Pregnant dog was ‘left to suffer in silence' —so shelter went to war with her owners
'Last September, Dabby was found running scared and confused through the streets of Northumberland County,' the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) said in March 28 Facebook post.
'Alone and in pain, she was rushed to a local rescue, where the heartbreaking truth of her condition became clear: a traumatic eye injury had left her eye damaged, and it was obvious she was in pain.'
Unfortunately, that wasn't the extent of Dabby's suffering.
'When her owners came forward to claim her, we learned something even more gut-wrenching: Dabby had been repeatedly bred, and she was pregnant again, carrying yet another litter of puppies. There was no proof that her injured eye had ever received proper care. She had been left to suffer in silence,' the shelter said.
The shelter along with its Animal Law Enforcement team weren't about to let those responsible for Dabby's 'care' get away with the abuse.
'Our Animal Law Enforcement team immediately stepped in, executing a search warrant at the home where Dabby was being kept. We rescued her and the tiny lives she was carrying. But the battle wasn't over,' the shelter said. 'Dabby's owners refused to surrender her, she would remain in our care as we fought for justice.'
During the battle, Dabby was able to deliver her babies under the watchful eye of the shelter.
'During this time, Dabby gave birth to six puppies in one of our offices, where a whelping box was set up and she was closely monitored on a nanny cam,' the shelter said.
'Despite everything she had been through, she was an incredible mother. Her puppies would never have to know the same suffering she endured. A shelter was no place for Dabby and her babies. Thankfully, a kind-hearted foster stepped up, offering them the loving home they so desperately needed.'
As of last week, all of Dabby's puppies — who were named after pizza toppings and appear to be French bulldog and pug mix — have been adopted, the shelter told McClatchy News. Dabby is the last of the rescued pups.
'Just one week ago, after a long fight, Dabby and her puppies were officially awarded to us through a cost-of-care petition. But while the legal battle is ongoing, Dabby's journey is far from over,' the shelter said.
'Due to her eye and repeated breeding, Dabby requires specialized surgery, one that comes with significant risk, and will need around-the-clock care to ensure her safety and recovery.'
According to the shelter, this is the last hurdle Dabby has to go through before she's able to go up for adoption.

4 missing on trip to ‘America's Taj Mahal' found dead in WV mountains, cops say
Four New York residents who went missing while on a road trip to a famous Hindu temple have been found dead in the West Virginia mountains, officials told news outlets. The group of four — identified as Kishore Divan, Asha Divan, Shailesh Divan and Gita Divan — died in an apparent crash, and they and their vehicle were found Saturday, Aug. 2, at 9:30 p.m., the Marshall County Sheriff's Office said in a news release. Authorities have not said what may have led to the crash, but the vehicle was located 'off a steep embankment along Big Wheeling Creek Road' in northern West Virginia. According to the sheriff's office, a family member called and reported that the group left from Buffalo earlier in the week and was heading to Prabhupada's Palace of Gold, but days passed and they never arrived, WIVB reported. A motorist driving along Big Wheeling Creek Road noticed damage to a road sign and vehicle debris, which led deputies to the crash location, the station reported. The group ranged in age from 81 to 89, according to the station. Big Wheeling Creek Road is about 5 miles away from Prabhupada's Palace of Gold. The palace, sometimes referred to as 'America's Taj Mahal,' was constructed in the late 1970s, on top of what was once a garbage dump, by followers of the Hare Krishna movement, according to the Smithsonian. It is a shrine inside the community of New Vrindaban, in honor of Hare Krishna's founder, who died before construction was completed. Investigators say there were signals from cell phones belonging to the group in the nearby areas of Moundsville and Wheeling on Wednesday, July 30, but they had not answered their phones since the previous day, WTRF reported. The 'Divan family is a pillar of Indian Community of (Western New York),' the Hindu Cultural Society of Western New York said in an Aug. 3 Facebook post. 'It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing away of Dr. Kishore Divan, Mrs. Asha Divan, Mr. Shailesh Divan and Mrs. Gita Divan,' the post read. 'Dr. Divan's contributions to our community has been long and sustained. He was the founding member of Hindu Cultural Society of WNY and the India Association of Buffalo. The government said Sunday that anyone convicted of creating online materials intended to break UK immigration law will face prison time and a large fine. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said the aim was to stop the 'brazen tactics on social media' used by smuggling gangs. 'Selling the false promise of a safe journey to the UK and a life in this country — whether on or offline — simply to make money, is nothing short of immoral,' she said. Assisting illegal immigration to the UK is already a crime, but officials believe a new offense — part of a border security bill currently going through Parliament — will give police and prosecutors more powers to disrupt gangs that send migrants on perilous journeys across one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said the crime gangs are a threat to global security and should be treated like terror networks. Since taking office a year ago, Starmer's centre-left Labour Party government has adopted powers to seize the assets of people-smugglers, beefed up UK border surveillance and increased law-enforcement cooperation with France and other countries to disrupt the journeys.
