Stephen Welsh shoulder issue may require surgery

Glasgow Times2 days ago
Midfielder Luke McCowan opened the scoring for the Scottish champions in the inaugural Cork Super Cup game in Ireland in the 28th minute with a sweet strike from just inside the box but a mix-up in the Hoops defence in the 67th minute, with interval substitute Welsh culpable, led to an equaliser from Matthew Murray.
There was more misery for the 25-year-old centre-back, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Belgian side Mechelen, when he had to go off with his arm strapped up to protect yet another shoulder problem.
Eighteen-year-old Colby Donovan, who was substituted before coming back on to replace Welsh, scored the late winner with a header.
Hoops boss Rodgers confirmed Welsh's situation to Celtic TV, saying: 'He's done his shoulder again.
'It's the fourth time that it's popped out so I think you know when it keeps coming out like that, there's the possibility of an operation. So, he has to have a wee think about that.
'I think by the time the physios got on, it popped back in, but the pain was too sore so we took him off.'
Rodgers described the match against the League of Ireland outfit at Pairc Ui Chaoimh as a 'really good exercise' for his side, which was far from full strength and which was much changed by the final whistle.
The Northern Irishman said: 'First half, really good. We obviously changed the team and a lot of the young players in the second half will have learned from that.
'We didn't quite keep the ball so well and gave up the ball too cheaply.
'But overall, still find that Celtic mentality to keep going right to the very end and I've always said there's never a friendly when you play for Celtic. It's always a test because every team will want to always beat you.
'So we kept going right to the very end and Colby, who's been excellent, got the winning goal.'
Celtic made it two wins out of two in pre-season after a win against Queen's Park last Friday and will head off to Portugal to continue their preparation for the upcoming campaign.
Rodgers said: 'Obviously come the weekend, the international players will be back involved in the game (against Estrela da Amadora).
'But the start to the pre-season has been really good and we've got to continue working very, very hard. I think that's the nature of pre-season.
'There's no let-up, there's nothing easy, got to work to build that foundation of fitness and then we'll be, as I said, fully prepared, but we're looking forward to Portugal.'
Meanwhile, Celtic announced Gustaf Lagerbielke has joined Braga on a permanent transfer.
The 25-year-old Sweden defender joined the Parkhead club from Elfsborg in 2023 but spent last season on loan at Twente in the Netherlands.

Wimbledon ball girl stuns players as she starts playing rally and wins

Wimbledon ball girl stuns players as she starts playing rally and wins She filled in for a quick rally with some of the most decorated players in tennis earlier this week A ball girl stunned the crowds at Wimbledon by enjoying a short rally, and even winning winning a couple of points against Xavier Malisse and Marco Baghdatis (Image: BBC ) Wimbledon is arguably one the most iconic tournaments in all of sport. A stage reserved for some of the biggest names in tennis. So when a ball girl was offered the chance to take to the court herself, it must have been a dream come true. ‌ Australian Mark Philippoussis and his partner Lleyton Hewitt had just taken a 3-1 lead in the first set of their clash with Xavier Malisse and Marco Baghdatis in the Men's Invitational Doubles match on Tuesday. ‌ But when Philippoussis was forced into a short break with the fifth game tied at deuce, Malisse could be seen wandering over to the side of the court, before asking a nearby ball girl "do you want to play for a bit?" Without flinching, she obliged. Despite the apparent confidence, her first serve went straight into the net, while her second was intercepted by Malisse before it could bounce. The AI line judge, which has been the subject of some controversy in this tournament, called the second attempt as 'out' but play continued. Article continues below The ball girl then traded some really impressive shots with Baghdatis before then landing a well-placed lob over Malisse and inside the baseline, much to the delight of the crowd - and indeed temporary partner Hewitt, who duly gave her a hearty high five. The umpire, getting into the spirit of the moment, then humorously called "advantage, ball girl". Her first serve for the next point was comfortably in, but after a brief rally with Malisse, she could only find the net. ‌ Back at deuce, and the ball girl produced a somewhat ropier serve for the following point, although play once again continued despite the AI line judge's call. Then after a brief rally, came a stunning forehand down the line that left Malisse wrong-footed. The Belgian dropping is racket in apparent disbelief as the crowd erupted. ‌ Advantage ball girl again, but sadly the makeshift partnership couldn't see it out, with Malisse and Baghdatis eventually coming back to win the game. Then again, the ball girl still managed to delight the crowd, narrowly missing one of her colleagues who had dashed out to retrieve a ball off the court seemingly not realising play was going to continue, before then producing a vicious backhand nearly took out Hewitt. "If you hit Lleyton, I'll give you 100 pounds," Malisse then joked. Article continues below Malisse and Baghdatis would eventually take the game and the break point, with the umpire then cracking: "Hewitt, Philippoussis and the ball girl lead by three games to two". A moment this youngster is unlikely to forget in a hurry.

Two burning Rangers transfer rumours spark Hotline hilarity as Ibrox 'desperation' has Celtic fans in stitches

Transfer fever is sweeping the Hotline and a couple of swirling Rangers rumours haven't gone down particularly well. They're sharing a training base with Sheffield Wednesday this week and have been linked with a move to bring Josh Windass back to the club. Peter Cooperwhite said: "Can't believe what I read on the Rangers WhatsApp, now we might be considering Josh Windass. Haven't been massively impressed with the signings but really have to up the ante. Do no big names want to come to Rangers?" They also haven't ruled out a move for 38-year-old Jamie Vardy and Stephen Johnstone, Ardentinny, said: "Rangers are now touted as ex Leicester striker Jamie Vardy's new adventure. That's a non-starter Desperation is creeping into Ibrox and they can't attract a high caliber player like the Gascoigne era, more like ones that are looking at their last pay check. "One can see a new name finishing second and it won't be Russell Martin 's new bunch of OAPs (Over Average Players), Vardy or not." Lennon Miller is one of the hottest prospects in Scottish football but Stephen Mulhern, Cork, said: "I read Gordon Dalziel say he feels a imminent move for Lennon Miller is in the pipeline however unless Celtic move out one of their key midfielders, I feel this is highly unlikely to happen. "Celtic won't pay top dollar for him to warm the bench and at this stage of Miller's career, he himself wouldn't accept that. Another word of caution though, I remember David Turnbull arriving with a similar reputation but he never fulfilled his potential so the warning signs are there if paying serious money for him." Donald Dundas, Uddingston, said: "Neither Rangers or Celtic went in for Lennon Miller as none of them want to pay top dollar to a Scottish football team. They would much rather take them on compensation deals or out of contract. As for Lawrence Shankland, he wouldn't be a success at either of the Old Firm I'm afraid." Scott McAdam, Glasgow, had a few stern words for Hotline regular George Wilson. He said: "I must admit its hilarious watching George Wilson backtrack after the nonsense he spouts about Europe. Only he would think Man Utd or Spurs or Nice are on a par with Atlanta and Bayern Munich. "Congratulations George you are now at Alan Flett's level of knowledge which is limited to say the least." Along similar lines, Glen Mitchell said: "To all the Ibrox blowhards, who keep going on and on about how great their team are in in the second level Europa League. Just to put it simply, think of it the same way as thinking that Falkirk are world beaters for performing well in the Championship. "The clue is in there somewhere for you and it's not rocket science. And when you actually ever win a match in the Champions League, then shout about it. Bursaspor was in another time." England Women bounced back from defeat to France with a 4-0 win over the Netherlands on Wednesday night and Gary Stevenson, Newtonhill, said: "Fair play to the English Lionesses for their performances at the Women's Euros. They must be absolutely knackered after doing all those adverts."
