Agony for the Matildas as late goal denies new coach Joe Montemurro dream start
After a scoreless opening half at HBF Park on Sunday evening, the Australians secured a deserved breakthrough five minutes after the break when Remy Seimsen set Ellie Carpenter up to float a cutback to Michelle Heyman, who placed a side-footed volley into the net.
But a late flurry from the Slovenians was rewarded a minute into added time when an effort from Naja Poje Mihelic bounced off the post and back into the path of fellow substitute Kastelec, who slid in front of a desperately retreating Australian defence to fire home.
It dampened a performance from the Australians that showed signs of improvement as they continue to adapt to the new possession-based principles of Montemurro - even if the margin was well off the 3-0 victory they secured over the same opposition on Thursday evening.
After a midweek win characterised by struggles with the Slovenian press and sloppy turnovers, the hosts were cleaner with the ball in their defensive third in the re-match, which resulted in fewer opportunities off giveaways for the Europeans.
This was accompanied by improvements in the side's movement and combination play going forward, particularly from Carpenter and Amy Sayer on the right.
The promising build-ups, however, were frequently let down by the final ball or stymied by desperate last-gasp defending.
That was until the 50th minute, when Seimsen's inch-perfect ball for Carpenter set the wingback up to put it on a plate for Heyman.
Charli Grant came close to killing the game off in the 70th minute but had her shot cleared off the line, before the visitors raised their intensity.
Having hardly been sighted to that point, Mackenzie Arnold was called into action in the 90th minute to make a quick reaction to deny Kastelec, but the Australian keeper could do little about the 22-year-old's effort a minute later.
Seeking to bounce back, Montemurro will now shuffle his deck for fixtures against Panama on July 5 and July 8, with Carpenter, Cooney-Cross and Kennedy amongst eight players leaving camp, with eight new players set to jet into West Australia.

RB Leipzig 'REJECT' Newcastle's record £69.9m bid for Benjamin Sesko - in potential blow for Alexander Isak's hopes of a Liverpool move
Newcastle's search for Alexander Isak's successor has hit a snag - as RB Leipzig have reportedly rejected their opening bid for Benjamin Sesko. Toon submitted a club record bid of £69.9million for Sesko, 22, but have been told the structure of their offer is insufficient. It comes as a blow to Alexander Isak, whose hopes of a move to Liverpool likely hinge on Newcastle being able to install a capable replacement first. Mail Sport has exclusively reported that Liverpool plan to return with a second approach for Isak after having their initial bid of £100m quickly snubbed. Newcastle are looking at Sesko - who is also admired by Manchester United - as well as Brentford 's Yoane Wissa, who has refused to train in a ploy to force through a move. But they will have to improve their offer if they are to land Sesko, as The Athletic reports that their first has been rejected by RB Leipzig. On Saturday the club made an official bid for Sesko comprising of a £65.5million up-front fee plus an additional £4.4m in add-ons. That would smash the £60m they splashed on Isak from Real Sociedad in 2022. Sesko is apparently yet to make up his mind as to whether he would prefer to join Newcastle or United. However, reports from Sesko's native Slovenia claimed on Friday that Sesko would prefer a move to St James' Park this summer. United's interest has been led by director of recruitment Christopher Vivell, who previously worked with Sesko at RB Salzburg and described the 6ft 4in forward as having the potential to become one of the world's leading players. The Old Trafford club are said to have named Sesko their No 1 target in recent weeks, having previously been linked with a move for Aston Villa marksman Ollie Watkins. Meanwhile, Isak is now seemingly agitating for a move and did not join Newcastle on their pre-season tour of Asia. The club explained his absence with the excuse of a 'minor thigh injury' but his scans came back clear and he has been training at the facilities of his old club Real Sociedad. He has since returned to Tyneside. Howe admitted this week that he had not been made aware of Isak's plans to return to the Basque club for rehabilitation and that he had instead found out through media reports. 'I know where he is, really, through the media,' Howe told Mail Sport as Newcastle stopped in Seoul as part of their pre-season tour. 'From that perspective, it's difficult for me to go into any kind of detail. The situation is far from ideal and is quite complex.' Newcastle are holding out for a fee upwards of £150m for Isak, who has scored 52 goals combined in the last two seasons.

Man Utd fans fear Rasmus Hojlund will gift Benjamin Sesko to Newcastle as £72m flop makes transfer decision
MANCHESTER UNITED fans fear they could miss out on signing Benjamin Sesko because of Rasmus Hojlund. The striker has emerged as a key target for Ruben Amorim. 3 3 Play Dream Team now! United are battling Newcastle for Sesko, who is valued at £70million by RB Leipzig. The German club would consider selling and are believed to be interested in Hojlund, with a potential swap deal on offer. But the striker has privately informed the club that he wants to stay and fight for his place, according to Ben Jacobs. And it is believed he is not keen on a switch to RB Leipzig, which puts Sesko's arrival at threat. As a result, some United fans are not happy with Hojlund and fear they could miss out on Sesko. One said: "So he's gonna be the reason we don't get Sesko, don't hate the guy but come on, he's not good enough and now just sabotaging us even more tbh." Another added: "If this prevents us potentially getting Sesko." A third wrote: "This guy thinks he has a chance of staying if Sesko chooses to come to Manchester United? 🤡" 3 Newcastle have reportedly met Sesko's asking price but the Red Devils are not out of the race. More negotiations are scheduled with both clubs and United are "ready to make their move". Sesko, 22, has a gentleman's agreement with RB Leipzig that he can leave if they receive a good enough offer. And with talks ongoing, Sesko was left out of their pre-season friendly against Atalanta today. RB Leipzig chief Marcel Schafer was asked about the player's future and he said: "We won't go into detail on that, but when I say that several clubs have shown strong interest and have made approaches, it's obvious what has happened."
