John Elway Won't Face Charges in Golf Cart Death of Friend as Police Rule Incident an 'Accident'
Sperbeck was riding in a golf cart with friend and business partner John Elway before he fell off and hit his head
Sperbeck was 62Police have officially ruled the death of John Elway's longtime friend and agent Jeff Sperbeck a 'tragic accident,' and have announced that no charges will be filed.
Sperbeck died on April 30, four days after he fell from a golf cart and hit his head.
Sperbeck was 62 years old.
In May, officials announced that Sperbeck's cause of death was from blunt force trauma to the head, PEOPLE previously reported. The Riverside County Coroner's Bureau told PEOPLE that Sperbeck's death appeared to be an accident, and that the fatal injury occurred when the "passenger fell from" the golf cart.
Riverside County Sheriff's Office officials have long said there was 'nothing' to indicate foul play or any criminal activity that led to Sperbeck's death, and on Monday, authorities made that assumption official.
Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco told local 9News that authorities have concluded their investigation into the incident and shared that 'nothing criminal' had taken place.
'It's over,'' Bianco told the outlet. 'We've talked to everyone involved and we found nothing new. There was nothing criminal, it was what we've been saying all along that this was a tragic accident.'
Bianco confirmed to the local news station that Elway was driving the golf cart at the time of the accident and that they were driving back to Elway's home from the nearby Madison Club in La Quinta, Calif. The sheriff said video of the incident allowed police to closely review what happened.
'I've looked at the video 100 times and there's no explanation as to why he fell off,' Bianco told 9News. 'He just fell off.'
Elway made the 911 call immediately after Sperbeck fell. 'I listened to the entire 911 call,'' Bianco previously told the outlet. 'He was very articulate. He was very responsive. He was not slurring his words. He was not hesitating in his response with the dispatcher. It was a normal urgent conversation.'
Sperbeck was Elway's agent during his NFL playing career. The two became close and later co-founded the winery 7Cellars together. According to their business' website, Sperbeck worked with more than 100 NFL players throughout his career as an agent, including Elway. The Hall of Fame quarterback began working with Sperbeck in 1990 and also helped the retired NFL star open several restaurants under his own name.

"There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me," Elway's statement said. "My heart and deepest sympathies go out to Jeff's wife, Cori; his children Carly, Sam and Jackson; and everyone who knew and loved him. Jeff will be deeply missed for the loyalty, wisdom, friendship and love he brought into my life and the lives of so many others.'

Rick Singer allowed to return to college consulting business after infamous 'Varsity Blues' scandal
Rick Singer, the 64-year-old man at the center of the "Varsity Blues" college admissions scandal was allowed to return to his old job by a federal judge, but must disclose his criminal past to potential clients. Singer's new coaching company ID Future Stars, which is focused on college consulting, says it provides "comprehensive life coaching and college admissions guidance with a hands-on approach that discovers how we can best help your child achieve their dreams," according to its website. Chief District Judge Denise Casper wrote in a Monday order that Singer must provide a specific, lengthy and detailed notice to parents seeking to retain him. "In March 2019, Rick Singer pled guilty to federal charges-including racketeering conspiracy, money laundering conspiracy, conspiracy to defraud the United States, and obstruction of justice-for his role in what was widely-publicized as the 'Varsity Blues' college admissions scheme," the court ordered statement says. "Specifically, Mr. Singer admitted to,among other things: bribing standardized test proctors and administrators to engage in cheating on college entrance exams (i.e., the SAT and ACT); falsifying students' academic transcripts by paying third parties to take classes in their names; falsifying students' college applications with fake awards, athletic activities, and fabricated essays; and bribing college athletic coaches and administrators, through purported donations to their programs and personal bribes, to designate students as athletic recruits based on falsified athletic credentials. As part of the scheme, Mr. Singer took in more than $25 million from his clients, from which he made payments to co-conspirators totaling more than $7 million, and transferred, spent, or otherwise used more than $15 million for his own benefit." The statement ordered by the judge did not end there. "On January 4, 2023, a federal court in Boston sentenced Mr. Singer to 42 months in prison and three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay more than $10 million in restitution and to forfeit assets totaling more than $8.7 million. The U.S. Department of Justices press release announcing Mr. Singers sentence can be found at: Mr. Singer served his prison sentence and is currently on supervised release. The terms of Mr. Singer's supervised release require him to provide this disclosure," it continued. Singer was found guilty in a bribery scheme where he helped celebrities, business people and wealthy clients get their kids into elite schools. He was sentenced to 3 ½ years in prison in 2023. Prosecutors said Singer received over $25 million from clients and paid bribes which amounted to over $7 million. Singer also used over $15 million of money from clients for his own personal advantage, prosecutors also said. "Full House" actor Lori Laughlin, her husband Mossimo Giannulli and "Desperate Housewives" actor Felicity Huffman were also handed prison time for their participation in the scandal. Fox News Digital reached out to Singer for comment.

Runaway Michigan teenager found in Indiana after deputies request a phone trace
A mid-Michigan teen runaway was safely located in Indiana after a missing person investigation involving law enforcement agencies from both states. The 14-year-old girl was reported as a runaway on July 11 from Ionia Township, according to the report from Ionia County Sheriff's Office. Officers then learned that the minor had been in an online relationship with a man from Kentucky, and left willingly with him. "The investigation revealed troubling signs of manipulation and control by the suspect, prompting an emergency phone location order," the report said. The phone trace was able to locate the suspect's vehicle in Indiana. Indiana State Police then located and intercepted the vehicle around 1:19 a.m. July 19. "The juvenile was found unharmed and has since been reunited with family," the Ionia County Sheriff's Office reported. The suspect remains in custody and the investigation continues.
