Pupil, 14, murdered, dismayed Gauteng MEC sends counsellors to school
The 14-year-old grade 8 pupil at Ikusasalethu Secondary School in Braamfischerville, Johannesburg, is understood to have lived with her grandmother. She went missing on Saturday and her mutilated body was found in the veld at Durban Deep, Roodepoort, on Sunday.
'While police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding this brutal incident, we are devastated by Likhona's death during National Child Protection Week, where we raise awareness of the rights of children as articulated in our constitution.
'As the department, we cannot begin to express how disheartened we are by the loss of Likhona, a young girl learner who had a bright future ahead of her. For her life to have been taken from her in such a brutal manner is unacceptable and we call on law enforcement authorities to speedily apprehend those responsible.
'We extend our sincerest condolences to the family and the school community of Ikusasalethu Secondary, assuring them we share their pain,' said Chiloane.

Bail granted to Mduduzi Mnisi in shocking murder case of 14-year-old
Murder accused, 39-year-old Mduduzi Trevor Mnisi, charged with the premeditated murder of 14-year-old Likhona Fose, was granted bail of R5,000 on Wednesday by the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court. Image: Itumeleng English / Independent Newspapers The man accused of murdering a 14-year-old former Ikusasalethu Secondary School learner, Likhona Fose, was on Wednesday granted bail of R5,000. Mduduzi Trevor Mnisi, the 39-year-old parolee who faces several charges, including premeditated murder, appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, where, due to a lack of evidence linking him to the disappearance of the Durban Deep learner, he was granted bail. Mnisi, who was allegedly last seen with Likhona in May, the day she went missing, has previously denied his involvement in the gruesome murder. Likhona's mysterious disappearance sent shockwaves among the community of Braamfischerville and Durban Deep after she was found mutilated, just a day after her disappearance on June 1. The matter was postponed to Friday, July 11. Mnisi is currently out on parole for a 2009 robbery and attempted murder conviction. His release comes a week after his girlfriend, Pinky Gantso, testified and provided an alibi for the day Likhona disappeared, stating that Mnisi had visited her in Daveyton on the night in question. The State, which had opposed bail, was accused of relying heavily on a witness statement claiming Mnisi was seen with Likhona on May 31, shortly before she was reported missing. The investigating officer in the matter, Moses Semosa, who testified last week, insisted that Mnisi was the last person to be seen with Likhona around Durban Deep, adding that due to Mnisi's previous conviction, he should not be granted bail. Semosa returned to the stand in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Wednesday as Mnisi continued his bid for bail. He revealed that Gantso's evidence corroborates Mnisi's claims that he was in Daveyton at the time. "I have the cellphone records of the applicant who is appearing here before the court. Your worship, the information that I am reading here shows that on the 31st May, 2025, at 16:55:49 seconds... the tower shows Daveyton. It also shows that he had communication with another person... At 20:01, the tower shows Kagiso," the officer stated. In his defence, Mnisi gave the court an account of his whereabouts on the day of Likhona's disappearance. He said: "That Saturday, I went to Daveyton. When I came back, it was approximately past 7 to 8 in the evening,' he told the court.

Officials suspended over stalled repairs at Noordgesig Secondary
Officials accused of failing to complete post-fire upgrades as department launches investigation. The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has suspended two Infrastructure Unit inspectors over alleged failures to complete urgent repair work at Noordgesig Secondary School in Soweto. The department took swift action on Wednesday, suspending the officials tasked with overseeing reconstruction efforts after a fire severely damaged the school on June 27, 2024. Repairs not completed 'The department had allocated funds for urgent repairs and reconstruction work,' the GDE said in a statement. 'However, it is suspected that repairs might have not been completed, and some of the committed upgrades are suspected to have been partially done or not carried out at all.' According to the department, the suspended inspectors were responsible for monitoring and managing the project. Their suspension follows concerns raised about the state of the school infrastructure nearly a year after the fire. 'We will announce the outcome of said investigation once it has been completed,' the department stated. Last year, the fire disrupted learning and raised urgent safety concerns among the school community. In response, the department committed to a series of upgrades to restore functionality and ensure a safe learning environment. The GDE said it remains committed to ensuring accountability and restoring the school infrastructure. 'Subsequently, we will announce the outcome of said investigation once it has been completed,' it concluded. Of these 29 schools, six have been repaired by the GDE at a cost of R9.3 million, roughly one per year at an average cost of R15 million per project. However, an additional 10 schools were fixed using funds made available by insurance companies, School Governing Body donations or private sponsors. 13 schools still need repairs and have been handed over to another government department. 'It must be noted that damages were of such a nature that it required extensive work to be done in the affected schools,' stated Chiloane's response. 'In this regard, the work was referred to the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development for implementation,' it explained. NOW READ: Schools or war zones? DA slams poor fire safety as 13 Gauteng schools still to be repaired after blazes
More than a dozen Gauteng schools that were damaged by fire have not been repaired, up to five years after the incidents were reported. Since 2019, 29 schools across the province have been damaged by fire, but only six have been fixed by the Gauteng department of education (GDE), at a total cost of R9,301,040. Thirteen schools have neither been assessed nor repaired, while 10 schools were fixed using school insurance, the school governing body (SGB), or donations. The Gauteng education MEC, Matome Chiloane, revealed this in response to questions by the DA in the provincial legislature. The DA slammed the government's response, saying the situation reflected a wider problem of poor fire safety protocols in schools. 'Fire safety protocol deficiencies in Gauteng schools have been exposed, with 29 schools burnt down since 2019,' said Sergio Isa Dos Santos, DA Gauteng shadow MEC for education.
