Reformed review: Elsa Guedj's French drama starts strong but falters in execution
The French drama 'Reformed', now streaming on JioHotstar, starts off like a breath of fresh air. It follows the journey of Lea, a young woman in her early 20s who has just become a rabbi. Like many others her age, she is trying hard to figure out who she really the beginning, 'Reformed' feels exciting. We meet Lea as she fumbles through religious duties, questions her faith and navigates dating and relationships. She's not perfect, and that's what makes her interesting. Her confusion feels real. For many young adults, it might even feel personal and relatable. That feeling of trying to be an adult without really knowing how? Yes, it Guedj, who plays Lea, is the show's biggest strength. She brings heart, humour, and honesty to the screen. It's easy to see why she won the Best Actress award at the Series Mania series is also inspired by the writings of Delphine Horvilleur, one of France's few female rabbis. That adds depth and a personal touch to Lea's story. Her struggles, from caring for her atheist father (played by actor Eric Elmosnino) to grappling with religious rituals she is unsure of, feel real. A subplot involving her father introducing his girlfriend to his adult children enriches the narrative, making it more first three episodes are promising. They offer something different, and Lea's world feels warm and relatable. The show addresses taboo topics like circumcision and cremation in a clever manner. But good acting and a strong premise aren't enough when the writing falls flat. And sadly, that's what happens pacing slows. New characters are introduced but make little impact. Some storylines appear and disappear without closure. Scenes begin to feel repetitive, and the energy one felt in the beginning fizzles out. What begins as an engaging exploration of identity and belief slowly turns into a sluggish, scattered narrative. The plot thins and side plots go nowhere. The writing plays it too safe, and the slow pacing becomes a the show's focus shifts to abstract religious discussions, sidelining the personal journeys of the characters that first draw you in. The result? You may find yourself checking your phone mid-episode, a clear sign that the story has lost its grip. You might even find yourself thinking of another show along similar lines - Netflix's 'Nobody Wants This', which follows the story of Noah (played by Adam Brody), a male rabbi who falls in love with Joanne (played by Kristenn Bell), a podcaster. That series balances humour, romance and religion, making it solid entertainer. You find yourself rooting for the lead couple.'Reformed', on the other hand, does none of that. There is a scene where Lea's father tells her that she may not find a partner now that she's a female rabbi. Following which, she doubts herself and goes on a date. Later, she bumps into an old-school flame, now engaged, who asks her to elope with him just before the wedding. But the plotline ends abruptly. We see less of Lea as a young woman navigating life and more of a female not that 'Reformed' is bad. It's just okay. And when a show begins with so much promise, okay feels you are hoping for consistent storytelling, emotional payoff, or meaningful character arcs, 'Reformed' doesn't quite deliver. It starts strong but doesn't hold your attention for bottom line is, 'Reformed' is like a journey that begins with hope but loses sight of its destination.- Ends2.5 out of 5 stars to Watch

Rupee drops as traders await CPI print; ends near 86 mark on tariff fears
The Indian Rupee remained under pressure for the second day as US President Donald Trump's tariff tensions continued to weigh on traders ahead of the retail inflation figures. The domestic currency closed 19 paise lower at 85.99 against the dollar on Monday, according to Bloomberg. The rupee has depreciated by 0.59 per cent against the greenback in the current financial year, and has witnessed 0.47 per cent depreciation in the current calendar year. Rupee traded weak as the dollar index showed recovery, rising towards the 98 mark from recent lows of 96.50 over the past week, according to Jateen Trivedi, VP research analyst - commodity and currency at LKP Securities. Additionally, a rebound in crude oil prices and slight weakness in domestic capital markets added pressure on the rupee, he said. "With these factors weighing on sentiment, the rupee remained on the back foot. The currency is expected to trade in a range of 85.45 to 86.25." All eyes will be on the consumer price index (CPI)-based retail inflation data, that is likely to have cooled further in June, thus remaining below the 4 per cent target of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a fifth consecutive month, giving the central bank wiggle room to focus on growth. In May, the retail inflation rate stood at a 75-month low of 2.82 per cent, while in June last year, it was 5.08 per cent. Earlier in the day, the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation dipped to -0.13 per cent in June, from 0.39 per cent in May, marking the first negative reading since the beginning of the year. The drop was largely driven by deflationary trends in food articles, fuel and power, and basic metals. Globally, traders remained cautious after Trump announced a 30 per cent tariff on imports from the European Union and Mexico, set to take effect from August 1. The EU postponed its 30 per cent retaliatory tariffs against the US to allow for further talks. The dollar index, a measure of the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, was up 0.03 per cent at 97.88. In commodities, crude oil prices extended gains as investors weighed the prospects of additional US sanctions on Russia, amid trade tensions. Brent crude price was up 0.91 per cent at $71.00 per barrel, while WTI crude prices were higher by 0.91 per cent at 69.07, as of 3:20 PM IST.

Mivi AI Buds: Human-like AI, local manufacturing, and voice avatars- All made in India
India-based audio brand Mivi is making headlines with the launch of its first AI-driven personal assistant, Mivi AI, and the upcoming release of Mivi AI Buds. Designed and developed entirely in India, the new TWS earbuds aim to deliver human-like conversations through intelligent AI Avatars, setting a new benchmark in audio tech. Mivi AI Buds are India's first AI-powered TWS earbuds offering human-like conversations through personalised Avatars.(Mivi) Speaking to Hindustan Times Technology, Midhula Devabhaktuni, co-founder of Mivi, highlighted the unique capabilities of the assistant: 'It can be your personal news reporter, chef to provide instructions on how to cook, your wellness coach, your nutritionist that reminds you of daily targets.' Unlike conventional voice assistants that follow a Q&A format, Mivi AI offers contextual and memory-based conversations. It evolves over time by learning user habits, preferences, and even tone of communication. 'It will start learning about the user and create a persona, learning about preferences, dislikes, response styles, habits, and as simple as favourite foods,' Midhula explained. Also read: Mivi AI adds human-like conversation capabilities on earbuds To protect user privacy, Mivi has implemented end-to-end encryption. Users will be able to customise or delete specific pieces of information—like preferred cuisines or interests—via a companion app. 'Users will also be able to view the data Mivi AI has gathered about them and choose to remove it,' she added. The AI Avatars, including Chef, Guru, and Wellness Coach, are core to the experience. 'Avatars provide context-based and tailored responses. For example, the Chef Avatar won't just tell you how to marinate chicken—it understands time, waits during the marination, and resumes with the next step after,' she explained. 'It's like your mother guiding you through the process.' Midhula revealed that Mivi developed its own custom chip to process AI interactions in real time, embedded within the compact design of the earbuds. 'We built a neural network trained on thousands of voice samples from different Indian regions, where language and accent vary every hundred kilometres,' she said. The entire system—from hardware to firmware and app interface—has been built from scratch at Mivi's Hyderabad facility. 'We are targeting to do 5 lakh units in year one for the Mivi AI Buds,' said Midhula. 'The technology and devices are manufactured, designed, and developed in India. We have about 15,500 people working, with about 80% being women.' Mivi is also preparing to launch India's largest audio manufacturing unit, spread across two acres, in the coming months. When asked why Mivi calls its product the world's first 'human-like AI,' Midhula pointed out, 'Mivi AI is not just an AI tool like Google Assistant or ChatGPT. It's a natively AI audio product built for fluid, natural, voice-first interaction.' She emphasised that Mivi AI doesn't rely on screens or typing and instead brings conversation back to the centre of tech. 'Mivi AI is India's answer to the world of where India's AI lies,' she said. 'Everybody is building something, and we are consuming. This is our chance to give it to the world and say, 'India is also making leaps and bounds in AI.'
