Air India Express delayed Airbus engine fix, forged records: Report

India Todaya day ago
Aviation regulator Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) reprimanded Air India Express, Air India's low-cost carrier, in March for failing to promptly replace engine components on an Airbus A320, as mandated by the European Union's aviation safety authority, and for falsifying records to appear compliant, according to a confidential government memo reviewed by news agency Reuters. In a statement, the airline told Reuters that it had acknowledged the lapse and implemented "remedial action and preventive measures."advertisementThe confidential memo, sent to the airline in March and accessed by Reuters, said that surveillance by the DGCA revealed the parts modification "was not complied" on an engine of an Airbus A320 "within the prescribed time limit".
"In order to show that the work has been carried out within the prescribed limits, the AMOS records have apparently been altered/forged," the memo added, referring to the Aircraft Maintenance and Engineering Operating System software used by airlines to manage maintenance and airworthiness.Air India Express said that its technical team missed the scheduled implementation date for parts replacement due to the migration of records on its monitoring software, and fixed the problem soon after it was identified. It did not give dates of compliance or directly address DGCA's comment about records being altered, but said that after the March memo it took "necessary administrative actions", which included removing the quality manager from the person's position and suspending the deputy continuing airworthiness manager. The serious breach comes as the Tata-owned airline group faces intense scrutiny in the wake of June's fatal crash of an Air India Dreamliner in Ahmedabad — the worst aviation disaster in a decade — which killed 241 of the 242 people onboard. Though unrelated, the crash has spotlighted broader safety oversight and procedural adherence within the airline group. The March safety lapse preceded the crash by several months but is part of a string of violations flagged by the regulator this year. In addition to the Air India Express engine issue, the DGCA warned Air India for flying three Airbus aircraft with overdue escape slide checks and separately cited 'serious violations' of pilot duty timing rules in June. The VT-ATD aircraft typically serves domestic routes and short international sectors, including Dubai and Muscat. The engine component changes were mandated due to 'manufacturing deficiencies' that posed potential safety risks, according to the EU's aviation safety agency.A former Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau official, Vibhuti Singh, called the lapse 'a grave mistake,' emphasising that delayed engine fixes — especially when operating near restricted airspace or over water — dramatically increase operational risk.Government data shows that in 2023, authorities issued safety warnings or fines in 23 cases, with 11 involving either Air India or Air India Express.Since acquiring Air India in 2022, the Tata Group has aimed to turn it into a global carrier of high repute. However, the airline continues to battle recurring customer complaints about aircraft conditions and onboard services, further complicated now by a deepening safety crisis.- EndsWith input from ReutersTune InMust Watch

Lenders reject Jaypee Infratech's request to accept its bid to acquire bankrupt firm

NEW DELHI: Lenders of Jaiprakash Associates Ltd (JAL) have turned down Jaypee Infratech 's request to accept its resolution plan to acquire the bankrupt diversified company. Five companies -- Adani Enterprises , Vedanta Group , Dalmia Bharat Cement , Jindal Power and PNC Infratech -- have submitted their resolution plans to acquire JAL. However, lenders of JAL, on June 25, had rejected the resolution plan of Suraksha Group-owned Jaypee Infratech Ltd as the bid was submitted late and without earnest money. According to sources, Jaypee Infratech requested the Committee of Creditors (CoC) of JAL to reconsider the decision to reject its bid. It sought permission to participate in the insolvency process. In a meeting on July 1, the members of the CoC unanimously agreed not to change its earlier decision to reject Jaypee Infratech's resolution plan, they added. In the meeting, the resolution professional also presented a brief summary of the five resolution plans, according to sources. A detailed summary of all five resolution plans would be prepared, based on which the highest bidder will be determined, they added. Some of the bids are conditional and linked to the outcome of the pending legal cases, they said. JAL, which has business interests spanning real estate, cement manufacturing, hospitality, and engineering & construction, was admitted into the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP) through the National Company Law Tribunal, Allahabad Bench, order dated June 3, 2024. JAL was taken to insolvency proceedings after the conglomerate defaulted on the payment of loans. Creditors are claiming a staggering Rs 57,185 crore. The National Asset Reconstruction Company Ltd (NARCL) leads the list of claimants after acquiring the stressed JAL loans from a consortium of lenders headed by the State Bank of India (SBI). JAL has major real estate projects like Jaypee Greens in Greater Noida, a part of Jaypee Greens Wishtown in Noida (both on the outskirts of the national capital), and the Jaypee International Sports City, strategically located near the upcoming Jewar International Airport. It also has three commercial/industrial office spaces in Delhi-NCR, while its hotel division has five properties in Delhi-NCR, Mussoorie, and Agra. JAL has four cement plants in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, and a few leased limestone mines in Madhya Pradesh. The cement plants, however, are non-operational. It also has investments in subsidiaries, including Jaiprakash Power Ventures Ltd, Yamuna Expressway Tolling Ltd, Jaypee Infrastructure Development Ltd and several other companies. Jaypee Group's Jaypee Infratech has already been acquired by Mumbai-based Suraksha Group through an insolvency process. Suraksha Group has to complete various stalled projects comprising around 20,000 apartments in Noida and Greater Noida.

Ex-Jet Airways CEO shares pics of garbage-filled Gurugram streets, then jeers: 'Want to build Disneyland in Haryana?'

Aviation industry veteran and former Jet Airways CEO, Sanjiv Kapoor, has sharply criticised civic authorities in Gurugram, highlighting the poor state of sanitation and infrastructure in the city. His social media post has once again sparked public anger over the neglect of basic civic duties. On Saturday, Kapoor shared photos on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, showing piles of rubbish strewn along a roadside in Sector 44, Gurugram. Several cows could be seen standing or resting amidst the garbage. The images, clicked from inside a car, also included a screenshot from Google Maps to confirm the location. Kapoor wrote, 'Months later, worse than ever before. Shame on you, @MunCorpGurugram @DC_Gurugram @cmohry — no respect for the land, for tax-paying citizens, and not even for the cows! And you want to build a Disneyland in Haryana? Ludicrous!' Kapoor has also been in the news recently for defending Air India following the fatal crash of a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner in Ahmedabad this June, which claimed more than 260 lives. Responding to social media calls for banning the airline, he wrote, 'Amazing! Tens, even hundreds of thousands are killed in road & rail accidents each year in India - 2,000+ a year on Mumbai's suburban rail alone — and people don't bat an eyelid. Air India has had a stellar safety record for decades. One tragedy and people lose all sense of perspective.' He further pointed out the global safety record of the aircraft, saying, 'Maybe because until the tragedy of AI-171, the Boeing 787 had flown over 5 million flights since its launch without a crash or fatality? Air turnbacks and minor tech glitches occur several times a day across all aircraft types. Flying remains the safest form of transportation.'
