Fritz into Wimbledon quarter-finals after Thompson retires
Taylor Fritz booked a place in the Wimbledon quarter-finals in double-quick time on Sunday after Australia's Jordan Thompson retired injured with the score at 6-1, 3-0.
The US fifth seed faced gruelling five-set battles in his opening two matches but it was a different story in his fourth-round encounter on Court One.

The Eastbourne champion broke Thompson twice to seal the first set in just 21 minutes and led 3-0 in the second set.
The Australian then had a medical time-out to deal with an apparent thigh problem.
He returned to the court and slipped 40-0 down in the fourth game before deciding he was unable to continue, with the match lasting just 41 minutes.
"He's been playing five-setters," said Fritz, 27. "He was out playing a long doubles match yesterday you know, so he's been battling out here and I respected him for coming out.
"Obviously his body's not right. So, you know, I feel bad for him."

Thompson, 44th in the rankings, was taken to five sets in his opening two singles matches at Wimbledon.
Fritz, seeking to reach his first Wimbledon semi-final, will next face Russian 17th seed Karen Khachanov, who earlier beat Kamil Majchrzak with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 on Court Two.
Fritz won a record fourth Eastbourne title last month and was pushed to his limits in his opening two matches at the All England Club.
The world number five rallied from the brink to defeat Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in five sets before going the distance against Gabriel Diallo in the second round.
He then downed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in four sets, taking his time on court over three rounds to nearly 10 hours.

Cameron Smith responds as NRL considers breaking own rules for Wayne Bennett
Cameron Smith says it would be a 'prestigious' honour to be handed the Kangaroos coaching job but he might have to settle for another role, with calls growing louder for Wayne Bennett to get the job. In order for the veteran coach to take charge of the Aussie team, league bosses would have to change a current rule that prevents club coaches from leading the national side. Nine's Michael Chammas revealed on '100% Footy' on Monday night that the ARL Commission will meet on Wednesday to vote on the issue, but claimed it was 'unlikely' they would change the rule. If that's the case, then former Kangaroos captain Smith is a massive chance to succeed Mal Meninga, who stepped down as Australia's mentor after being named inaugural coach of the Perth Bears, who will enter the NRL in 2027. Former NSW coach Brad Fittler was another leading contender but pulled out of the race due to his extensive media commitments with Channel Nine. That leaves Smith and former Maroons and Broncos coach Kevin Walters as the other leading candidates, if Bennett is prevented from taking on the role. And Smith - who played a whopping 56 Tests for Australia and captained the country on numerous occasions - said the appeal of leading the Aussies for this year's end-of-season Ashes series in England would be incredible. "It's huge, isn't it? I grew up watching Ashes tours where Australia would play Great Britain or England," he said. "I never got to play in one, but that's a huge lure to be a part of such a prestigious and historic tour. It hasn't been done for a long, long time - over 20 years - so it would be great to be a part of." Despite being touted as one of the favourites for the job though, Smith says he's yet to be given any clarification from league bosses. "I haven't spoken to anyone about the role as yet. I'm aware that my name has been tossed up as a potential coach," he added. "I do understand though, it's a wonderful opportunity. It's a great privilege to be able to be the coach of our national side, the Kangaroos. I was lucky enough to play for that team many, many times, so it would be a great privilege." If Bennett is allowed to take the role, there have been suggestions that Smith could work as an assistant to the master coach for the Ashes, before eventually taking over ahead of next year's Rugby League World Cup. "I haven't put too much thought into it. As it stands right now, the rules are that club coaches can't be involved," Smith said. "But I'm hearing that they might be discussing that and maybe altering their thoughts on that, which is entirely up to the game and the executives in charge. If that happens, that's great. Wayne Bennett's a wonderful coach. He's probably one of the greatest coaches to ever coach in our game, so if he ends up being the Kangaroos coach, they'll be in good hands." Last week, veteran journalist Phil Rothfield predicted NRL bosses would break its own rules and allow Bennett to lead the Kangaroos in more of a 'caretaker' role for the Ashes. According to Rothfield, a full-time coach without ties to an NRL club will be appointed after that.

Djokovic Finds The Wind In His Sails To Defeat De Minaur At Wimbledon

(Photo) After beating Jannik Sinner in the 2023 Wimbledon semifinals, Novak Djokovic joked that 36 was the new 26 and that he was feeling just great about competing against the next generation. On the second Monday of Wimbledon 2025, the Serb didn't find the feel or look as sprightly on Centre Court. Djokovic still got the job done by beating Alex de Minaur 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in three hours and 18 minutes to go through to the quarterfinals. The number two seed lacked his usual swagger from he start against the Australian on a much cooler second Monday at SW19. The 24-time major champion was unusually jerky in his movements. There was something slow-motion about the match overall with what Djokovic called a 'cat and mouse' trade of sliced exchanges. It suited de Minaur down to the ground in the first set as he absorbed his opponent's groundstrokes and broke the Serb three times. Djokovic's viewfinder on serve was unfocused as he committed four double faults to go with 16 unforced errors. In the press conference, the third favorite for the title attributed his travails to the swirling, windy conditions. De Minaur is a player who always competes, is one of the best athletes around, and consistently reaches the last eight of the majors. The question mark is how he can be more than just a minor nuisance to the big shots of the game. While Djokovic began to find some rhythm on his service games, the Aussie hardly won any free points on his serve. His blue-collar shift work on every point of every game compensates for this to some extent, but backing up breaks of serve against the big beasts is always a challenge. De Minaur is 0-14 against Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz combined and was hammered by Djokovic in the 2023 Australian Open and by Sinner in the 2025 edition at Melbourne. The 38-year-old is looking for his eighth Wimbledon title and admitted that he was nervous before the match. He had never played de Minaur on grass and despite levelling the match, Djokovic's frustration grew in the third set as the 26-year-old from Sydney held firm until there was real scoreboard jeopardy. Djokovic rejected the idea that he was physically struggling, but at times he applied ice to his stomach. His stretchy nan presence on the court was subdued and there was just no snap to the movement. 'Djokovic looks like his age now for a change,' said 1987 champion Pat Cash on BBC radio. 'He has been running around huffing and puffing and not been able to force the play. We usually see Novak pounding some big shots on his opponents, but he has been running everywhere.' There was always that sense of inevitability that de Minaur would struggle to fully push through. He lost serve at 4-4 twice in a row in the second and third sets. That can only be the Djokovic effect although it wasn't as if last year's runner-up was playing out of this world. De Minaur even went 4-1 up in the fourth and had a break point to make it 5-1 . He never won another game. Suddenly, there was no motor on any of his shots, no sense of security or belief to bedevil the best on Centre Court. Truth be told, the last five games were a procession as the Serb 'locked in' to his target with that impenetrable steel-plated resolve The timeline to Djokovic's competitiveness is infinity and beyond. He has no need to waste precious time fighting for Masters events when the true mission is all about the showpiece events, including an ambitious shot at defending his Olympic gold in Los Angeles. When asked on court if there was anything brewing, the shutdown to the BBC's Rishi Persad was polite and to the point. Novak Djokovic had a kind word for one man in the crowd when he wished he could 'serve and volley' like Roger Federer, who was watching on from the Royal Box. It's the running between points that is the killer for those legs now. The drop shots come a little earlier. The marathon rallies are not so much fun. As for 36 being the new 26, that last number would do very nicely in the major column. It's still on.
