Mary Corse Sets a Thrilling Pace Exhibition In LA

One of the most thrilling shows I've seen recently is Mary Corse at Pace Gallery LA on view through August 16, 2025.
Corse, who recently turned 80, has been an LA artist most of her life, having attended Chouinard Art School (which became CalArts) in the early 1960s and living and working in Los Angeles ever since.
At a time when so much contemporary art is figurative, and abstract work tends to the fantastical or psychedelic, Corse's new work reminds us of the rigor, discipline, and inquiry about art-making itself that is central to Corse's practice.
The Pace LA show features many of Corse's Diamond shaped works which she has been exploring since 1965. The works are shaped canvases tilted to be diamonds rather than squares and whose surface extends beyond the edges concavely in such a way that, although they appear two dimensional, the works are actually three-dimensional. The canvases seem to float in front of the wall. These subtle shifts in how the work is presented and what draws our eye, ask us to consider what is painting? What is sculpture?

Corse's White Diamond paintings are a rigorous investigation of perception, color, and our own interactions with her work. Some of the Diamond series recall early Russian Constructivist work, Malevich in particular. In other of her works, such as her paintings that feature a reflective black stripe down the middle, it is as if the action and drama in the work have been reduced to a single strip, The ways in which our eye and mind behave when looking at her work, adds a further dimension to Corse's work.
Corse's work has also investigated light, and her Pace presentation includes Corse's Halo Room, which is a light installation, in a room of its own that interacts with your presence and shadow as you approach it, and that is animated wirelessly by a Tesla coil (Tesla the scientist not the car).
Many California artists rejected Minimalism as a New York, primarily male, art movement that espoused a cool impersonal aesthetic. Instead, several California artists turned to making works that investigated light, space, or were land art interventions and that often took advantage of materials and knowledge from California's Aerospace industry and institutions such as CalTech.

Instead, Corse's work demonstrates that Minimalism can be personal, have drama, and can be rooted in California's special light. And that is as thrilling to ponder as it to see.

Lizzo Says This Macronutrient Is 'The Secret To Happiness'

Reinvention doesn't come without effort. Just ask Women's Health's summer issue cover star Lizzo. In a candid interview with writer Jessica Herndon, the 37-year-old artist details the big life changes she's made over the past couple of years to find inner peace (can you say social media cleanse!?) and heal her body. Lizzo had long been plagued by radiating back pain, a result of damaged discs from pressure caused by her weight. And while she'd always been proud of her size, Lizzo knew she had to make some changes in order to find relief from the debilitating pain. As she puts it: "Body positivity has nothing to do with staying the same." In addition to enlisting the services of Kelly Rowland's personal trainer Marvin Telp to create a consistent workout regimen, Lizzo also revamped her diet—one she shares with WH in the latest installment of our video series Fuel Like. "My relationship with eating has evolved so much," she says. "There have been times where I have undernourished myself; there have been times where I was bingeing. When I intuitively eat and listen to my body, that always works out for me." Part of her intuitive eating plan has included reincorporating meat into her diet following her decision to go vegan in 2020. After experiencing periods of low energy and stomach pains, her trainer recommended she try a Japanese diet. A trip to Japan was the tipping point Lizzo needed to give meat another try. As she recalls thinking: "Let's put our toe in the water with a country whose food I know is very, very clean." The result? "I felt incredible," Lizzo says. "When I got back to the States, I started to slowly introduce animal proteins into my diet, and here we are today." Protein is just one component of the eating routine that fuels Lizzo. She's also quick to sing the praises of another macronutrient: carbs. "Your body loves carbs," she enthuses. "Carbs are the secret to happiness!" Find out how Lizzo incorporates protein and carbs into breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks(!) by watching the latest installment of Fuel Like. 9-1-1: Nashville's LeAnn Rimes Reveals Surprising Detail About Her Character: ‘There's No Way!'

Much about LeAnn Rimes' character on 9-1-1: Nashville remains a mystery, but thanks to a new interview with TVLine sister site Flow Space, at least we know what she'll smell like! (Yes, you read that correctly.) In preparation for her first series-regular TV role, Rimes reveals that she has created a signature scent 'in honor' of her new character — a blend of rosewood, tobacco, leather, black pepper and the wood scent oud. 'Fragrance is super-emotional for me,' the singer says, likening it to music in that way. More from TVLine New Rookie Spinoff Inching Closer to Pilot Order - Who Would You Cast in Lead Role? There's no way you're old enough to play a mom!'' Meanwhile, Rimes has been running lines with husband Eddie Cibrian, whose experience with TV procedurals ranges from Third Watch to CSI: Miami. 'I get really nervous doing that in front of him, but he's been super helpful,' she admits. Premiering this fall on ABC, 9-1-1: Nashville stars Chris O'Donnell as Captain Don Sharpe, with Jessica Capshaw as Don's horse-whispering wife Blythe and Michael Provost as their son Ryan.
