Proposed carbon tax not hindrance for investors, says PM Anwar
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he knew that the trend towards decarbonisation is strong and compelling.
'But I think we have to be very realistic. The proposed carbon tax should not be seen as too problematic at the expense of investing companies,' he said during a question and answer session at the Roundtable Meeting with Captains of Industry in Paris, the capital of France on Friday.
Also present were Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.
Anwar, who is here on a two-day official visit, said the implementation has to be done cautiously and gradually.
'We are finalising that in the next few months actually,' he said, adding that they are looking at sectors that are the biggest carbon emitters first.
Despite the palm oil industry being an important sector for Malaysia, Anwar said any new plantations on peat soil have been stopped due to its high carbon emissions.
The government is planning to introduce the carbon tax in 2026, specifically targeting the iron, steel and energy industries.
It is part of the government's broader strategy to promote the use of low-carbon technologies and meet emission reduction goals.
Industry leaders who attended the session with the Prime Minister praised the government and the country for providing a good investment climate in Malaysia.
On tourism, Anwar said the number of tourists from France visiting Malaysia has increased tremendously.
'We have direct flights from Paris now. You can swim the whole year due to our favourable climate,' he quipped, citing the newly introduced Kuala Lumpur-Paris route by Malaysia Airlines.
Anwar also assured French companies considering investments in Malaysia or the ASEAN region that both represent some of the fastest-growing and most dynamic economies in the world. — BERNAMA

Chelsea given huge fine for breach of financial rules
CHELSEA have been fined 31 million euros ($36.50 million) by UEFA for breaches of its financial rules, while Aston Villa, Barcelona and Olympique Lyonnais were also levied with large fines, UEFA announced on Friday. The punishments come with the potential for far harsher fines down the road, with Chelsea, who agreed to a four-year settlement with UEFA's Club Financial Control Body (CFCB), risking being hit with a further 60 million euros if they do not get their finances in order. Barcelona must pay a 15 million euro fine, but could potentially face 60 million in total, with UEFA fining Lyon 12.5 million and Aston Villa 11 million. Chelsea's fines were split into 20 million for not complying with the football earnings rule and 11 million for breaching the squad cost rule, while Aston Villa were fined five million and six million for their respective rule violations. The clubs are also subject to a restriction on the registration of new players on their List A for UEFA club competitions such as the Champions League and Europa League. The teams accepted settlement agreements which cover periods of two, three or four years, with the clubs' final targets to be fully compliant with the football earnings rule by the end of their specific settlement period. Additionally, Lyon agreed on an exclusion from the 2025/26 UEFA club competitions should the French authority (DNCG) confirm the club's relegation to Ligue 2. Chelsea sold their women's team for 235 million euros to a parent company, Blueco, which helped to balance their spending and avoid huge losses, despite their lavish spending in the transfer market under owner Todd Boehly. UEFA, however, refused to count the sale of the team as an asset. The club also sold two hotels to a sister company in a deal that appears to have helped the club to remain compliant with profitability and sustainability rules (PSR). Premier League clubs are not permitted to have losses of more than 105 million pounds ($143.29 million) over a three-year period.

Anwar to push inclusive trade, AI governance
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to deliver two country statements at the 17th BRICS Summit of Heads of State and Government, focusing on strengthening multilateralism, economic and financial affairs, and artificial intelligence (AI). Themed "Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance", the summit will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on July 6 and 7. Malaysia's Acting Head of Mission in Brazil, Datuk Mohammad Ali Selamat, said Anwar began his working visit to Rio de Janeiro yesterday and will remain there until Monday for the summit. He said Anwar's attendance follows an invitation from Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. "The prime minister will present Malaysia's perspective on the importance of reinforcing multilateralism and international cooperation in addressing global challenges, particularly in areas such as the economy, international trade and AI. "As the current Asean chair, Malaysia is promoting regional cooperation through digital transformation, AI governance and more inclusive trade," he said at an online press conference on Thursday. He said Anwar will focus on global health and climate change challenges, as well as efforts to address them through international cooperation, when delivering Malaysia's country statement during the environment, COP30, and global health sessions on the second day of the summit. "The prime minister will also highlight efforts to strengthen climate financing and ensure a just and sustainable transition," he said, adding that Anwar is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from BRICS member states and partner countries on the sidelines of the summit. He said Anwar's country statement reflects Malaysia's commitment to strengthening multilateralism and championing the voice and interests of developing nations, in line with the core objectives of BRICS. "As the Asean chair in 2025, Malaysia will strive to enhance cooperation between Asean and BRICS to boost regional economic collaboration, contributing to a collective effort towards a fairer and more sustainable global economy." He added that Malaysia's participation in the summit is in the capacity of a BRICS partner country and as the Asean chair, and that there is no clear direction yet regarding full membership in BRICS. "Full membership is a matter to be decided by consensus among BRICS member countries, and as of now, Malaysia has not reached that stage."

'I stressed the importance of this commitment,' said the Prime Minister, who met French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou here yesterday. It was reported that MAG ordered 20 A330neos and took out options for another 20 in 2022. Anwar said AirAsia also has confidence in French technology, as reflected in its commitment to acquiring several Airbus aircraft, a move that further strengthens aviation industry ties between the two nations. 'We discussed various strategic areas of cooperation, including high-value investments in aerospace, semiconductors and automotive, clean energy ventures, defence, education as well as technical and vocational training,' the Prime Minister said after the meeting. He added that Malaysia appreciates France's support in the country's energy transition efforts and economic transformation agenda, particularly through the active participation of firms such as ENGIE, Total and Thales. Anwar alexpressed confidence that Malaysia-France relations, with France being Malaysia's fourth-largest trading partner in the European Union, would continue to grow. 'I have extended an invitation to Prime Minister Bayrou to make an official visit to Malaysia to further deepen our strong ties,' he said. The letter of offer to Thales LAS, he added, will enhance Malaysia's airspace surveillance capabilities through two new long-range radars. 'As for the collaboration between Matrade and Business France, it will boost bilateral trade promotion across strategic sectors such as aerospace, renewable energy and the digital economy.' Earlier, Anwar was accorded an official ceremonial welcome at the Hotel National des Invalides. He was received by Minister of the Economy, Finance, and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty Eric Lombard. The national anthems of both countries were played before Anwar inspected the guard of honour. 'Honoured to receive an official ceremonial welcome from the Government of France, a meaningful and dignified gesture that reflects the longstanding friendship and mutual respect between Malaysia and France,' he said. As the world navigates an increasingly complex global landscape, Malaysia remains committed to working with partners such as France to champion multilateralism, reinforce peace and stability, and build a more just and sustainable future for all, Anwar added.
