Female jockey dies aged 43 after being kicked in head by horse
The horse racing world is heartbroken following the death of ex-jockey Peta Tait who died aged 43 after being kicked in the head by a horse.
A statement from her employers on Wednesday read: "It is with tremendous sadness that Busuttin Racing confirm the passing of much loved team member Peta Tait following a tragic accident at our Cranbourne stable yesterday morning.
"At this time our thoughts are with those nearest and dearest to Peta, her immediate family and many friends, both inside and outside of the racing industry, as well as her team of colleagues of whom she had maintained strong personal and professional relationships.
"Peta was an incredible person who was dedicated to her role and will leave a long-standing legacy. We are heartbroken by her loss" reports the Mirror.
Jockey Daniel Moor wrote on X: "It's difficult to find the words to describe a one in a million person, but that's exactly who Peta was. So dedicated to her job and always so helpful. Constantly putting others before herself. She will be very sadly missed."
Tait was working as a stable hand at Cranbourne Training Centre in south-east Melbourne on Tuesday when the tragic incident occurred. She was struck on the head at around 7:30am and paramedics arrived around 20 minutes later to perform CPR. They were unfortunately unable to save her.

A statement from Victoria Police read: " Police will prepare a report for the coroner following the death of a woman in Cranbourne on 1 July. Emergency services were called to a training facility on Cemetery Road just after 7.30am following reports a woman had been kicked by a horse in stables.
"CPR was performed but the yet to be formally identified woman has died at the scene. The death is not being treat as suspicious and WorkSafe has been notified."
Racing Victoria CEO Aaron Morrison also paid tribute to Tait. "On behalf of the Victorian racing industry, I would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to Peta's family, friends and work colleagues on the tragic news of her passing," Morrison said.
"This terrible accident serves as an untimely reminder of the thousands of unsung heroes working in stables each day to provide the best possible care to our racehorses.
"Like all within our industry, Peta loved horses and she forged a career working with them, helping numerous trainers prepare their horses as a trackwork rider or strapping them on raceday.
"She was also a popular member of the picnic racing circuit, enjoying the unique thrill of competing in races as an amateur jockey and doing so with success."
Tait rode 48 winners between 1998 and 2019 as a jocket before becoming involved as a stable hand. She was employed by trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young.

Six-year-old Ella and her mum Natalie, a well-known nurse, were killed in the collision with a van on Wednesday. A young nurse and her six-year-old daughter have tragically died following a two-vehicle crash. Natalie McLaughlin and her daughter Ella, from Carndonagh in Donegal were in a car which collided with a van on the R240 at Glentogher, at 6.30pm on Wednesday, July 2. Ella was sadly pronounced dead at the scene, with her parents and younger sister rushed to hospital across the border in Derry. Mum-of-two Natalie, who was in her 20s, was initially taken to Altnagelvin Hospital, but later transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, where she died from her injuries on Thursday afternoon. Her husband Tyrone is still in a serious condition, but his injuries are not said to be life-threatening. Their other daughter Rhea Rose, two, was also transferred to Belfast for specialist treatment, but is also understood to not have life-threatening injuries. The van driver, who is in his late teens, was treated at the scene for non-serious injuries, the Mirror reports. Natalie worked as a nurse at a GP practice in Carndonagh, having started her career as a registered nurse just three years ago. He said: "Words fall short at this time, what can anybody say? They are such a lovely family and so well respected in our local community. It's just devastating. The loss of anybody on our roads is difficult for any community to take. "But the loss of a mother and daughter, particularly given the fact that they are so young, is even more poignant and more difficult to accept. People are just numb and there is very little I can add to that other than to keep them all in our thoughts and prayers." Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. The road was closed for examination by a forensics team, but later reopened on Thursday. Officers are appealing for any witnesses to get in touch. Inspector Sean McDaid, Head of the Garda Traffic Corps in Co Donegal, has asked any motorists travelling in the area at the time of the crash who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) to pass it on to investigating Gardaí.

Former Glasgow Lord Provost banned from approaching ex-partner
Philip Braat was also today ordered to carry out 60 hours of unpaid work and fined £840. The 49-year-old, of the city's Broomhill, was sentenced at Glasgow Sheriff Court. He had earlier pleaded guilty to a single charge of stalking. The court heard how he had contacted the woman 122 times between July and September 2024. The pair started dating in 2021 and went on to live together. The woman told Braat that she was ending the relationship in July 2024. She received an email the next day from the councillor which included an apparent resignation letter to his employer sent from his professional account. Fiscal Paige Phillips said: "The woman thought that this was fake and to get her attention as well as to make her feel guilty." She later contacted Braat to emphasise the end of their relationship during a "very emotional and distressing" call. The woman also stated that she did not love him and wanted to get on with her life. He said: "You better visit my parents and you better keep my legacy alive." The woman believed that this was in reference to Braat ending his life and he said: "I don't want to live without you." When asked if it was in reference to ending his life, Braat replied: "Maybe." Between July and September, the woman received 18 emails, 51 Instagram messages, 15 text messages, 37 WhatsApp messages and a LinkedIn message. Some of the emails contained "goodbye" letters to the woman and Braat's own family. The woman contacted the police and Braat was traced to his parents' address where he was found "safe and well." Braat's LinkedIn message, congratulating her on a professional award she received resulted in the woman going to the police. She stated that the messages were not nasty but there was "no escape" from Braat and she could "not cope any longer." Braat gave a "no comment" interview to police after his arrest. Solicitor advocate Andrew Seggie, defending, told the court: "He was at a low point and felt suicidal and his focus was on winning the woman back during the period of the charge. "He was the Lord Provost during the pandemic and he said he felt additional pressure to assist those who lost loved ones as a result of the pandemic together with his own constituents. "He was trying to manage this and juggle his own family issues and the end of the relationship caused him to suffer a mental health breakdown during this period." Sheriff Owen Mullan today imposed the non harassment order banning Braat from approaching or contacting the woman for the next five years. The unpaid work must be completed within six months. Sheriff Mullan said Braat's behaviour had 'overstepped the mark' and that it would have been 'stressful' for the woman. Braat has represented the Anderston/City/Yorkhill ward since 2007 and is subject to an investigation by Scottish Labour. Braat was the deputy Lord Provost in 2017 before taking on the senior role in 2020 until 2022. He left the position after the 2019 resignation of Eva Bolander amid criticism of her expenses claims. Braat was also the former convener of the Strathclyde Police Authority (SPA) and represented Glasgow at COP26. Braat was a member of the Law Society of Scotland, an honorary captain in the Royal Navy Reserves, and a member of the Glasgow Tree Lovers' Society.

Marsh, 60, was also found in possession of several sexualised videos he had received from a vulnerable 12-year-old autistic child after making contact with her over the internet. Marsh pleaded guilty to two offences involving child abuse committed between 2018 and 2024 when he appeared in the dock at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Thursday. The court was told four mobiles and an electronic tablet contained a total of 2448 images and videos with hundreds rated at Category A - the worst end of the spectrum. The fiscal depute said the total run time of the videos was more than four hours and the material involved the sexual abuse of children aged between two and 15-years-old. Mr Miller told the court officers also discovered Snapchat logs detailing the sexual contact Marsh had with a 12-year-old child who was described as being 'vulnerable' and suffering from autism. Marsh was subsequently found to be in possession of videos of the child engaging in solo sexual activity that she had sent him but he denied sending images of himself back to the victim. Defence agent Steven Donald said he would reserve his mitigation to the sentencing hearing. Sheriff Fergus Thomson agreed to release Marsh on bail and placed him on the sex offenders register on an interim basis. The sheriff also said Marsh's name will be passed on to Scottish Ministers for inclusion on the list of those banned from working with children and vulnerable adults in the future. Marsh pleaded guilty to possessing indecent images of children at his home between October 7, 2018 and October 6 last year. He also admitted to intentionally causing a child, who had not attained the age of 13, to participate in sexual activity and did request images of her and send them to him between January 3 and October 28, 2021.
