When it comes to gorgeous beaches, Landaa Giraavaru is right up there, one of only 5 percent of the world's beaches composed of coraline sand.

Rare sand
The beaches that make up this island paradise are part of the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, a biodiversity hot spot. This atoll, a ring-shaped reef that surrounds a lagoon, harbors 250 species of corals and 1,200 species of fish.

As for that shimmering, pearlescent sand? It's made of coral. Only 5 percent of the world's beaches are coraline; most are made of quartz. Coraline sand consists mostly of calcium carbonate, the mineral that forms the skeletons of corals, clams, and other marine organisms. When those animals die, waves and currents break them apart and grind them into sand. Parrotfish also deserve some credit. They eat mature coral and excrete calcium carbonate, which looks like snowflakes in the water. Parrotfish excrete so much sediment that they create beaches. So, yes, fish poop helped create these famously spectacular stretches of beach.
The downside? With no direct flights from the United States, travel to the Maldives is a haul. The 1,192 islands of this republic are located in the Indian Ocean. From Boston, you fly into Doha or Dubai, then fly to the Maldivian island capital of Malé. From there, it's a boat trip or seaplane ride to your island of choice. By the time you've conquered a 12-hour flight, a lengthy layover, and another five-hour flight, you may be asking yourself: Is it worth it?
Bleary-eyed, you'll fling your body into the sea, and the Maldivian waters will work their magic. You'll have your answer.
"Barefoot pilots" fly these tiny island-hopper planes between the islands of the Maldives.

Lay of the land
Some background: Tourism arrived in the Maldives in 1972. Now, it is the major driver of the economy. (Fishing is second.) The concept is one resort per island, and these are small islands that you can cover by foot in 15 minutes or so. Resorts provide food, lodgings, and activities, so choose with care. Note that the national Maldivian language is Dhivehi, but English is widely used.
These islands are known for luxurious properties with overwater bungalows, but you can find lodgings at all price points these days. You could also stay on Malé, the capital, in a budget-priced business hotel or guest house, and make day trips to the beach.
For most visitors, though, this is a bucket-list, once-in-a-lifetime destination, so they'll spend a bit more for the experience.

The lush life
There's been plenty of hoopla surrounding the Four Seasons as the location for 'The White Lotus' TV series, most recently, Koh Samui in Thailand. Here, they really nail the serenity-meets-luxury vibe (bonus: no crowds). In addition to Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraaviru, they operate a smaller resort on Kuda Huraa and a small private luxury property, Voavah, that goes for $45k per night, 'a favorite of princes and presidents,' marketing manager Subah Jugari told us. (She wouldn't name names.)
The beach villas, with sunrise or sunset views, meld perfectly within the environment. Think thatched roofs, teak, and native Maldivian-style architecture accented with local lacquer work called
liyelaa jehun
or
laa jehun
. The overwater bungalows look pretty amazing, too.
The Four Seasons Maldives resorts are car-free; guests use staff-driven buggies (golf carts) and ride beach bikes to get around. At night, tall tiki torches illuminate the properties, adding a romantic touch.
We were expecting mostly couples, but we encountered lots of families and multi-gen groups at the resorts, many from the UK on school vacation. Each resort has a kids' club, and family-friendly activities like crab races and a nightly shark-feeding event. We joined a boat cruise in the waters near Kuda Huraa to look for spinner dolphins. (Spin they do, twisting and spiraling in the air like cetacean gymnasts.) Rays, sea turtles, and a variety of reef fishes populate the coral reefs here; joining a guided snorkeling trip gets you an up-close view. The ocean is so unbelievably clear, even those of us with lousy vision can get a look at the underwater marvels of the Maldives.

These waters are also known for whale sharks, the largest fish in the world. Trips to swim with whale sharks are a thing in the Maldives, but the Four Seasons resorts don't offer them, believing that the multiple boats and tourists are stressful for the fish. They're more involved with activities like sea turtle rehabilitation and a reef-regeneration project (guests can get involved with this), designed to protect the delicate ecosystem of the Maldives.
Fresh tuna on the daily? Yes please
Speaking of fish, if you're a lover of seafood, you'll be in culinary heaven here. We ate our body weight in fresh tuna. Local lobster and prawns are standouts, too. When you're marooned on an island with one resort, great food is important. The Four Seasons Maldives properties did not disappoint. Glorious fruits, resort-raised vegetables, and touches of Indian and Maldivian cookery create a vibrant dining experience.
Since we can't resist a cooking class, we signed up for Baraabaru Indian Cooking Class at Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa with chef Tamilarasan Ayyavoo. Our feast included tandoori prawns, curried lobster, chicken biryani, cucumber raita, and the tastiest, cheesiest naan ever. To recreate these at home, we'll have to seriously upgrade our spice collection. Of course, we can't recreate the setting at Baraabaru, the resort's Indian restaurant: dinner on a pier, under the stars, with manta rays circling below.
Al fresco meals, with feet in the sand, were a highlight here. We also loved the seaplane flights (barefoot pilots!) between resorts — you fly over islets that resemble geodes, a turquoise middle encircled by tawny sand. And the Island Spa at Kuda Huraa is on an actual island, reachable by
dhoni
(Maldivian-style boat), where guests indulge in 'flying meditation' and a 'healing waters' massage.
Back to that 'Is it worth it?' question: Are you the kind of person who loves to seek out the best sushi in Tokyo, the best pizza in New York, the ultimate … anything? Would you rather take one
amazing
trip to a fabulous resort than three 'nice' trips? Are you a beach lover to the depths of your soul? If so, this will be the best 8,573 miles you've ever traveled.
If you go. . .
Emirates and Qatar Airways are among the airlines that offer connecting flights from Boston to Malé, typically around 25 hours. The Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa has 96 villas (room rates from $1,000); Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraaviru has 103 villas (from $1,700);

The Vegas Minute: Survive the Summer in Style

'It's … hot.' – 'It's always hot.' – 'It's incredibly hot.' – 'Why are we here?!' For the uninitiated Vegas traveler, yes, it can be quite warm in the summer (Koppen climate classification Bwh: Hot Desert, if you want to get specific) so expect temps to soar into the high 90s, if not 110s, during your summer stay. Of course, the city is fully aware of the sunshine and has many ways to cool off: A/C's pumping 24/7, frosty frozen drinks and treats around every corner and, of course, hundreds and hundreds of unique pools to soak in. But if you're getting pruny in the water, what to do? Here are three absolutely unconventional, 'only-in-Vegas' ways to beat the heat! Unless you're up at 5 a.m., you're not going to get 18 holes of golf in during your stay without some serious sunshine beating down. Instead, try your hand at golf in the miniature at Swingers. Located within Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, this wild take on mini golf features four 'crazy golf' courses, all surrounding a faux English country house. The courses feature familiar miniature golf trappings like windmills, as well as wilder challenges like jumps and loops. The family-friendly venue also features carnival games, Detroit-style pizza, delicious burgers and a delightful drink menu (and yes, some are frozen!). Best of all, the entire venue falls under the merciful layer of famed Vegas A/C, so you can wile out the heat of the day, having a blast and trying for that elusive hole-in-one. Of course, it's not just Vegas that is hot during the summer months – we all live within that extended dome of high temps that comprises the American Southwest. So, no matter where you go for a weekend escape, you'll be feeling some perspiration. Why not soar above it all? Flyover in Las Vegas, a unique movie-meets-ride-meets-experience, offers an immersive (and mercifully cool) way to see the splendor of our region. Hanging over a giant screen, you'll soar and move over stunning scenery from the West, including the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park and Lake Tahoe, all while feeling the mist, the breeze and the ups and downs of your adventure as your seat sways, swoops and caroms over the wraparound visuals. It's as close as you can come to being there, but one thing the designers edited out was the heat! Wait, what? L.A. has Cinespia. It's a very fun way to see a film outside – and L.A. gets cool at night. Why would you want to watch a movie outside in Las Vegas' summer? What if it's a 'Dive-In Movie'? At the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas' Pool District, fan-favorite movies will be projected on their enormous marquee screen overlooking the Boulevard Pool on Mondays during the summer season. As the sun goes down and the heat backs off a bit, you can settle in with your feet in the pool and a frozen cocktail to catch The Goonies (June 23), Despicable Me (July 7) or even Elf for a little 'Christmas in July' (on the 25th during a special Friday showing and a themed night with special cocktails and bites). You can even get fancy and rent a cabana for the all-ages event, but let's be real here – in the heat of the summer, why wouldn't you take in a fine feature film from the pool itself?

Hotels' Luxury Brand Pop-Ups Are Creating the Ultimate Vacation Flex

On a scorching day in Taormina, Sicily, guests at the Four Seasons San Domenico Palace would usually be worshipping the sun by the infinity pool overlooking the Ionian Sea. But on a visit in mid-June, as I peer around from my perch on a cloud-like chaise, I realise everyone else at this picturesque former convent is more concerned with the towels. The lounge liners, swathed in a cobalt-blue floral motif that looks like Mediterranean ceramic tile, are positively delectable. They're Dolce & Gabbana and available for purchase at the hotel shop for about €559 ($656) apiece. In fact, almost everything on the pool deck sports the same fanciful print. It's all part of a summer resort takeover by the Italian fashion powerhouse: The umbrellas, the floats, the ceramic planters and even the napkins are D&G-branded. This is luxury writ (very) loud — and it's a trend playing out at hotels in almost every major summer destination, especially in Europe. Burberry tweeds deck out the Newt, a British resort in the Somerset countryside; Dior-branded buoys beckon in the water outside the Jumeirah Capri Palace off the Amalfi Coast; Missoni stripes cover the pool decks of the beach resorts Oku Ibiza and Cali Mykonos; Jacquemus' banana-yellow sunbeds have taken over the beach club at the Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer. The list goes on. Ilaria Alber-Glanstaetten, senior director of communications for the Four Seasons resorts in Italy, says these fashion-hotel mashups are like 'waking up on Christmas and finding presents under the tree.' The whole installation happened overnight, with some nine staffers and a crane employed to hoist a large D&G-patterned vase to the pool deck. Summer is, after all, the equivalent in the Mediterranean of 'festive' season — the once-a-year chance to capitalise on big business, glorious vibes and free-spirited spending. By real Christmas, this region is as quiet as a ghost town. ADVERTISEMENT Don't want to pay the $1,000-a-night room rates of these resorts during peak season? No problem. Last summer, day visitors to Puente Romano Marbella on Spain's Costa del Sol could get an accessibly priced taste of a luxury brand by ordering a mille-feuille with Fendi Fs dusted in cocoa powder; this year, at Rome's Hotel de Russie, day guests can enjoy a €26 Champagne cocktail at the Aquazzura-branded garden bar. But back in Sicily, only overnight guests at the San Domenico Palace are afforded the privilege of buying a certain €1,700 silk D&G shirt from the hotel boutique. When I hit the store myself — it's housed in a former sacristy — I gaze up at the frescoes and consider charging a dress to my credit card. I am just barely able to resist the glamour of the moment. Instead I head outside, where, conveniently for my bank account, a D&G-branded gelato cart is serving free granita. These partnerships hit a travel sweet spot: They're ephemeral experiences that create a sense of urgency ('Get there now, before it's gone!') and encourage social media sharing ('I was there, and I can prove it!'). And they're happening at a time when travel is thriving — but retail is not. A June report from Bain & Co. says the luxury sector is undergoing its first contraction in 15 years, but a May survey from Chase Travel shows 38 percent of cardholders plan to spend more than they did last year on globe-trotting adventures, even amid deep economic uncertainty. 'The only luxury sector that's actually growing now is hospitality,' says Fflur Roberts, global insight manager for luxury goods at Euromonitor International. That success has spurred unprecedented expansion among top-tier hotel brands, which means everyone else needs to work hard to stay relevant. Pop-ups are a brand-safe way to do just that. Guests are even starting to expect them, says Eric Mourkakos, owner of Cali Mykonos, which opened in 2022 and charges non-guests €100 for day passes to its Missoni resort club. Chase's survey backs up the demand, noting that 79 percent of Generation Z travellers want to shop on their travels, and 64 percent of them seek out limited brand collabs. 'It's an equation where everyone wins,' says Cristina Borges, who teaches a course on luxury fashion and lifestyle trends for the prestigious Les Roches International School of Hotel Management in Switzerland. 'Fashion brands gain easy exposure to a new, affluent audience. Hotels can offer exclusive experiences to their guests. And customers get to have fun and feel part of exclusive moments and post about them.' Plus, she says, 'retailers need to meet their clients in the one place that they are still happy to spend money.' The three-month Fendi partnership last year at Puente Romano Marbella cost about $600,000, says Borges, who was formerly its marketing director. The resort split that outlay with Fendi, then reaped $1 million in added profit — plus reams of media exposure. Andrew Foulkes, CEO of hospitality at the Newt, says the goal of its Burberry pop-up is buzz and new guest bookings. 'We are really trying to grow our reach in America, where Burberry is big,' he says. And it benefits his partner too: 'It's amazing how many people want to come and buy a Burberry bucket hat.' ADVERTISEMENT Euromonitor's Roberts says that creating a 'scarcity effect' adds layers of social clout. 'If you didn't take a picture and post it, did you even go on vacation?' says Stephanie Phair, former chair of the British Fashion Council and consultant to top luxury brands. Of course, the strategy has its pitfalls. In the worst case, a partnership can feel misaligned or can create chaos by association should, say, the fashion brand (or designer) become embroiled in some sort of controversy. Brand dilution is another concern. 'You don't want your hotel to feel like an ad for someone else,' says Rosewood Regional Vice President Edouard Grosmangin, who's installing a partnership with Brazilian menswear label Frescobol Carioca at its Riviera Maya outpost in Mexico. Arguing against a broader takeover, he says: 'We're keeping it very discreet, no logos anywhere. And we'll sell their products only if it's alongside the local artisan wares that people love in our boutiques.' To his point, you really don't need Dolce & Gabbana anything to feel fabulous at the San Domenico Palace, which served as the backdrop to Season 2 of HBO's The White Lotus. But I embrace the moment and, channeling the enthusiasm of a group of American teens posing for selfies with their scoops of that D&G granita, I post a picture with my own—in a refreshing jammy fig flavour—before it melts. The image gets more likes on my Instagram than anything I've shared in recent memory.
