Blue Jays Make Max Scherzer Decision Before White Sox Game
Future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer (thumb) has pitched just one game for the Toronto Blue Jays this season, and they still own the AL's second Wild Card spot through 75 games. There's no telling how far they'll rise once the three-time Cy Young Award winner is back at full strength.

Scherzer's lone appearance this year came back on March 29 when he allowed two runs in three innings to the Baltimore Orioles. The 40-year-old threw just 45 pitches before leaving with soreness in his right lat muscle that stemmed from his thumb soreness.
However, Scherzer is finally close to returning from the 60-day IL. Toronto manager John Schneider made a decision about the hurler's rehab before Saturday's bout with the Chicago White Sox, via MLB.com's Keegan Matheson.

"Max Scherzer is throwing his bullpen session tomorrow now, not today," Matheson reported.
"Schneider says the Blue Jays are 'feeling through it a bit' and just wanted to give him an extra day, which they have the option to do given how the rotation is set up next week," he continued.
Scherzer will likely pitch either Tuesday or Thursday against the Cleveland Guardians, via Matheson. The right-hander isn't ready for 100-pitch outings yet, but he can handle 75.

Scherzer signed a one-year, $15.5 million contract with the Blue Jays in February, and their rotation has been shorthanded since he went down in March.
Toronto is 1.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays for second place in the AL East and three games behind the New York Yankees for first.

But he's going to be out on a major league field and running around, not to the degree we're used to, but he'll be out there.' Robert, who turns 28 on Aug. 3, entered with a .206 batting average, 10 homers and 41 RBIs in 84 games. Robert felt the injury when he stole second in the ninth inning of Wednesday's 11-9 victory at Tampa Bay. Right tackle Jawaan Taylor returns to practice as Chiefs put pads on for first time in training camp
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs right tackle Jawaan Taylor made his training camp debut after missing their first four practices because of a knee injury, and he was right in the mix with the starters Sunday as they put on pads for the first time. Backup tight end Tre Watson, who also had been out with a groin injury, passed his physical and joined Taylor on the field. Taylor has started all 33 regular-season games he has played for Kansas City over the past two seasons. But his blocking metrics coupled with a propensity for penalties mean his job is far from secure. The Chiefs signed backup 49ers tackle Jaylon Moore to a two-year, $30 million deal and used their first-round draft pick on Ohio State standout Josh Simmons. After the first week of camp, Simmons appears to have the inside track on the left tackle job, which was a problem position for the Chiefs all of last season. So when Taylor returned, it was in a rotation with Moore for first-team snaps on Sunday. 'We're getting back in the swing. He hasn't done anything," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said of Taylor, who showed up on the injury report with knee trouble much of last season and had offseason surgery. 'But all three are kind of competing there.' Reid said he was pleased with the way Simmons looked in his first padded practice. There was some question about whether he would even be ready for camp after tearing his patellar tendon in a game with the Buckeyes last season. 'He did some good things. I wasn't focusing on him the whole time, but I thought he did some good things,' Reid said. 'He's a work in progress. He has to keep working. Young guy.' Cardinals lose starting cornerback Starling Thomas to torn ACL
Cardinals cornerback Starling Thomas suffered a serious knee injury during Friday's practice. Tests revealed that Thomas has a torn ACL, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. That almost certainly means he will miss the entire season. Originally an undrafted rookie out of UAB, Thomas spent training camp with the Lions in 2023 but didn't make their roster. The Cardinals claimed him on waivers and he played surprisingly well as a rookie and even better in his second season in 2024. Last year Thomas played in all 17 games, with 15 starts, and played the most snaps of any cornerback on the team. The Cardinals may now be in the market to pick up another cornerback, as they were counting on Thomas to play a big role this year. He's a big loss.
