Ex-KL Tower operator loses bid to cite minister for contempt
KUALA LUMPUR : The High Court here has dismissed an attempt by the former operator of KL Tower to initiate contempt proceedings against communications minister Fahmi Fadzil and seven others, including federal territories land and mines director general Azmi Mohd Zain.
Justice Roz Mawar Rozain ruled that the plaintiffs – Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd and Menara KL Sdn Bhd – failed to establish the commission of acts by the defendants that disrupted the administration of justice or court proceedings.
'The plaintiffs' lease expired on May 31 and (the government, named as a defendant in the proceedings) is entitled to retake possession,' the judge said when handing down her decision.
Roz Mawar added that LSH Service Master Sdn Bhd, LSH Best Builders Sdn Bhd, and Service Master (M) Sdn Bhd, also named as defendants, came in subsequently under a new concession agreement.
She ordered Hydroshoppe and Menara KL to pay a total of RM25,000 in costs to the government and LSH Service Master.
The court also dismissed an injunction application filed by Hydroshoppe against the government and LSH Service Master, holding that it had been rendered academic.
The judge ordered Hydroshoppe to pay the government and LSH Service Master an additional sum of RM40,000 as costs over the dismissal of the injunction.
The court will hear the bids by the government and LSH Service Master to strike out Hydroshoppe's lawsuit on July 14.
Hydroshoppe and Menara KL filed the suit claiming that the LSH group had induced the commission by the government of a breach of contract.
They asked the court to declare the award of the KL Tower concession to LSH Service Master void and unlawful.
They also sought an estimated RM1 billion in damages, and for the concession to be transferred back to them.
Lawyer Vinayak Sri Ram appeared for Hydroshoppe while senior federal counsel appeared for Fahmi and lawyer Malik Imtiaz Sarwar represented LSH Service Master.

Ringgit closes slightly lower against greenback

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit slipped 0.01% against the US dollar at the close, as the local note continued trading on the defensive yesterday, which offered some technical comfort for the ringgit. SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes said the ringgit is under pressure mainly because of concerns that the US Federal Reserve (Fed) might keep interest rates higher for longer, as markets reassess the inflation outlook. He added that the US dollar has strengthened recently as investors are becoming less certain that the Fed will cut rates in September. Innes also said that the dollar's recent bid reflected a subtle but growing shift in sentiment, which markets are slowly walking back their conviction that the Fed will cut the interest rate in September. 'Sticky core inflation, fuelled in part by service-sector dynamics and the slow-burn impact of tariffs, is keeping the Fed in a wait-and-see mode. 'The ringgit remains vulnerable to a temporary widening in the US-Malaysia exchange rate spread. 'This does not necessarily break the broader 4.20-4.30 range, and we are still inside expected bands for now, but it does create a bias for further weakness,' he added. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said that the ringgit weakened against the US dollar in the early morning session to 4.2575 in response to the US Consumer Price Index (CPI), which continued to increase in June to 2.7% from 2.4% previously. 'The latest CPI print appears to give the impression that the Fed may not be inclined to cut the Fed Fund Rate in the upcoming meeting in July. 'In a nutshell, the ringgit maintained its narrow-range trade in light of the ongoing uncertainties over the US tariffs,' Mohd Afzanizam said.

Muruku Bonda: The vegetarian snack that grew from a pregnancy project to a booming brand winning hearts across Malaysia, Taiwan
BUKIT MERTAJAM, July 20 — Armed with a cherished family recipe, a husband-and-wife duo turned their humble beginnings into a thriving muruku business, attracting customers from both Malaysia and abroad. Idris Alias, 67, and his wife, Fatimah Ishak, 63, from Guar Perahu, here, started their small home-based business in 1984 after she inherited a muruku recipe from her mother-in-law. 'I was seven months pregnant at the time, so we only made small batches of the crunchy snack. We had very little capital to start with. But I gave it a go, taking orders from friends. 'From those early days making muruku at home, we managed to grow the business under the brand name 'Muruku Bonda'. Nine years ago, we opened a shop in Kubang Semang, funded by profits we steadily reinvested,' Fatimah told Bernama. She said that Muruku Bonda uses natural ingredients, with no artificial colouring, and entirely free from eggs, anchovies, or any animal-based products, making it ideal for those following a vegetarian diet. Interestingly, over 85 per cent of their customers are from the Chinese community, making Chinese New Year their peak sales period. 'We even received orders from Taiwan at one point, but had to turn them down because the shipping costs were too high. Still, the customer flew over themselves and bought in bulk to take home,' she added. Idris shared that their son and daughter-in-law now help run the family business. One of their main challenges, he explained, is limited operating space, which makes it difficult to meet growing demand. They even had to decline an offer to stock Muruku Bonda in a major convenience store chain. On most days, just one frying machine is used to produce 150kg of Muruku Bonda daily at the shop in Kubang Semang, Penang, but the second fryer picks up the load for festive days when demand soars. — Bernama pic Nonetheless, the couple remain determined to expand into a larger facility in the future, with hopes of passing the business down to their only child. Bribe burning scandal: MACC identifies two more companies involved in data centre graft
KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has identified two more companies suspected of obtaining data centre construction projects by bribing the project manager of a prominent construction company who was recently arrested. According to a source, several company directors have also been identified and will be called to assist in the investigation into the case. "The investigation also found that the main suspect, the project manager, admitted to having asked for about three per cent of the project value from any company that wanted to obtain a project from a prominent construction company," he said here today. The source informed that the bribe was done by leaking the tender price and helping to ensure that the company that paid the bribe was given priority to win the tender. "This bribe was paid in stages according to the progress of the project payment and it is understood that there are several million more that have yet to be paid by the company to the suspect as per their agreement," he said. The media previously reported that a project manager of a prominent construction company who was detained for investigation into a corruption case involving the procurement of a data centre construction project tender was willing to burn almost RM1 million in cash to destroy evidence after being shocked by the MACC raid through Op Ways on Thursday. According to sources, during the raid conducted at his home in Petaling Jaya, a team of officers found RM100 banknotes totalling almost RM1 million in flames. As a result of a thorough inspection of the home, the MACC also found cash totalling approximately RM7.5 million stored in several pillow boxes, three Rolex, Omega and Cartier watches as well as jewellery such as rings and gold coins. On Friday, the media reported that a contract manager, his wife and two men in their 40s to 60s were arrested by the MACC Investigation Division around the Klang Valley, believed to be involved in corruption involving the procurement of a data centre construction project tender in Johor worth approximately RM180 million. — Bernama
