EQIQ doubles down on Iraq's digital economy, plans to double fund to $30mln after backing 5 tech startups
Abu Dhabi, UAE – Abu Dhabi, UAE – EQIQ, a venture capital fund and venture builder led by founding partners with a track record of investing over $500 million in technology startups and generating more than 3.3x return, is expanding its fund size from $15M to $30M. Domiciled in Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), EQIQ is pursuing both greenfield (seeding new ventures) and brownfield (scaling established startups) investments in technology startups in Iraq. By aligning synergies across verticals in e-commerce, logistics, and fintech, the fund aims to create holistic, digital solutions that address real challenges and serve millions of users with delightful experiences.
EQIQ was founded by serial entrepreneur Mohamed Al-Hakim, who launched his first startup at the age of 15 and exited his first startup at the age of 19. After growing up in Europe, studying at University College London, and working in investment banking at Goldman Sachs in London, Mohamed decided to move back to Iraq in 2014 to help build the tech ecosystem. From launching one of the first fintech companies in the country to being the CEO of Careem in Iraq and Jordan, Al-Hakim has been at the forefront of the technology ecosystem in Iraq since his reverse migration. Far from being a smooth journey, the last 10 years have seen a remarkable shift in the outlook for the Iraqi economy.

Abu Dhabi: The Ministry of Economy and Tourism signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with WORKSTUDIO CORPORATION, a Japanese company, to develop an integrated circular economy framework aligned with the UAE Circular Economy Agenda 2031. This strategic collaboration aims to enhance the sustainable management of natural resources, reduce carbon emissions, and strengthen the UAE's transition to a sustainable national economy. The MoU signing was held in Dubai in the presence of His Excellency Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Tourism and Chairman of the UAE Circular Economy Council, and was signed by H.E. Abdullah Ahmed Al Saleh, Undersecretary of the Ministry, and Kazuhiro Hara, CEO of WORKSTUDIO Corporation. H.E. bin Touq said: 'The Ministry remains committed to advancing circular economy methodologies and principles across critical sectors such as food, manufacturing, sustainable transportation and green infrastructure. Our goal is to raise awareness about the importance of preserving natural resources, drive transformation in environmental and financial practices, and promote sustainable production and consumption. We aim to foster investment in natural resources and apply successful economic tools, in line with the wise leadership's vision to accelerate the shift towards a circular economy model based on sustainability and competitiveness.' The MoU aims to launch a project that includes developing an integrated model for the circular economy in the country, based on WORKSTUDIO's innovative system, PANECO®︎, which was developed in Japan and specializes in recycling textile and food waste in accordance with international best practices. This project supports the efficient use of resources and cost reduction by transforming textile waste into valuable materials and converting food waste into organic fertilizers. In doing so, it helps protect the environment and advance sustainable development. By adopting these innovative waste recycling solutions, the project also reduces greenhouse gas emissions associated with burning waste - an improvement over traditional methods of disposing of unused clothing and food and aligns with the national policies that encourage the recycling of organic waste. The project will focus on developing recycling facilities in the country, training national cadres, and establishing a joint coordination committee to follow up on implementation and ensure the participation of both the government and private sectors. The new project seeks to build a collaborative system that brings together production companies, consumers, and manufacturers. The new partnership marks a significant step in strengthening the efficiency of trademark registration agents in the country.' Abu Dhabi: The Ministry of Economy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Emirates Intellectual Property Association to strengthen collaboration in delivering a specialized training programme for UAE trademark agents. The initiative aims to equip participants with the technical and legal expertise required to earn certification, in line with Ministerial Decision No. 90 of 2024, which regulates trademark agent accreditation in the UAE. The memorandum was signed by H.E. Abdullah Ahmed Al Saleh, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy; and H.E. Major General Dr Abdulqadoos Abdulrazak Al Obaidli, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Excellence and Leadership at Dubai Police and Chairman of the Emirates Intellectual Property Association, in the presence of H.E. Dr Abdulrahman Hassan Al Muaini, Assistant Undersecretary for the Intellectual Property Sector at the Ministry of Economy. H.E. For the first time, swarms of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can now work together without a central command. Thanks to powerful, decentralised AI developed in the UAE. Smarter, Self-Organised Drone Teams Forget traditional drone fleets that rely on fixed flight paths or manual control. TII's AI-powered drone swarms can self-organise, adapt on the fly, and make decisions together based on real-time situations. These swarms are designed to carry out multiple tasks simultaneously, whether it's assessing damage during a natural disaster, inspecting infrastructure, or tracking environmental changes. 'As part of our work at TII, we're redefining the meaning of autonomy,' said Dr. Najwa Aaraj, CEO of the Technology Innovation Institute. 'Our drones operate as a team, without needing constant instructions, and that makes them perfect for urgent, high-stakes situations.' Ideal for Crisis Response and Beyond Because of their decentralised intelligence, these drone swarms remain operational even if individual drones drop out due to harsh conditions like floods or earthquakes. That makes them an ideal solution for emergency response teams, infrastructure monitoring, agriculture, and even ecosystem protection. 'Disasters are getting more frequent and more complex,' said Professor Enrico Natalizio, Lead Researcher in Autonomous Robotics at TII. 'We need smarter, faster tools. Our drone swarms are designed to step in exactly when humans can't.' Simpler Control, Smarter Execution To ensure real-world usability, TII has developed a scalable command platform that lets operators control entire swarms through simple, high-level instructions. 'Even if there's no connectivity, the drones keep working together,' said Dr. Dario Albani, Senior Director for Autonomous Robotics at TII. 'This kind of reliability is a game-changer in urgent missions.' Real-World Rollout Underway TII is currently piloting these drone swarms and planning broader deployment with global industry partners. Their work is part of a larger government push to develop safe, ethical AI tools that benefit society. Commercial rollouts are being handled by VentureOne, ATRC's dedicated commercialization arm, targeting public safety, energy, and environmental sectors.
