Israel orders new evacuation in Deir al-Balah as Gaza offensive expands

Saudi Gazette4 days ago
GAZA — The Israeli army on Sunday issued a fresh evacuation order for residents in the southwestern parts of Deir al-Balah, as it intensified its military campaign in central Gaza.
Army spokesperson Avichay Adraee announced that civilians sheltering in residential blocks between numbers 130 and 2351 — including those in tents — must evacuate the area and move south toward the coastal zone of al-Mawasi.
The designated 'safe zone' of al-Mawasi has grown increasingly overcrowded, with tens of thousands of displaced Palestinians living in extreme and deteriorating conditions.
Despite repeated Israeli military assurances, the area has been bombed multiple times throughout the war, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of civilians.
Israel's ongoing military offensive in Gaza, which began on Oct. 7, 2023, has so far killed nearly 59,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, according to Gaza health authorities.
The bombing campaign has devastated the enclave's infrastructure, pushed the population to the brink of famine, and caused widespread outbreaks of disease.Meanwhile, talks aimed at reaching a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas are ongoing in Doha, Qatar. Mediators are attempting to bridge wide gaps on core issues including the release of hostages, the scope of military withdrawal, and humanitarian access. — Agencies

Gaza staff face starvation: Joint statement from AFP, AP, BBC, Reuters

Four leading news organizations said Thursday their journalists in Gaza are facing the threat of starvation as the Israeli assault on Gaza grinds on, while top US envoy Steve Witkoff was to meet with key negotiators from the Middle East for talks on the latest ceasefire proposal and the release of hostages. 'We are desperately concerned for our journalists in Gaza, who are increasingly unable to feed themselves and their families,' said a joint statement by The Associated Press, Agence France-Presse, Reuters and the BBC. 'For many months, these independent journalists have been the world's eyes and ears on the ground in Gaza. They are now facing the same dire circumstances as those they are covering.' The statement called on Israel to allow journalists in and out of Gaza and allow adequate food supplies into the territory. The statement came a day after more than 100 charity and human rights groups said that Israel's blockade and ongoing military offensive are pushing Palestinians in the Gaza Strip toward starvation. Also Thursday, Hamas confirmed it had sent its latest ceasefire proposal to Israel, with an Israeli official calling it 'workable,' although no details were provided. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on record. Israel's war in Gaza, launched in response to Hamas' Oct. 7, 2023, attack, has killed more than 59,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Its count doesn't distinguish between militants and civilians, but the ministry says that more than half of the dead are women and children.

Saudi Arabia, Arab and Islamic nations condemn "Israeli sovereignty" move in West Bank

Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — Saudi Arabia, alongside key Arab and Islamic countries, has strongly condemned the Israeli Knesset's recent declaration calling for the imposition of so-called "Israeli sovereignty" over the occupied West Bank, denouncing it as a blatant and unacceptable violation of international law. In a joint statement issued on Thursday by Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the condemnation was supported by Bahrain, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Nigeria, Palestine, Qatar, Türkiye, the United Arab Emirates, the League of Arab States, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. The group of nations described the Israeli move as a 'flagrant breach' of multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions, including Resolutions 242 (1967), 338 (1973), and 2334 (2016). All these resolutions reject the legitimacy of the Israeli occupation and settlement activity in Palestinian territories occupied since 1967. The joint statement reaffirmed that Israel holds no sovereignty over the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, which was described as an integral part of the Palestinian state. The declaration further emphasized that the unilateral Israeli action has no legal effect and only serves to escalate tensions in the region—already worsened by ongoing Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip and the resulting humanitarian crisis. The signatories called on the international community, particularly the UN Security Council and other relevant bodies, to uphold their legal and moral responsibilities by acting to halt Israel's illegal policies, including attempts to impose a fait accompli by force. Such actions, they warned, jeopardize the prospect of a just and lasting peace, and undermine the viability of the two-state solution. Concluding the statement, the parties reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to the establishment of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with international law and the Arab Peace Initiative.
