Experts roped in for busy trafffic crossings
Officials said the rapid increase in vehicular traffic has turned these crossings into daily bottlenecks. The situation is expected to worsen with the upcoming construction of Jaipur Metro Line 2 by the Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation (JMRC). The main line will pass through the Govt Hostel Crossing, while a spur from Chandpole Gate will link Line 1 and Line 2 at the same point. JMRC also has plans for metro connectivity to Ajmeri Gate.
DCP (traffic) Shaheen C confirmed that preliminary surveys and measures have been implemented. "We are now seeking expert technical input and will appoint a third-party agency to suggest solutions. Institutions like MNIT and others are under consideration," she said.
Meanwhile, the traffic department installed sensor-enabled signals at these two crossings. Such signals are installed at a few other crossings in the city, like the Rambagh Circle.

"The time limits (for green or red) at these signals are not pre-set. These signals determine the volume of traffic on each flank and glow red or green according to the requirement. Recently, we installed these signals at these two crossings.
Traffic movements at both crossings improved to some extent following the installations," said a senior traffic official.
The traffic department also decided to install signals with illuminated poles at all the traffic signals across the city. This technology enables the lighting on the entire pole to be synchronized with the signal, which helps motorists to have a view of the signal, even if they are stranded behind a bigger vehicle.

In Karnataka, Shakti scheme ticket count set to cross 500-crore mark
Bengaluru: On Monday, the Shakti scheme — offering free bus travel for women in the state — is set to cross the 500-crore ridership milestone. To mark the occasion, chief minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy DK Shivakumar will travel in a city bus and personally issue tickets to women passengers. Transport minister Ramalinga Reddy told TOI that at the district level, committees overseeing implementation of the five guarantee schemes will celebrate the milestone by distributing sweets and flowers. The Shakti scheme was the first of the five guarantees launched by Congress govt. From June 11, 2023 to July 11, 2025, the state's four road transport corporations — KSRTC, BMTC, NWKRTC, and KKRTC — issued over 497 crore tickets. The corporations have spent a whopping Rs 12,614 crore to provide free travel facilities for women on ordinary bus services. Out of nearly 25,000 buses, women are allowed to travel in over 20,000. In June this year, conductors issued more than 73 lakh tickets daily to women availing of the free travel benefit. In the first month of the scheme's launch, RTCs issued over 10 crore tickets, incurring an expenditure of Rs 250 crore. In the second month, the number of tickets issued rose to nearly 20 crore, and the cost reached Rs 453 crore. Patronage continued to grow in the following months. The highest number of tickets — over 22 crore — was issued in May 2025, accounting for Rs 670 crore. Following an upward revision in bus fares in Jan 2025, the expenditure to provide free travel under the scheme saw a significant jump. Reddy said, "Naturally, when there is a revision in bus fares, the cost of providing benefits under the scheme increases. During festive seasons and holidays, we also see increased patronage. As promised, the state govt has been supporting RTCs by reimbursing the expenditure. Except for a pending amount of Rs 2,750 crore, RTCs have received the rest of the funds spent under the scheme." He stated that the govt has extended additional financial support to RTCs by providing a loan of Rs 2,000 crore and facilitating the induction of new buses. "After coming to power, we have taken measures to induct 5,800 new buses and recruit 10,000 staff, including 1,000 on compassionate grounds. RTCs currently have a liability of Rs 4,000 crore due to the lack of support from the previous BJP govt," Reddy added.

This I-Day weekend, Goa flights from Ahmedabad 33% costlier than Dubai
Ahmedabad: After a rather quiet summer travel season, Gujaratis are making the most of a back-to-back holiday bonanza this Aug. With Independence Day falling on a Friday, followed by Janmashtami on Saturday and Sunday rounding off the week, the three-day window from Aug 15-17 is proving irresistible for a quick getaway. However, even if you plan a month before, a roundtrip flight to a nearby destination might just burn a hole in your pocket. At the top of the price charts is Goa, with return fares from Ahmedabad between Aug 14 and 18 averaging around Rs 28,000 on direct flights. Surprisingly, return air fare to Dubai are hovering around Rs 21,000, which is 33% less for the same dates. Even other domestic routes like Dehradun (Rs 17,000), Chennai (Rs 10,000), Mumbai (Rs 10,000), and Jaipur (Rs 9,000) are offering little relief. According to travel agents, the Aug rush comes against the backdrop of a relatively quiet summer vacation season, with many families skipping May-June holidays. "Domestic bookings nosedived after the India-Pakistan border tensions escalated and the ill-fated terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam. In fact, there were ample cancellations too. That apart, airspace closure and other concerns also impacted international travel plans of many. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Upto 15% Discount for Salaried Individuals ICICI Pru Life Insurance Plan Get Quote Undo This is the first real opportunity for a short escapade after months, and people are booking their holidays in large numbers, especially families and young working couples. That's pushing fares up sharply," said Virendra Shah, ex-chairman, Travel Agents' Association of India (TAAI) Gujarat chapter. You Can Also Check: Ahmedabad AQI | Weather in Ahmedabad | Bank Holidays in Ahmedabad | Public Holidays in Ahmedabad "Many travellers scrambled to cancel or rebook both international and domestic tickets, often at exorbitant last-minute rates. The rush to find alternate routes or destinations only intensified the price pressure," he added. Offering the best of both worlds, including the hills and the seas, lush forests and waterfalls, Goa remains the top pick for many travellers from Gujarat, owing to its proximity with direct flight connectivity, monsoon charm, beach-side properties, and vibrant local culture. Traditionally, the coastal state also draws visitors from Gujarat who tend to go gambling on Janmashtami. "Interestingly, the traction for international destinations is also good. People are adjusting their leaves on 13/14 or 13 and 17 or 17/18 and flocking to Southeast Asian spots like Maldives, Krabi, and Bali, among others. Even Sri Lanka bookings have seen a good uptake," said Manish Sharma, a travel industry expert based in Ahmedabad. "With flights out of reach for many, road trips are also picking up strongly. While Udaipur, Mount Abu, the Polo Forest region, and even heritage stays in Kutch and Saurashtra are seeing strong demand, particularly for self-drive holidays and quick family packages. Travel platforms are reporting a surge in last-minute searches for staycations and drivable destinations from Ahmedabad. We have already witnessed an uptick in property prices in Udaipur," Sharma further explained.

OnBoard launched to aid Bengaluru's visually impaired bus passengers
Bengaluru: In an effort to make public transport more inclusive, BMTC has implemented the OnBoard solution — a new assistive device to assist visually impaired individuals identify a specific route number bus they wish to board. When a bus nears a stop, the user can press the 'Find' button, triggering an audio announcement of the route number through a speaker mounted on the bus. If it matches the intended route, pressing 'Select' alerts the driver and conductor, who can then assist the commuter in boarding. The new system features a two-part communication setup: A handheld remote device carried by the user and a communication unit installed on the bus, mounted on the lower left front glass panel near the entry door. You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru BMTC conducted a pilot study involving 25 buses operating on routes 401K and 242B, which are frequently used by visually impaired commuters. The project included hands-on training for 500 users, with 25 active participants testing the system during the pilot phase. Following the pilot, BMTC expanded the initiative to 100 more buses and plans to cover 500 buses in near future. On Saturday, transport minister Ramalinga Reddy officially launched the initiative in the presence of visually impaired passengers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why seniors are rushing to get this Internet box – here's why! Nithin T, a trainer for the OnBoard initiative, told TOI the system empowers visually impaired individuals to travel independently and confidently. "I'm visually impaired. Let's say I'm travelling from Yeshwantpur to Yelahanka (route 401). When I'm at the bus stop and three or four buses arrive at once, I cannot identify the one I need. I have to depend on others or approach the crew, which is not always easy. OnBoard technology addresses this. Using the handheld remote device, when I press the 'Find' button, it helps in identifying a bus which I intend to travel within a 30-metre radius that is equipped with the communication unit. When I press the 'Select' button, the unit alerts the driver that a passenger in need is about to board. The audio announcement also helps guide me to the door of the bus." A similar process ensures support during alighting.
