It makes me wonder if I were finishing high school today, would a university degree offer the same clear-cut value proposition it did a decade ago? Why spend years studying when you can make six figures in construction straight out of school.
In Australia, construction wages have outpaced the broader economy over the past decade as a result of increasing labour shortages, mirroring trends in the US, where blue-collar workers have seen significant wage gains post-pandemic.
'The median income of men in their 20s with a vocational qualification is higher than for those with a bachelor's degree,' says Andrew Norton, a professor of higher education policy at Monash Business School.

But he adds: 'Income growth in trades tends to stall in their 30s, while it continues for graduates.'
According to The Wall Street Journal, young Americans are increasingly choosing trades over higher education, perceiving that they offer better job prospects in a future where artificial intelligence threatens white-collar graduate roles. Some employers are now offering highschoolers $US70,000 ($107,000) jobs to take up a trade.
Increasing economic uncertainty and fears of recession are also causing companies to retain existing workers longer, while reports from the UK and US reveal graduates are struggling to find work as entry-level positions disappear.

Specifically as it pertains to Taiwan, the principal lesson Trump has learned from the US's involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan is that tech is better than boots on the ground. In those circumstances where foreign provocations demand a US military response, Trump will habitually favour the use of remote weapons, as seen by US strikes into Iran, Yemen, Africa and the Red Sea. During his first term, Trump used armed drones more than any of his predecessors. Trump and his fellow MAGAs recognise that the death or capture of a single service member by a hostile force is always a divisive development in US domestic politics. He is determined to avoid such incidents, which leaves the defence of Taiwan in a perilous predicament. The last thing Donald Trump and his MAGA base want to see are US soldiers or marines in firefights with Chinese forces in Taiwan. MAGA disciples such as JD Vance, Marco Rubio and Kristi Noem are Trump's champions of industrial power. Like Reaganomics, which served the Republican party for 45 years, this cohort will be the guardians of the big beautiful bill for years to come. The MAGAs realise that "business as usual" with respect to national security posturing is no longer sufficient by military might alone. It's a realisation that through industrial power, both government and the private sector must determine together how to best proceed in building and sustaining national security capabilities with its foundation being "made in America." Industrial power requires a nation to make strategic public investments designed to strengthen its economic and national security posture. Such investments must be broader in scope than the traditional defence industries. This requires governments to ensure effective production and supply chains exist for goods and manufacturing that serve the needs of the whole economy - not just the defence industrial base. It must be an expanded aperture that strengthens not only a nation's security but collectively strengthens the livelihood of each citizen. Although some in Australia believe America's resolve to its allies is suspect and its global popularity is declining, a national security strategy focused on industrial power that is aligned with the US will ultimately benefit all Australians. The US, under Trump and the MAGAs, is once again seen as the leader of a global alliance of more than 60 partner nations that collectively account for almost 80 per cent of the world's GDP. Australia should view these nations' industrial power as a global security system that supports our industries, our national security, and most of all - our citizens. There is a lesson here for Australia: "Made in Australia" is and always will be our most reliable national security deterrent.

Government ‘won't give up' on US tariff reprieve after Trump celebrates end of beef ban
Trade Minister Don Farrell has insisted the federal government could convince Donald Trump to remove all tariffs on Australian goods, as the US president said he would use the decision to allow North American beef into the country to pressure other countries to capitulate in trade talks. The Trump administration hailed the deal, announced on Thursday, as a win even as analysts said the step was unlikely to significantly boost US shipments because beef prices are much lower in Australia. 'The other Countries that refuse our magnificent Beef are ON NOTICE,' Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Thursday. 'All of our Nation's Ranchers, who are some of the hardest working and most wonderful people, are smiling today, which means I am smiling too. Let's keep the Hot Streak going. IT'S THE GOLDEN AGE OF AMERICA!' Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has attempted to renegotiate trade deals with multiple countries that he asserts have taken advantage of the United States over the years. Many economists have disputed Trump's characterisation. Farrell said the beef decision was science-based and unconnected to trade negotiations. 'We haven't done this in order to entice the Americans into a trade agreement,' he said in an appearance at the Lowy Institute think tank on Friday. Loading 'We think they should do that anyway. We think the Americans should honour the terms of our free trade agreement.' Asked if it was fanciful to expect Australia could be given an exemption to Trump's baseline 10 per cent tariff when no other country has achieved this, Farrell said: 'I think eventually the Americans will come to the realisation that tariffs are an act of self harm that are actually pushing up inflation, pushing up unemployment and reduced their retirement benefits and economic growth. So I don't think we should give up on the ambition to get those tariffs removed.' Farrell said that because of the shift away from free trade under Trump 'what we risk seeing is a shift from a system based on shared prosperity and interdependence to one based solely on power and size'.
