Other airlines with notable findings included Alliance Air (57), Ghodawat Star (41), Quick Jet (35), IndiGo (23), and SpiceJet (14).According to the UN's International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) whose standards guide Indian audits, Level 1 findings indicate non-compliance that "lowers safety or seriously endangers safety."These could trigger immediate action - including suspension, restriction or even revocation of the airline's approvals.Level 2 findings are less critical but still safety-related - these are non-compliances by the airlines that "could lower or possibly hazard safety".Airlines are given up to three months to implement corrective actions, which may be extended if the regulator approves the action plan.Details of Air India's specific lapses in the latest aduit remain unclear. But a government report cited by Reuters highlights the airline's inadequate pilot training, use of unapproved simulators, and poor rostering. Officials flagged "recurrent training gaps" for some Boeing 787 and 777 pilots missing mandatory monitoring duties, according to Reuters.In a separate statement the DGCA said that it conducted regular audits under its 'Annual Surveillance Plan' to identify safety gaps and drive improvements. Based on ICAO standards and global best practices, these audits "ensure compliance" and enhance airline operations across the board, the regulator said."It should be emphasised that, for airlines with extensive operations and large fleet sizes, a higher number of audit findings is entirely normal," the regulator added. "The quantum and scale of their activities mean that such observations reflect the breadth and depth of their operations rather than any unusual lapse. Globally, aviation regulators routinely encounter similar patterns with major carriers due to the diversity and intensity of their undertakings."Earlier this month Reuters reported that the aviation watchdog had reprimanded Air India's budget carrier in March for delaying mandatory engine part replacements on an Airbus A320 and falsifying records to show compliance.Air India Express told the news agency it acknowledged the error to DGCA and undertook "remedial action and preventive measures".In a recent interview with the BBC, Faiz Ahmed Kidwai, the DGCA chief, said the information in this case came through "self-reporting by the airline"."I would not condone it [the lapses]. But [at least] we have started getting these reports. This came from the airline. Action has been taken in this case. In our audits we have mandated our people to be more alert and see whether there is any lapse and bring it to our attention," he said. "India's skies have always been safe." Citing ICAO data, Mr Kidwai noted India consistently outperforms the global average for accidents per million flights.He said, "Only twice between 2010 and 2024 did we exceed the global average - both years with major accidents."In August 2020, Air India Express Flight 1344 crashed after skidding off a rain-soaked tabletop runway in Kozhikode, killing 21 people. A decade earlier, in May 2010, Flight 812 from Dubai overshot the runway in Mangalore and plunged into a gorge, leaving 158 dead. June's Air India crash was the third such accident in the country in 15 years.Since 2020, Indian domestic carriers have reported 2,461 technical faults, according to the federal civil aviation ministry data. IndiGo accounted for over half (1,288), followed by SpiceJet with 633, and Air India and its subsidiary Air India Express with 389 cases, as of January 2025."Reporting of snags by airlines has gone up. This is good," Mr Kidwai said."I wouldn't say I'm pleased about it. But I do see value in the growing culture of reporting [snags]. It's far better for every snag to be brought to the attention of the authorities than keeping quiet and operating the aircraft."

China flags concerns over potential security risks in Nvidia's H20 chips
BEIJING, July 31 (Reuters) - China raised concerns over potential security risks in Nvidia's (NVDA.O), opens new tab H20 artificial intelligence chip, casting uncertainty over the U.S. company's sales prospects in China weeks after a U.S. export ban was reversed. The Cyberspace Administration of China, the country's internet regulator, said it was concerned by a U.S. proposal for advanced chips sold abroad to be equipped with tracking and positioning functions. It said it had summoned Nvidia to a meeting on Thursday to explain whether its H20 AI chip had any backdoor security risks, as it was worried that Chinese user data and privacy rights could be affected. Nvidia did not immediately respond to a Reuters' request for comment. In May, U.S. senator Tom Cotton introduced a bill that would direct the Commerce Department to require location verification mechanisms for AI chips subject to export restrictions, to curb Chinese access to advanced U.S. semiconductor technology. Nvidia has been in the crosshairs of U.S.-China relations and China's move comes shortly after the U.S. this month reversed an April ban on Nvidia selling the H20 chip to China. The company developed the H20 chip for the Chinese market after the U.S. imposed export restrictions on advanced AI chips in late 2023. Last month, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang embarked on a very public and effusive visit to China where he sought to demonstrate his commitment to the Chinese market, met with government officials and praised the country's AI advances. The CAC statement did not elaborate on what backdoor security risks there could be or say what the Chinese government was considering to do as a result. Nvidia's products are highly sought after not just by Chinese tech companies but also by Chinese military bodies, state-run AI research institutes and universities. The company placed an order for 300,000 H20 chipsets last week due to strong demand, Reuters reported. Chinese authorities and industry associations have in the past accused U.S. tech companies of posing security risks, with varying consequences. In early 2023, China barred key operators of the country's infrastructure from purchasing from Micron (MU.O), opens new tab, saying that a review it conducted had found that the U.S. memory chip maker's products posed serious security risks. Last year, an industry group, the Cybersecurity Association of China, called for Intel (INTC.O), opens new tab products sold in China to be subject to a security review, but Chinese regulators have not publicly responded. Nvidia is also facing an antitrust investigation in China. The State Administration for Market Regulation announced late last year it was investigating the chipmaker over suspected violations of the country's anti-monopoly law. The regulator said Nvidia was also suspected of violating commitments it made during its acquisition of Israeli chip designer Mellanox Technologies, under terms outlined in the regulator's 2020 conditional approval of that deal.

Indian rupee slumps on Trump tariff jolt, central bank likely cushions fall
MUMBAI, July 31 (Reuters) - The Indian rupee fell to an over five-month low on Thursday, hurt by U.S. President Donald Trump's threat of a 25% tariff on the Asian country's exports, and the central bank likely stepped in to arrest its fall towards a record low, traders said. The rupee slipped to 87.74 per U.S. dollar before paring losses to quote at 87.56 as of 11:30 a.m. IST, down 0.2% on the day. The currency, within touching distance of its all-time low of 87.95 hit in February, is down 2% so far this year, making it one of the worst Asian performers. On Wednesday, President Trump said the United States is still negotiating with India on trade after announcing earlier in the day that the U.S. would impose a 25% tariff and unspecified penalties on goods imported from the country starting Friday. The Indian government said it is studying the implications of Trump's announcements and added it remains dedicated to securing a fair trade deal. Analysts reckon that India-U.S. trade negotiations may yield a lower levy. "The key for markets and our forecast profile for INR is whether a trade deal between India and U.S. is delayed but not denied," Michael Wan, senior currency analyst at MUFG said in a note. ANZ said the uncertainty on trade is likely to keep the rupee under pressure and the Reserve Bank of India will likely step in to contain volatility, "if not aggressively defend a level for long." India's equity benchmarks, the BSE Sensex (.BSESN), opens new tab and Nifty 50 (.NSEI), opens new tab, fell about 0.4% each on the day. Meanwhile, dollar-rupee forward premiums declined, with traders pointing to diminished odds of rate cuts by the Federal Reserve and mid-to-far tenor dollar-rupee buy/sell swaps conducted by state-run banks.

Unilever's sales growth beats estimates as North America, Europe shines
July 31 (Reuters) - Dove soap maker Unilever (ULVR.L), opens new tab beat market expectations for second-quarter underlying sales growth on Thursday due to robust demand in North America and Europe, and kept its sales expectations for the full year. Unilever has made several organisational and operational changes over the past year to address underperformance and boost margins, including the planned spin-off of its ice cream business which makes Ben & Jerry's and Magnum, job cuts and the ouster of former CEO Hein Schumacher in February. The ice cream business, called The Magnum Ice Cream Company, is on track for a demerger in mid-November, the company said. "Looking ahead, our priorities are clear: more Beauty & Wellbeing and Personal Care; disproportionate investment in the U.S. and India; and, a sharper focus on premium segments and digital commerce," CEO Fernando Fernandez said in a statement. While the company maintained its 2025 sales forecast and highlighted areas of growth, a 50% drop in free cash flow from last year to 1.1 billion euros in the first half raises concerns about the financial strain caused by supply chain changes, tariff uncertainties, and costs associated with spinning off its ice cream division. The owner of brands such as Vaseline and Liquid I.V. electrolytes said the second half is expected to grow ahead of the first, with resilience in the North American and European markets and with India, China and Indonesia expected to improve. Unilever has previously said that the impact of U.S. tariffs was expected to be limited and manageable. The consumer goods company reported underlying sales growth of 3.8% for the three months ended June 30, compared with 3.6% expected by analysts in a company-compiled poll. It reported an underlying operating profit of 5.8 billion euros for the half-year, slightly ahead of market expectations of 5.7 billion euros.
