It once boasted 120,000 seats but limitations in its current design mean it cannot be expanded beyond a 70,000 capacity.
Architects Populous, who designed Wembley and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, have been consulted over an expansion.
Benfica currently fill out their 68,100 seats and they plan to add a fourth level to the stadium.
Populous have also been brought in to help with designs to build a 10,000-capacity multi-purpose indoor arena.

It will contain two indoor sports halls, with capacities of 2,500 and 1,500 respectively, a swimming pool as well as a 500-seat theatre and a rooftop football pitch.
A fan plaza with space for 10,000 supporters will be built along with food and drink outlets, as well as shops and restaurants.
But some within the club want a return to a 120,000-seat venue, including vice-president Rui Passo.
He said: 'We cannot go beyond 70,000 in this stadium, for reasons of safety, comfort and regulation. We have to start thinking about a new stadium.

'There are two sports in which we want to be stronger, women's football and rugby.
'This stadium can be the home of women's football and rugby. I want to dream of crowds of 40, 50 and 60 thousand people watching rugby and women's football matches. We must start dreaming about a new stadium.

'We have full boxes with waiting lists. We have executive seats with waiting lists. We have red pass seats with a huge waiting list. Roughly speaking, it is not difficult to increase the number of red pass seats from 45,000 to 70,000, executive seats from 5,000 to 10,000 and boxes from 150 to 300.
'We have a waiting list to buy these seats (almost 17,000 for the red pass). It is quite possible to start thinking seriously about a project like this.'
Former club president Luís Filipe Vieira, who stepped down in 2021 after being arrested on suspicion of a breach of trust against Benfica, also dreams of a 120,000 capacity venue.
According to Correio da Manha, Vieira plans to use this idea as a cornerstone of his bid to become club president again in the October elections, and he has already consulted an architect about the plans.

Brendan Rodgers blows Celtic transfer myth out the water as high priced trio get bullish defence
The Hoops boss is desperately seeking reinforcements as the clock ticks towards flag day next weekend Brendan Rodgers insists he is in charge of ALL Celtic signings – and told fans he understands the punters itching for more new arrivals, writes Michael Gannon in Italy. The Hoops boss is chasing targets to strengthen his first team and knows the clock is ticking towards the start of the new Premiership season. But Rodgers also shot down suggestions of a difference between club signings and his own top targets. The Irishman described new recruits Hayato Inamura and Shin Yamada as part of the club's long term strategy, along with youngster Callum Osmand. But Rodgers is adamant he has the full final say over any players coming in while underlining his desire to land first-team-ready stars. He said: "It's pretty straightforward. There will be players within our recruitment team that are not just for now but for the future. 'Clearly, I will look at those players and assess, and see if those players can come in and play. Then there will be other players we specifically need. It's still very much joined up. 'I suppose it's more around whether the players are for now or later. People know the model over a number of years. There are players who come in who are maybe not expected to hit the ground running, but some of them do. 'That's what I need to assess, those guys coming in. But I also need to win now, and we need to get those players in. Either way, I will be responsible for that. 'Club signings, with the greatest respect, I don't care where they come (from), I just need good players in the building who can help us win today, tomorrow and the next week. 'I've always developed players in my career, so I respect that side of it, but also the need for the present.' Rodgers can understand fans frustration with the Hoops desperately needing at least one winger and another striker ahead of the new campaign – and the Champions League qualifier on the horizon. He said: 'I respect what the supporters are – I want players in tomorrow. But I understand the market and what you need to do to bring a player in. 'It's not as easy as clicking your fingers. We all want them in at the start, absolutely, and none more so than the coach. 'But there is a middle and an end, and as long as you have them in by the end, it's such a long season, so I'm very hopeful we'll do that. 'I am, because there is a lot of hard work going on behind the scenes in terms of players. 'Of course, you look at our squad and you can see where there are needs for improvement. It's pretty clear. 'The market is difficult in terms of timings and everything else. On the same token, we are only 11 days away from the new season and we want to get players in as quickly as we can. 'If you are looking to bring in a player that will improve us, the other club is looking to maximise their assets as well.' Celtic have a pile of cash in the bank after the £17m sale of Nicholas Kuhn on top of impressive reserves. But Rodgers is not demanding a bumper war chest as he defended last summer's £26m trio of Arne Engels, Adam Idah and Auston Trusty. He said: 'There was a bit of focus around the players who came in last year and question marks around what they brought. 'For one, they didn't set the price. But, two, Celtic did as well as they've done for a decade and those guys really helped us. 'Trusty was outstanding in the Champions League. Engels, his running power, was really helpful for us, he's a young player who will get better. 'Idah scored over 20 goals and still has improvements to make. It depends on perspective. I felt we needed physicality and power for the Champions League and that really helped us. 'Those players have still more to develop. 'Whether a player costs £250,000 or £12m, I'm not really concerned. I've seen and worked with players who have cost more but others who have cost less but are much better players. 'I'm not really fixated on, 'I need £10m, £15m or whatever' – I just need quality players.' Rodgers' men will face Ajax in Como tonight but Hoops fans might need to wait to see Yamada in action, while Cameron Carter-Vickers and Alistair Johnston will get back on the pitch. The boss said: 'I'm not sure. Shin has obviously just come in. He's been with us for a few days and it's just assessing and we'll take it from there.' Brendan Rodgers insists he's fully responsible for EVERY Celtic signing as he blasts idea club buys players without him
BRENDAN RODGERS insists he's fully responsible for every single signing Celtic make. The Hoops boss described new left-back Hayato Inamura as an "investment" of the club. 4 Brendan Rodgers insists the buck stops with him when it comes to new signings Credit: Willie Vass 4 Celtic unveiled their newest player, Shin Yamada, at the weekend Credit: Getty And he's still desperate for a new goalscorer despite the arrival of hitmen Callum Osmand and Shin Yamada. But Rodgers has shot down suggestions players have been targeted without his say-so. The Celtic boss said: 'It's pretty straightforward. 'There will be players within our recruitment team that are not just for now but for the future. 'Clearly I will look at those players and assess, and see if those players can come in and play. 'Then there will be other players we specifically need. 'But it's still very much joined up. 'I suppose it's more around whether the players are for now or later. 'People know the model over a number of years. 'There are players who come in who are maybe not expected to hit the ground running, but some of them do. Celtic star Daizen Maeda spotted doing press-ups in technical area after being subbed-off against Sporting Lisbon 'That's what I need to assess, those guys coming in. 'But I also need to win now, and we need to get those players in. 'Either way, I will be responsible for that. 'Club signings, with the greatest respect, I don't care where they come from. 'I just need good players in the building who can help us win today, tomorrow and the next week. 'I've always developed players in my career, so I respect that side of it, but also the need for the present. 'You look at the likes of Callum Osmand. He's a young, talented player, so is he ready now or does he need a loan. 'You don't know that until you assess that. He's still our signing. 'Inamura, for example, the idea was he's a talented player, but he's only been playing professional for a year. 'But he's a really gifted played who played mostly at centre half or left back, so we'll have a look at him. 'The idea was he's train and work, but would maybe need a loan. In actual fact he's come in and done really well. 'Yamada is only in the door. He has the profile and attributes we really like but for me, there is still more work for us to do.' Rodgers is still desperate for signings to strengthen his squad with Royal Antwerp winger Michel Ange Balikwisha high on his list. He added: 'For me, it's just about getting quality players and ones I can develop and who improve Celtic. 'There was a bit of focus around the players who came in last year and question marks around what they brought. 4 'For one, they didn't set the price. 'But, two, Celtic did as well as they've done for a decade and those guys really helped us. 'Auston Trusty was outstanding in the Champions League. 'I'm not really fixated on, 'I need £10m, £15m or whatever' -I just need quality players. 'That is about opportunity and seeing the right players with the right value. 'The market is complicated, especially when you are trying to get of the level we would like. 'We all know we've lost goals and would live to replace it with quality. 'The market is not as easy as it may seem but I am very confident as a club we will bring in the right players." 4 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) LUKE LITTLER completed one of his finest EVER comebacks to book his place in the World Matchplay Darts quarter-finals. The teen sensation came back from 7-2 behind to shoot down Jermaine 'Machine Gun' Wattimena 13-11 in a tie-break classic. It went all the way to a nail-biting tie-break and Littler said: 'It just didn't go to plan. I bust the 127 then I missed my doubles. 'I was always three or four legs behind. But after the second break I say to myself 'I'm on the stage until the end, just work hard'. 'When I won I pointed to the star on my shirt, I'm a world champion for a reason. I find these gears when I need it. 'I'll be honest I've not felt pressure like that since the first round of the World Championship against Ryan Meikle. But nervous but the crowd here unbelievable.' Littler made an awful start, averaging just 80 early on as he lost the opening FOUR legs. In contrast Wattimena was averaging 104. But The Nuke finally got his first leg on the board with a stunning 100 finish and two double tops. Littler then halved the deficit with double four but Wattimena then extended his lead to 7-2 to leave the teen sensation on the ropes. At this point Littler had missed TEN efforts on doubles. The Nuke then hit a vital double 16 to narrow the gap before the second break. He gestured to the fans: 'I'm still here'. A clinical 107, 70, tops and double 10 followed for Littler to make it 8-7 and he let out a huge scream. Luke Littler reveals gruelling new training regime that saw him almost break darts record But Wattimena wasn't finished and he showed great spirit to stay with Littler to make it 9-9. The Nuke then missed one match dart before going to a tie-break. He then blew three more chances to win it but finally wrapped it up with double 10. Gerwyn Price romped into the quarters with a stunning 11-3 win over Chris Dobey. It was all one-way traffic and no dramas for the Welshman after his stage aggro with Daryl Gurney earlier in the week. 3 Littler and Wattimena enjoy a classy moment together after their epic clash Credit: SKY SPORTS Price said: 'I think I'm played well in the middle part of the game. 'The crowd were behind me which I didn't expect today after Monday. 'It was fantastic, the middle part of the game I felt I couldn't miss. I put Chris under a lot of pressure. I think he played decent in patches. 'I want to let my emotions go sometimes. It was a tough game.'
