Assefa sets women's only record to win London Marathon women's race after late breakaway
Assefa made up for second-place finishes in London and the Paris Olympics last year by pulling away from Joyciline Jepkosgei near the end to finish in 2 hours, 15 minutes and 50 seconds. It was the fastest ever time in a women's-only marathon — but 25 seconds slower than the course record set by Paula Radcliffe in 2003 when it was a mixed race.
Peres Jepchirchir had set the previous women's only record of 2:16:16 when she won in London last year ahead of Assefa. Ruth Chepngetich of Kenya set the overall women's world record of 2:09:56 at last year's Chicago Marathon.
The weather in London was a lot warmer this year than in 2024 — with temperaturse nearing 18 C (64F) by the time the elite runners were finishing — which Assefa said was to her advantage.
'Last year I did have some problems with the cold, my hamstring tightened up toward the end of the race,' Assefa said through an interpreter. 'This year the weather suited me really well.'
Assefa adds this win to two previous Berlin Marathon titles.
She was beaten in a sprint at the Paris Olympics by Sifan Hassan last year. This time she made sure there would be no sprint finish as she left Jepkosgei behind with a few kilometers left and ran alone along the Thames and through central London to the finish in front of Buckingham Palace.
Jepkosgei, the 2021 London winner, was almost three minutes back after tiring near the end.
'It was a little bit humid,' Jepkosgei said. 'My body was not responding well. And I said, let's preserve my energy to arrive safely at the finish line.'
Hassan fell behind about halway through the race and finished third, 3:10 behind.
Sabastian Sawe of Kenya won the men's race for his biggest career victory after making a solo breakaway with about 10 kilometers left.

Edmundo Sosa and Weston Wilson hit back-to-back homers in the eighth for a 13-3 lead. Phillies starter Jesús Luzardo (10-5) allowed a two-run homer to Tyler O'Neill and a solo shot to Jordan Westburg over six innings. Key stat Schwarber has reached 40 homers in three of his four seasons with the Phillies. He hit 38 last season. Trump to sign executive order creating task force for 2028 Los Angeles Olympics
President Trump will sign an executive order Tuesday creating a task force to oversee the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, and he's putting himself in charge of it, the White House confirmed Monday. Reuters news service first reported the task force, which it said would work on security, transportation and visa processing. California Gov. Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass — both of whom have a contentious relationship with the president — have not yet responded to news of the task force. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement that Mr. Trump had been "instrumental in securing America's bid to host the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles," and he "considers it a great honor to oversee this global sporting spectacle in his second term." Casey Wasserman, the chair and president of the LA Olympics said in a statement, "On behalf of LA28, I want to express our deep appreciation to President Trump and his Administration for their leadership and unwavering support as we prepare to deliver the largest and most ambitious Olympic and Paralympic Games ever hosted in the United States." He added that since LA had won its bid to host the Olympics in 2028, "President Trump has consistently recognized the magnitude of our responsibility in welcoming the world to Los Angeles," and he praised the creation of the task force. In Feburary, Mr. Trump signed an executive order directing the office of the secretary of state and homeland security secretary to "review and adjust" policies permitting transgender athletes and issue guidance to try to prevent them from entering the U.S. The order also directed the secretary of state to press the International Olympic Committee to stop transgender athletes from competing in women's sporting events. Mr. Trump also chairs a federal task force to oversee preparations for the 2026 World Cup, which the United States, Canada and Mexico will host jointly. The Trump-backed One Big Beautiful Bill Act sets aside $1 billion in federal funding to pay for security and planning for the Olympics, plus $625 million for World Cup security.

The Twins traded nearly half of their MLB roster at last week's trade deadline, but if it weren't for the Carlos Correa deal, pitcher Griffin Jax likely would have stayed put. 4 Griffin Jax was a last-minute addition to the Twins' fire sale at the trade deadline as he requested a deal right after Carlos Correa was moved. AP Once Correa was moved, Jax knew it was time to go and immediately put in a trade request of his own, which wound up landing him with the Rays. According to The Athletic, Jax had a confrontation in the dugout with Twins manager Rocco Baldelli late in Wednesday's loss to the Boston Red Sox, which Correa tried to mediate. 4 Carlos Correa reunited with the Astros at the trade deadline, waiving his no-trade clause to do so.
