Nomura is on the cusp of its promised re-invention
Nomura on Wednesday reported a bumper final three months of 2024, with net profit doubling, opens new tab to 101.4 billion yen ($664 million) compared with the same period the previous year. Helping Japanese companies strike deals fired up its investment bank, which helped the bank generate an annualised 11.8% return on equity, a similar showing to the previous quarter after years of sub-par performance.
That's also powering its other two main divisions, wealth management and investment management. But Nomura is not just winning in Japan: nearly 40% of total pre-tax income came from overseas, up from 23% a year ago.
Such double-digit returns are on the surface a throwback to Nomura's results in 2020. But Okuda has diversified the firm since then to make its trading business less dependent on rates. He has also built up more recurring revenue in wealth management. Overall, he has largely stuck to his early pledges to bulk up less volatile businesses.
What's less clear is whether the bank has made enough progress to deliver its desired minimum 8% return on equity if the external environment sours - and if it can sustain its recent outperformance when markets remain supportive.
Nor is it clear if Okuda can keep the bank out of trouble. Hedge fund Archegos's 2021 blowup cost the bank billions of dollars. In November, he took a pay cut following a bond trading scandal. On Wednesday, the bank acknowledged that the arrest of a former employee on suspicion of attempting to murder an elderly couple who were clients was having a slight impact on securing new customers.
Nomura trades at 0.8 times the estimated book value for the next 12 months, per LSEG data, up slightly from this time last year. That suggests investors think last quarter's performance is a blip, notwithstanding the 7% rise in its shares on Thursday. Okuda will need a few quarters of consistency without further incidents before shareholders give the bank more credit for its transformation.
Nomura, Japan's biggest brokerage and investment bank, on February 5 reported third-quarter net profit of 101.4 billion yen ($662 million) for the three months to the end of December, a 101% increase from the same period in the previous year. The results beat the mean estimate of analysts compiled by Refinitiv.
Net revenue rose 25% over the same period to 502 billion yen. Nomura's shares rose nearly 7% to 1,068 yen apiece in morning trading on February 6.

Inside Haas efforts to turn 'very special' Oliver Bearman into an F1 superstar
Exclusive: British prospect and Ferrari academy product Oliver Bearman has the talent to become a Formula 1 superstar and it's up to Haas and boss Ayao Komatsu to polish a diamond Oliver Bearman has the potential to become a top Formula 1 star and has been showing it since he was a teenager. The Brit turned heads last year with a sensational showing on debut, called up by Ferrari as an 18-year-old to replace the unwell Carlos Sainz in Saudi Arabia. On an unfamiliar track, Bearman finished seventh and ahead of British superstars Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton. Now 20 and in his first full season on the F1 grid, he's learning his trade with midfield outfit Haas whose boss Ayao Komatsu is desperate to help him become a superstar. "I definitely feel the responsibility, in a good way," he told Mirror Sport. "Absolutely, because like I said, when I met him when he was 18 and I was like, 'Wow, this guy is a talent'. He has got such a big potential. I saw that more and more last year when we worked with him on practice sessions. For sure, it's a big responsibility for us as a team to nurture that talent and then make sure that we give him the best possible environment. "But really we're doing it together. He needs to be a fully integrated part of the team. And even though he's a rookie, he's got a lot to offer in terms of being the central part of the development, which he has been doing. So we have to treat him as a rookie. But, at the same time, in some areas, we're not treating him as a rookie because he is very, very good." Bearman was handed a multi-year contract by Haas, giving him at least two full seasons to hone his skills. But he remains affiliated with Ferrari and likely future successor to Hamilton, when the seven-time F1 champion retires. That is big billing, but it has been obvious to Ferrari and to Komatsu for some time that Bearman can go very far. The Japanese said: "Potential? We saw it from day one. That's one of the reasons why we signed him. We've got to establish the methodology, the procedure that really works so that he can reach his full potential and for him to get maximum out of the car, out of the team consistently. We're far from there yet, but that's to be expected as a rookie." Bearman made a strong start to 2025, scoring points in three of the first four races. He hasn't managed a top 10 result since with Haas' development stunted by an early-season design change after a major flaw was discovered in Melbourne. But he heads into his home race for the first time in F1 off the back of consecutive 11th-placed finishes and, while points are obviously crucial, what matters more to Komatsu is his progress. He said: "You cannot say points are not important, but you cannot be too focused on the points either because points are the result, and you cannot be just too focused on the results. Why? Because sometimes the result is not something you can control. You've got competitors. "But what you can focus on is what you can control, which is your process, methodology, how you apply yourself throughout the weekend, how you set yourself up as best as possible for qualifying and the race, and the result will be the result. So yes, we are definitely focused a lot in terms of our process, how to get the best out of him, how he can get the best out of the car and understanding working together as a team."

Brendan Rodgers welcomes quick fire Celtic transfer exit for Nicolas Kuhn for one key reason
The winger is set to seal a move to Serie A side Como and become the latest money-spinning sale boosting the Parkhead coffers Brendan Rodgers reckons Nicolas Kuhn 's megabucks move to Como offers great business all round. And the Celtic manager believes getting a deal done early provides the valuable opportunity to get more incoming moves done quickly in the summer market. Rodgers confirmed Kuhn is close to agreeing a switch to Serie A outfit for a fee understood to be around £17 million. The 25-year-old has been attracted by interest and, with the correct money on the table, Celtic have given the go ahead. Rodgers backs the switch and the timing as he said: 'We've virtually agreed between the club and Como, so it looks at this point that he'll be on his way, but we just have to wait for confirmation. 'I think it's very clear, the model of Celtic. He's come in and in the 18 months he's done absolutely fantastic for us. He was aware of interest towards the end of last season and that sort of followed through. 'Other teams have joined in that interest over the summer and that's why a lot of the young players come. It's a wonderful, brilliant club to come to develop and improve. "And you can see within a short period of time, 18 months, he's now getting the move that he wants. 'He's done brilliant for us in the 18 months and, if he does end up going and signing at Como, then it's great business all round.' Rodgers is instantly on the hunt for more recruits with the early deal key as he continued: 'Yes, it's exactly that. I think it really helps us. "The earlier, the better, really. Because if a player wants to go then I don't see the point in them hanging about. 'Really, if you can get the deal done and you get the valuation, what you think is right, then do it, move on and look to get the replacements in. 'I think we'll always look to improve the squad. There's money there to bring players in. It's just that we're getting the right ones. I'm really excited by this season.' Celtic will make a huge profit having signed the winger for £3 million and Rodgers continued: 'Yeah, and I think that is a part of our script here. Of course, we want to succeed, but a lot of these players come in with the notion that they can develop and improve. 'They're at a brilliant club, but they get the opportunity to go on and earn three or four times more in salary and that's something that will always be a challenge for the likes of ourselves.' As Kuhn's gets set to leave, Celtic have signed Hayato Inamura on a four-year contract after the Japanese centre-half left Albirex Niigata. The 23-year-old links up with countrymen Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate and has taken the No. 25 shirt once worn by Parkhead icon legend Shunsuke Nakamura. He said: 'He was one of my favourite players. The reason why I chose 25 is because out of the options I was given, that one really stood out to me. 'I used to imitate his kicking style when I was a kid. Many Japanese players have had success at this club. Across the world, this is a massive club and is really well known. 'I am truly excited to be joining Celtic. It's a huge opportunity for me. So far, even the current Japanese players have been performing at a high level.' Rodgers is delighted to get the Asian, but says he's not yet first-team ready and explained: 'No, he won't be. He's, again, a part of the investment of the club. "To bring a player in, we'll assess and see where he's at as a young player. And then it's whether he stays with the squad or whether he has to go out on loan.' Rodgers also confirmed Polish defender Maik Nawrocki is set for German outfit Hannover, with a loan deal mooted. He said: 'He's had a couple of years where he hasn't quite got the games that he would have liked. So it's important that he goes out and plays."
