ROME: Malaysia and Italy are set to deepen defence cooperation, with new agreements on procurement, training, and technology sharing discussed during Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's official visit to the country.
Anwar said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, in detailed discussions with his Italian counterpart Guido Crosetto, had addressed the ongoing acquisition of maritime patrol aircraft and helicopters from Italian defence contractor Leonardo.
The talks also covered areas such as maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), training, and technology transfer.
"They also discussed the centralisation of training and initial flight operations at Batu Berendam Airport," Anwar said, adding that the coordination of these efforts would also involve Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
Khaled said both governments agreed that any potential procurement involving Italy should be undertaken via a government-to-government approach.
"In this way, pricing will be more favourable, and there will be a guarantee on any assets purchased, as they will be backed by government assurance," he said.
He added that with Italy's growing interest in the Indo-Pacific region, numerous training exercises and operations are expected to take place, necessitating a joint logistics agreement to address bureaucratic challenges and ensure the smooth support of Italian assets.
Khaled also highlighted Italy's advancements in emerging domains such as cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, as well as its experience in protecting underwater infrastructure in the Baltic region.
"At Asean defence ministers' meetings, we have raised the issue of securing underwater energy grids that connect Asean countries.
"Therefore, we have requested that Italy share its expertise in this area, from which both Asean and Malaysia can benefit," he said.

Arkema to invest RM350mil in Terengganu, Johor and Negri Sembilan, says PM

PARIS: Arkema, a French manufacturer of specialty materials, has pledged to invest RM350mil across three projects in Terengganu, Johor, and Negri Sembilan from 2025 to 2028, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says. Among Arkema's investments, a project will involve the expansion of thiochemicals capacity (light and heavy mercaptans) in its plant in Kerteh, Terengganu. For Arkema's plant in Pasir Gudang, Johor, Anwar said it will involve creating new lines for bio-based rheology additives and expansion of solution acrylic resins. Anwar also said Arkema's investment in Seremban, Negri Sembilan, will transform its plant there into an Asia Pacific sealing and bonding hub, with a regional research and development and training centre under Bostik. 'The expansion will create approximately 70 high-skilled jobs, supporting local innovation, regional exports and downstream value chain development,' said Anwar after a meeting with Arkema's leadership. Anwar said Arkema's projects reinforce Malaysia's position in the global advanced materials supply chain, adding that it aligns with the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030) and the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR). 'The company's diversification into bio-based products, green chemistry, and specialty additives supports Malaysia's ambitions in low-carbon manufacturing and sustainable industrialisation,' he said. Anwar also said Malaysia welcomes Arkema's continued confidence in Malaysia as a regional manufacturing and innovation hub. 'We are committed to facilitating Arkema's ongoing expansion and growth here - Malaysia remains a committed partner for Arkema's long-term growth in Asia,' added Anwar. Arkema operates in over 55 countries with 157 production plants and 21,150 employees worldwide. In Malaysia, Arkema's presence spans three key locations - Kerteh (Terengganu), Pasir Gudang (Johor), and Seremban (Negeri Sembilan) - focusing on thiochemicals, coating resins, and adhesives respectively. Anwar will conclude his trip to Paris on Friday July 4 and head to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the 17th BRICS Summit from July 6 to 7 at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Ringgit rebounds slightly as market anticipates mild US tariffs

KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 — The ringgit ended marginally higher against the US dollar yesterday, buoyed by growing expectations of a possible compromise on upcoming US tariff measures. At 6pm, the local note appreciated to 4.2180/2260 against the greenback from Wednesday's close of 4.2195/2255. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the modest rebound was partly driven by optimism that Washington may settle on a softer set of tariffs as it nears the finalisation of tariffs for selected countries. 'There is speculation that the finalised tariffs could be less severe than the initial proposals announced in early April, which has helped ease some market concerns. 'The ringgit was weaker earlier in the session, slipping to 4.2383, but later recovered to as high as 4.2175 during yesterday's session,' he told Bernama. Nonetheless, Mohd Afzanizam noted that overall sentiment remained cautious, with investors staying on the sidelines as they await greater clarity on trade policy directions and their broader implications. At the close, the ringgit traded higher against a basket of major currencies. It rose against the euro to 4.9675/9770 from 4.9756/9827, appreciated against the Japanese yen to 2.9225/9282 from 2.9333/9376, and advanced versus the British pound to 5.7601/7710 from 5.7621/7703 yesterday. The local note traded mixed against its Asean counterparts. It improved vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.3114/3182 from 3.3146/3196, and rose against the Philippine peso to 7.47/7.49 from 7.50/7.51. However, it slipped against the Thai baht to 13.0302/0609 from 13.0211/0457, and shed against the Indonesian rupiah to 260.6/261.2 from 260.5/261.0 previously. — Bernama

French multinational Imerys to invest RM1.68bil, expected to create up to 120 jobs, says PM

PARIS: French multinational company Imerys has pledged to invest approximately RM1.68bil to establish a carbon black production facility for use in lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles in Malaysia, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. According to the Prime Minister, this will be Imerys' second such plant globally after Belgium and it is expected to create 100 to 120 skilled jobs. 'It is under site consideration at the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex (PPIC) Johor or the Gebeng Industrial Park in Pahang. 'It targets the Asia-Pacific Market, contributing to regional EV battery manufacturing and conductive polymer applications,' said Anwar in his speaking notes during a one-on-one meeting with Imerys in Paris, France on July 4 (Friday). Anwar said Imerys' carbon black project aligns with Malaysia's goals under the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030). 'It will boost Malaysia's positioning in the battery materials supply chain and support downstream localisation and innovation. 'This project also complements the broadened EV and renewable energy agenda, with strong potential for industrial linkage and technology transfer,' said Anwar. Anwar said Malaysia welcomes Imerys confidence in Malaysia as a strategic destination in Asia, and the proposed carbon black project will significantly contribute to the development of Malaysia's battery and EV ecosystem. 'We are committed to supporting this investment through streamlined facilitation and industrial development enablers, aligned with our NIMP 2030 and NETR. 'The partnership with PETRONAS for feedstock, and consideration for strategic locations such as PIPC Johor and Gebeng, Pahang, reinforces our push towards value-added industrialisation,' said Anwar. Imerys has operations in 33 countries and it supplies functional additives, mineral components and process enablers for industries including plastic, energy, construction and electronics. In Malaysia, Imerys Minerals Malaysia Sdn Bhd operates a calcium carbonate mine in Ipoh, which is its largest Southeast Asian site.
