Gun for hire: what does Denis Villeneuve joining as director tell us about the new James Bond?

The Guardian26-06-2025
At last. Something. Something has emerged from the vast opaque corporate entity that is Amazon Prime, which swallowed up the James Bond brand from Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli – the latter being reportedly discontented (though presumably very much richer).
White smoke has emerged from the funnel marked 'director' – though still nothing from the funnel marked 'star' – and it's a really big hitter. Denis Villeneuve is the Canadian film-maker who gave us the excellent science-fiction movies Arrival, Blade Runner 2049 and Dune Parts One and Two, and has demonstrated a real flair for big-budget action thrillers in Sicario and Prisoners, with plenty of the ambient sexiness in hardware and spectacle. (Perhaps Villeneuve will now get the ultimate corporate blessing of being a last-minute wedding guest at the Bezos wedding in Venice this weekend, precisely the sort of event that tends to feature as a Bond film opening scene, to be disrupted by helicopter attack, explosion, kidnapping etc. Mr Bezos himself needs a white persian cat on his lap to stroke.)
Villeneuve is much more than a safe pair of hands or a technical director who can be relied upon to do what the suits tell him; he is an alpha-grade auteur in the same league as Christopher Nolan and so his presence will reassure the fanbase with mixed feelings about the Amazon sale. The message is that, yes, Amazon is still thinking big and that the future Bond will be primarily up there on the big screen where Villeneuve has made his reputation and not simply on the smaller screens where long-form streaming content is reportedly going to be spun off: The Adventures of Moneypenny, The Prequel Adventures of M etc etc. (Although these are surely in development.)
But even given that Villeneuve is in place and he can work perfectly happily with James Norton or Regé-Jean Page or Henry Golding or Tom Hiddleston … what about the writing? When Danny Boyle was temporarily and unhappily brought on as director in 2018, the problem was that he had his own very specific creative vision as regards story, wishing to work in tandem with his own longtime collaborator, the screenwriter John Hodge. But their ideas wouldn't fly with Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli who had their own trusted writers, Bond script veterans Neal Purvis and Robert Wade who had a track record of getting the goose to lay the golden egg as regular as clockwork.
Who will Villeneuve want to work with? He co-wrote with Jon Spaihts on Dune, with Hampton Fancher and Michael Green on Blade Runner 2049, with Eric Heisserer on Arrival and with Taylor Sheridan on Sicario – on the face of it, he has no sustained partnership in the way Boyle had with Hodge and so he is perhaps not yet married to any high-concept visionary plans, which are going to go over badly when he presents them to Amazon. My guess is that, among these existing writers, he might more instinctively want to work with Sheridan who has certainly shown he can deliver action, thriller-drama and unresolved sexual tension on the 'secular' level outside science fiction.
But basically, yes, Denis Villeneuve is very good news for Bond: a smart, capable director who is going to produce the bangs for Amazon's buck and a witty, involving story for the fans.

Condé Nast raises eyebrows with barebones post for Anna Wintour's Vogue job on LinkedIn: ‘Hiring a head of editorial'

It's now been a week since legendary American Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour shockingly announced that she was stepping down and seeking a replacement to fill her Manolo Blahnik snakeskin boots. While Wintour has noted that she will remain as Chief Content Officer for Condé Nast and Global Editorial Director of Vogue, speculation has run wild over who will take over her day-to-day duties at the U.S. publication. Remarkably, as the names of potential successors continue to be debated, the company has also publicly announced the listing for a new Head of Editorial Content at American Vogue on the job-hunting social media site LinkedIn. 'Condé Nast is hiring a Head of Editorial Content for U.S Vogue,' the bare-bones LinkedIn post, which was first listed earlier this week, reads. 'If you are interested, please reach out by email with your resume to condenast@ Though it is now a generally accepted practice for media companies to post their openings – even for top editorial positions – on LinkedIn, the fact that Condé Nast is doing that to find a replacement for Wintour seems noteworthy, at least on the surface. It may also suggest that the fashion giant may not have actually whittled down the list of candidates to fill that position and is now casting a wider net. At the same time, the company hasn't made an official job listing on LinkedIn; instead, it has merely noted that the position is open and provided an email address to express interest. Still, Conde's method for looking to replace the driving force behind the Met Gala has led to eyebrows being raised. 'Applying for Anna Wintour's old job through LinkedIn is so based,' one LinkedIn user noted, while another snarked: 'crying this was posted on LinkedIn.' Meanwhile, despite the LinkedIn listing, a bevy of names at both Conde Nast and abroad have been tossed around as the next face of the magazine that Wintour turned into a fashion powerhouse. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the betting favorite to land the job is Architectural Design editor Amy Astley. 'Simply put, she's been killing it at AD, showcasing the homes of Hollywood A-listers, a list that recently includes Kendall Jenner, Michael Shannon and Lenny Kravitz,' THR noted, adding: 'The job feels like Astley's if she wants it.' Others who have been floated as taking the mantle are Vogue fashion director Tonne Goodman, British Vogue head of editorial content Chioma Nnadi, The Cut's editor-in-chief Lindsay Peoples Wagner, and Instagram director of fashion partnerships Eva Chen. The stunning revelation from Wintour, meanwhile, left many of her employees in a state of shock last week. After the 75-year-old – who was the inspiration for the diabolical lead character of The Devil Wears Prada – shared the news in a staff meeting, one employee told The Daily Mail: It was like finding out that God is stepping down from being God.

A timeline of the rise of Sean 'Diddy' Combs and his legal troubles

For more than two decades, Sean 'Diddy' Combs was one of hip-hop's most nimble entrepreneurs, spinning his hitmaking talents into a broad business empire that included a record label, a fashion brand, a TV network, deals with liquor companies and a key role in a reality TV show. Then he was charged with forcing, threatening and manipulating two ex-girlfriends into drug-fueled sex marathons, with assistance from a network of associates. Combs denied the allegations and went to trial in a high-stakes federal sex crimes and racketeering case. The trial ended Wednesday with a verdict that his attorneys called a victory: Combs was convicted of prostitution-related offenses but acquitted of higher-level charges of racketeering and sex trafficking. Here is a timeline of major events in his life story: 1990-1999 1990: Combs, then a student at Howard University, gets his start in the music business with an internship at Uptown Records in New York. Dec. 28, 1991: Nine people die at a celebrity basketball game promoted by Combs and the rapper Heavy D when thousands of fans try to get into a gym at the City College of New York. A mayoral report lays part of the blame for the catastrophe on poor planning by Combs. 1992: Combs is one of the executive producers on Mary J. Blige's debut album, 'What's the 411?" 1993: After being fired by Uptown, Combs establishes his own label, Bad Boy, which quickly cuts a lucrative deal with Arista Records. 1994: Bad Boy releases Notorious B.I.G.'s album 'Ready to Die." Two months later, Tupac Shakur survives a shooting in New York and accuses Combs and Biggie of having prior knowledge of the attack, which they deny. Shakur was later killed in a 1996 shooting in Las Vegas. 1996: Combs is convicted of criminal mischief after he allegedly threatened a photographer with a gun. 1997: Biggie is killed in Los Angeles. Combs, then known as Puff Daddy, releases 'I'll be Missing You' in honor of his dead star. 1998: Combs wins two Grammys, one for best rap album for his debut 'No Way Out' and another for best rap performance by a duo or group for 'I'll Be Missing You' with Faith Evans. Also that year, Combs' Sean John fashion line is founded. April 16, 1999: Combs and his bodyguards are charged with attacking Interscope Records music executive Steve Stoute in his New York office in a dispute over a music video. Combs is sentenced to an anger management course. Dec. 27, 1999: Combs is arrested on gun possession charges after he and his girlfriend at the time, Jennifer Lopez, fled a shooting that wounded three people at a New York City nightclub. Some witnesses tell police Combs was among the people shooting in the club. He is later charged with offering his driver $50,000 to claim ownership of the 9 mm handgun found in his car. 2001-2008 March 17, 2001: Combs is acquitted of all charges related to the nightclub shooting. One of his rap protégés, Jamal 'Shyne' Barrow, is convicted in the shooting and serves nearly nine years in prison. Two weeks after the trial, Combs announces he wants to be known as P. Diddy. (Barrow also later changed his name, to Moses Barrow, and became a parliamentarian in his native Belize). 2002: Combs becomes the producer and star of 'Making the Band,' a talent search TV show. Feb. 1, 2004: Combs performs at the Super Bowl halftime show along with Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake and others. A week later, Combs, Nelly and Murphy Lee win a Grammy for best rap performance by a duo or group for 'Shake Ya Tailfeather.' April 2004: Combs makes his Broadway acting debut in 'A Raisin in the Sun.' 2005: Combs announces he is changing his stage name to Diddy, getting rid of the P. March 2008: Combs settles a lawsuit brought by a man who claims Combs punched him after a post-Oscar party outside a Hollywood hotel the previous year. In May, Combs is honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. 2015-2022 2015: Combs is arrested after a confrontation on the campus of UCLA, where one of his sons played football. Assault charges are later dropped. 2016: Combs launches a Harlem charter school, the Capital Preparatory School. Also that year, he announces he is donating $1 million to Howard University. 2017: Combs is named the top earner on Forbes' list of the 100 highest-paid celebrities, which says he brought in $130 million in a single year. 2018: Kim Porter, Combs' former girlfriend and the mother of three of his children, dies from pneumonia at age 47. 2022: Combs receives a lifetime honor at the BET Awards. 2023-2025 Sept. 15, 2023: Combs releases 'The Love Album — Off the Grid,' his first solo studio project since 2006's chart-topping 'Press Play.' Nov. 16, 2023: R&B singer Cassie sues Combs, alleging that during their decade-plus as a couple, he subjected her to abuse, including beatings and rape. A day later, the lawsuit is settled under undisclosed terms. Combs, through his attorney, denies the accusations. Nov. 23, 2023: Two more women accuse Combs of sexual abuse in lawsuits. Combs' attorneys call the allegations false. Dozens of additional lawsuits follow by women and men who accuse Combs of rape, sexual assault and other attacks. Plaintiffs include singer Dawn Richard, a 'Making the Band' contestant who alleged years of psychological and physical abuse. Combs denies all the allegations. March 25, 2024: Federal agents search Combs' homes in Los Angeles and Miami Beach, Florida. May 17, 2024: CNN airs video that shows Combs attacking and beating Cassie in a Los Angeles hotel hallway in 2016. Two days later, Combs posts videos on social media apologizing for the assault. Sept. 16, 2024: Combs is arrested at his Manhattan hotel. A federal sex trafficking and racketeering indictment unsealed the next day accuses him of using his business empire to coerce women into participating in sexual performances. Combs denies the allegations. His attorney calls it an unjust prosecution of an 'imperfect person.' May 5, 2025: Jury selection begins for Combs' trial. May 12, 2025: A jury is selected and testimony begins in Combs' trial. June 30, 2025: Jury deliberations begin in Combs' trial. July 2, 2025: The jury convicts Combs of two counts of a prostitution-related offense but acquits him of higher-level charges of racketeering and sex trafficking. The outcome significantly reduces the rap mogul's potential prison sentence, which a judge will determine in the months to come. His lawyers unsuccessfully ask for him to be released on bond in the meantime. Combs is visibly relieved by the verdict, and his lead lawyer calls it "a victory of all victories.'

Charlize Theron, 49, details raunchy one-night stand with a 26-year-old in racy interview about her sex life

Charlize Theron revealed she's currently having the 'amazing' sex at age 49. The Oscar winner - who recently called out Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez for their over-the-top Venetian wedding - said she is having sex with a 26-year-old in a candid interview for the Call Her Daddy podcast. 'I've probably had three one-night stands in my entire life. But I did just recently f*** a 26-year-old and it was really f*****g amazing,' Charlize said. The mom of two added: 'I've never done that. And I was like, 'Oh, this is great. OK.' Charlize said that she is 'having the kind of sex I never had in my twenties or in my thirties.' 'That part has been really exciting. But I'm not missing a relationship. I'm not missing the partnership that I think you miss when you're me,' she said. When host Alex Cooper joked that the mystery 26-year-old man is probably walking different today knowing he was intimate with the Oscar winning actress. 'I will just say this, like I wish that, this goes back to, I think this is kind of like a thread throughout our conversation. Women who come across as confident, women who come across as outspoken, ones that wouldn't speak up for themselves tend to also be in bed, people who want to please males,' Charlize said. 'Like, and I have found this in my experiences with talking to other women about this. Isn't it strange? We should be the ones that are like, 'F**k you. I'm gonna have an orgasm.' And yet I, my whole life, was so concerned about...' Alex agreed: 'Same.' Charlize continued: Okay, so my advice would be this. Don't f*****g do that for two reasons. You're gonna have better orgasms and guess what? Your man's gonna like that.' She added that she 'found this freedom' in her forties. The star's exes include Stuart Townsend, whom she dated for eight years until 2009, as well as Sean Penn, Craig Bierko, Stephan Jenkins and Alex Dimitrijevic. Charlize is mom to two daughters: Jackson, 14, and August, eight. When asked about the next chapter of her life, the star said her focus is her children. 'I love my f*****g kids so much that they can never know 'cause I can't imagine my life without them and the idea of them not being in my f*****g house scares me enough to be like, 'Who is the sad man that I'm gonna f*****g catch in six years' and be like, 'You can have my whole closet. Just don't let me be alone in this house.'' 'Aside from thinking about that, I don't know, because work feels really satisfying. I really feel so blessed and so lucky that I get to do something every single day that I love that doesn't feel like work. I'm glad that I get to show my kids what that looks like.' 'To find something that you love that, if you can have a life where you don't feel like you're working, but you are working hard, that's a very rewarding life and not all of us get to have that, so if I can continue that and make sure that my kids are okay, like that's gonna be okay for me. I'm gonna be okay,' she noted. The Old Guard 2 star said she loves being able to parent her kids herself and have to run 'every f*****g thing by a guy.' 'I f*****g love that I don't have to do any of that stuff and my children, you know, we joke, listen. I think you tell this is how we raise my kids. We don't hide this s**t,' she said. 'I am raising, it looks from afar like I'm doing what I know, which is being a single mom because I was raised by pretty much a single mom, but I think I'm raising my kids as a single mom because of definitely avoidance of things that I know I don't want. Also understanding who I am fully and being honest with who I am and what I can give right now. And who I am is, at the time that I wanted to be a parent, was not somebody who should be having kids with another person,' she explained. Charlize said she's steered clear of dating and relationships, instead opting to focus on raising her children. 'This is like this moment in this time in my life now and I mean, I'll be honest. I have tried dating and I can tell that no man's moving into our house while my daughters are there and by the way, I don't think I can do it.' The actress added that she 'literally can't imagine a man moving into our house and me sharing my closet.' 'But then I imagine being an empty nester and how that part of my life will be, and by then feeling like maybe I will feel like I want to be in a relationship. There's this notion that somebody like me must be missing out on something and that people feel sorry for you somehow that you're missing out on love.' While she doesn't miss relationship, the movie star admitted to missing sex. 'It is the thing that you don't quite realize until you have kids and I'm not saying that it replaces one love or the other, but it is such a tremendous love that I do not miss love. You know, I might miss sex,' Charlize said. The award winning star said: 'I'm having the kind of sex I never had in my twenties or in my thirties, and so that part has been really exciting, but I'm not missing a relationship. I'm not missing the partnership that I think people think you miss when you're me.' She admitted to being on dating apps and that she isn't interesting in dating men in the industry. She revealed that her friends set her up on dates because 'apps are just horrible.' The screen star isn't interesting in marriage, due to her 'fear of not being able to get out of something.' 'Marriage is a long-term commitment and I think I want long-term commitment. I just don't need to get married. So I just wanna clarify that. I will tell you in all honesty and the work that I've done on myself, I think a lot of that also has to do with the fact that I have a tremendous fear of not being able to get out of something and that's again, me just understanding me, right?' 'And you know, now obviously by California laws, after seven years, you're in a f*****g marriage. Whether you walk down the aisle, sign a piece of paper, like it's 50-50 b***h. Like let's just be clear. So I am like, my semantics is like crazy, but I want, if I were to find a relationship, I would think of it as something that I'm aiming for for long term. I've never been somebody that really wants to like jump from one thing to another.' 'From the time that I was in relationships, I was in one relationship after another relationship after another relationship. And so when I earlier said, I'm having sex now for the first time, like I ever had before, is because I'm not in relationships. And it's not because I'm not, I don't wanna be in relationships, but I'm seeing things for what they are, right?' 'I'm not trying to force a circle into a square or whatever the f*****g American saying is, the peg and the hole and the, I can never say it right. But when I meet somebody, I can see where it's gonna go pretty quickly.' The South African-born actress also spoke out about an unnamed director that sexually harassed her during the early beginnings of her acting career. She went to his home for an audition, and she said deep down she felt like it wasn't right to audition at his home but since she was just starting her acting journey, she thought maybe it was a normal thing to audition at their house. Charlize said she still feels mad at herself for going and for not speaking up for herself at the time. She said she won't reveal their name because she doesn't want the story to be about him. The mysterious director reached out to her with a letter 'trying to explain his behavior' and that she 'must have misunderstood' what happened that night - after he heard her publicly talking about the incident. He 'panicked,' and wrote the letter, she said, because he was afraid she would name him. 'He started panicking. It was like waiting for me and I just realized like, I won't even say your name because you know, you're the scumbag. You know it's you and if anybody ever asks me about him, I would be completely honest and he knows that and I kind of like that. He's gotta be on a hot seat. He doesn't know when it's gonna come. I kind of like that a little more,' Charlize added. Call Her Daddy is available for streaming on all podcast platforms.
