters initially entered the building, but were later pulled out due to "the severity and the risks that were there." Officials said they have not re-entered the building to search for the missing people, opting to use drones for aerial reconnaissance over the large debris field. Though it is unclear if the missing people were employees at the facility, no firefighters were injured in the explosion. Lawrence said officials do not know when it will be safe enough for firefighters to go back to the site. Initially, more than 30 fire apparatus responded. As of Wednesday afternoon, only a few remained. "I can say I have not seen anything like this," Lawrence said. "This is obviously an incident of great magnitude. … My next priority is going to be working with the command team to start working on trying to reduce this exclusion zone so that we can start to get our constituents back into their houses and try to get what we can reenergized in the area when it's safe." Evacuation orders remain in place for two nearby zones, and more than 150 customers do not have power. "Our agency, being here in the local in a small community, we are primarily volunteer agencies," Lawrence said. "I would be remiss if I didn't add that I'm really thankful and proud of all of our responders that stepped up yesterday, and even today, and came out here. … We appreciate all the responders and the mutual aid partners that came and assisted us." CAL FIRE confirmed the building was owned by an active pyrotechnic license holder, though the owner's identity has not yet been released. The Office of the State Fire Marshal, which is leading the investigation, sent an arson and bomb investigation team to the area, according to Gov. Gavin Newsom's office. As of Wednesday afternoon, 78.3 acres had burned with 0% containment, according to CAL FIRE. Officials have not yet released the cause of the fire.

Father drowned, child rescued near Westboro Beach

A man drowned in the Ottawa River but his son was rescued by a passerby near Westboro Beach on Wednesday afternoon, police and paramedics said. Ottawa police said emergency responders were called to Westboro Beach around 1:40 p.m. "following reports that a father and child had gone underwater." According to police, a "quick-thinking member of the public was able to rescue the child." Ottawa paramedics transported the child to CHEO "as a precaution," police said in a news release. Paramedics said they also transported the 27-year-old rescuer to hospital in stable condition. "He got the eight-year-old boy out of the water," paramedic Paul Morneau said. Ottawa firefighters and members of the Ottawa police marine, dive and trails unit later located the father, but despite extensive resuscitation efforts he was pronounced dead at hospital, police said. "We also extend our gratitude to all those who responded to this emergency with professionalism and care," Ottawa police said. It's unclear where the man and child entered the water, Morneau added.

2026 Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 S Final Edition Signals the End of the Line

The 2026 Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 S Final Edition will be available in the United States in limited numbers. The 2026 Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 S currently starts at $68,200, without the Final Edition package. This high-output sedan will arrive at dealerships early in 2026. Mercedes-Benz announced earlier this year that the brand will launch a next-generation CLA-Class sedan for 2026 with a battery-electric powertrain. Sending off the second-gen CLA-Class, Mercedes-AMG is rolling out a limited-production CLA 45 S Final Edition. It will come finished exclusively in mountain grey magno, sport black and yellow graphics, and ride on a set of 19-inch AMG wheels. Powering the CLA 45 S Final Edition is the same 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that feeds every other current-generation CLA 45 S. That means this sedan shoves 416 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and into a 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. Mercedes-AMG says this CLA 45 S is electronically limited at 155 mph but can sprint to 60 mph from a standing start in just four seconds flat. Separating this Final Edition from the rest of the pack is that it's only available in the mountain grey magno finish. Joining this matte grey paint job is a set of not-so-subtle black and yellow graphics on the doors and mirror caps. The black and yellow motif also extends to the cabin, which sports AMG Performance seats that are finished in black MB-Tex and microfiber. That black fabric is offset by no shortage of yellow accents and logos, and yellow stitching also finds its way to the AMG Performance wheel that accents the leather and microfiber covering. Mercedes hasn't mentioned pricing for the upcoming CLA 45 S Final Edition, but the company did say it will start showing up at dealers early in 2026. Considering that the standard CLA 45 S starts at $68,200, this limited-production send-off will probably start somewhere in the $70,000 range. Do you think this is a fitting farewell to the second-gen CLA-Class? Tell us your thoughts below.
