‘Still finding ways to mess with me': Piastri laughs off Alpine jab after tense Austrian GP
The Australian made a comment after having to go off track to avoid Renault-owned Alpine's Argentine driver Franco Colapinto.
'Alpine still managed to find a way to (expletive) me over all these years later, huh?' he told race engineer Tom Stallard in an exchange not broadcast on television at the time.
Piastri told Reuters at a McLaren fan event in London's Trafalgar Square on Wednesday that his swearing had just been spur of the moment.
'It was just kind of a frustrating coincidence. My qualifying got hampered by an Alpine. I got impeded in the race by both the Alpines. So, it was kind of just a build-up of a few things,' he said. 'And it was more out of frustration.
'I still have a lot of friends at Alpine. A lot of people that I respect a lot.
'It was just kind of an ironic coincidence that the things that hampered me a bit in the weekend were all with Alpine. But, yeah – more just me trying to express my humour and frustration in the race.'
Piastri joined McLaren after being named by Alpine as their driver for 2023, only for the Australian to very publicly reject the seat with a statement that has become part of Formula One lore.
Then Alpine team boss Otmar Szafnauer questioned the driver's integrity and threatened legal action, but McLaren won easily when the matter went to the contract recognition board.
Alpine are now last in the championship and are still going through turmoil, while McLaren won the constructors' title last year and are runaway favourites again. — AFP

New-look Man United struggle for pace in goalless draw with Leeds, Amorim calls for improvement
LONDON, July 20 — Manchester United have plenty to improve on and need more pace in their midfield, manager Ruben Amorim said after the Premier League side began their pre-season preparations with a goalless draw against Leeds United. United had their worst-ever Premier League campaign in the 2024-25 season, finishing 15th in the standings, and also failed to qualify for the Champions League as they lost the Europa League final 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur. The Old Trafford side failed to impress in the draw with newly promoted Leeds in Stockholm on Saturday, despite the inclusion of new signing Matheus Cunha in the starting lineup. 'We suffered a little bit when we tried to press high, they kick the ball, win the second ball and they were a danger in that moment,' Amorim told MUTV. 'We have a lack of pace, especially in the middle of the park, and you can feel it, (so) that's hard to bring the ball (forward). But we created chances. We have a lot to do but it was a first test against a Premier League team, with two different teams, so it was a good test… 'As a group, we have a lot to improve, the speed of the game, all the details, so, yeah, we are going to improve.' United next play West Ham United at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 26. — Reuters

Snoop Dogg becomes co-owner of Championship club Swansea
Snoop Dogg made a surprise appearance on Swansea's social media channels last week modelling their new home jersey. (The Canadian Press/AP pic) LONDON : Snoop Dogg has become co-owner of Championship side Swansea City in an unlikely alliance between the world of rap and football, the Welsh club announced. The 53-year-old American star joins former Real Madrid stalwart and Croatia World Cup finalist Luka Modric in the club's ownership structure. Snoop Dogg made a surprise appearance on the club's social media channels last week modelling its new home jersey for the 2025-26 season and the club announced yesterday that he has become an investor. His involvement comes after American businessmen Brett Cravatt and Jason Cohen took over the club last November. Swansea will hope that Snoop Dogg, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, can use his 100 million-plus social media followers to boost the club's profile as they seek to return to the Premier League for the first time since they were relegated in 2018. Swansea's owners have said they want to generate greater revenue, which would allow them to invest more in new players under the profit and sustainability rules in British football. The 53-year-old rapper said on the club's website: 'My love of football is well known, but it feels special to me that I make my move into club ownership with Swansea City. 'The story of the club and the area really struck a chord with me. This is a proud, working class city and club. An underdog that bites back, just like me. 'I'm proud to be part of Swansea City.' Swansea announced in April that Modric, who this week joined AC Milan at the age of 39 after leaving Real Madrid, had acquired a stake in the club. 'To borrow a phrase from Snoop's back catalogue, this announcement is the next episode for Swansea City as we seek to create new opportunities to boost the club's reach and profile,' Swansea's owners said in a statement. 'Snoop's colossal global fanbase and audience will certainly help us do that, and he has made clear to us throughout this process just how excited he is at the prospect of joining the club. 'Snoop has openly shared his love of football and his desire to be involved in the game and we expect his involvement to support us putting as competitive a team as possible out on the field.' Swansea's Welsh rivals Wrexham have achieved a meteoric rise to the Championship – the second-tier of English football – since Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney purchased the club in 2020.

Usyk crushes Dubois in five rounds to unify heavyweight titles at Wembley
LONDON, July 20 — Oleksandr Usyk cemented his status as the outstanding heavyweight of his generation with an emphatic fifth-round knockout of Daniel Dubois in their undisputed world title bout at London's Wembley Stadium on Saturday. Victory saw Ukraine's Usyk extend his unbeaten professional record to 24 fights as the WBA, WBC and WBO champion added his British opponent's IBF belt to his collection. Usyk, now a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion – and three times in all after previously mastering the cruiserweight division – dominated the opening four rounds. And early in the fifth he dropped Dubois to the canvas. Moments later he finished the fight in decisive fashion after a trademark left hook left his British rival unable to beat the count one minute and 52 seconds into the round. It was the second time Usyk, at 38 some 11 years older than his opponent, had defeated Dubois following a ninth-round stoppage success in Krakow, Poland, in 2023, where the Briton was ruled to have landed an illegal low blow in the fifth round. Lennox Lewis, the last British boxer to be undisputed world champion in 1999, forecast before Saturday's fight that Usyk would face a vastly-improved Dubois, saying: 'Dubois was a baby in the sport and now he's a not going to see the same Daniel Dubois from 18 months ago.' But after Usyk was roared into the ring by a huge contingent of supporters, many of them waving Ukraine national flags in a 90,000 capacity crowd at Wembley, best known as the London base of England's national football team, it was largely one-way traffic as their hero conducted a ruthless masterclass against local favourite Dubois. '38 is a young guy, remember!,' Usyk told DAZN in the ring after dropping to his knees in celebration. '38 is only start! 'I want to say thank you to Jesus Christ. I want to say thank you to my team and Wembley, thank you so much! It's for the people. 'Nothing is next. It's enough, next, I don't know. I want to rest. My family, my wife, my children, I want to rest now. Two or three months, I want to just rest.' Maybe we have three choices, Derek Chisora and Anthony Joshua. Maybe Joseph Parker. Listen, I cannot now say because I want to go back home.' Dubois insisted he would return to the ring, saying: 'I have to commend him (Usyk) on the performance, I gave everything I had. Take no credit away from that man, I'll be back.' His trainer, Don Charles, added: 'We tried to get going, Dubois is a young will be back stronger. If you're going to lose, lose to someone like Usyk.' And promoter Frank Warren, a veteran of the British boxing scene, said: 'Usyk is a modern-day legend. In any generation he would be a great fighter. No complaints, the better man won on the night. Usyk, meanwhile, basked in the adulation following the latest dazzling victory of a career that has seen him emerge as a national hero in his war-torn homeland. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky was among the first to congratulate Usyk on his victory. 'An undisputed champion. A legend. One of our own,' Zelensky wrote on X. 'Thank you for the strength and inspiration you give to the whole country with every victory. Thank you for stepping into each fight with Ukraine in your heart.' — AFP
