Hundreds of athletes from Manitoba will go for gold starting next week in St. John's at the 2025 Canada Summer Games.
Team Manitoba is sending 374 athletes to the Games, which run from Aug. 8-25.
"I'm ecstatic," said Team Manitoba baseball player Piper Hollywood. "This is so crazy to me, and I'm so excited."
Hollywood and her teammates will be part of history at the Games, with women's baseball making its debut at the event.
The 15-year-old also hopes she and her teammates can be an inspiration to future generations of young girls who play baseball.
"It means so much to me. It means so much to all the girls. We've all worked so extremely hard," she said.
"I think we're just excited to be there. We're excited to show everyone what we have."
Some of the athletes helped unveil team uniforms Tuesday morning during a ceremony at the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame inside the Sport Manitoba facility on Pacific Avenue.
Kayaker Luke Enns, 19, was announced as the team's flag-bearer for next week's opening ceremony.
"It's such an honour," he said. "For me, it symbolizes the connection between all the sports and all the teams that will be competing at the Games, so it's an honour to have that opportunity."
Team Manitoba will showcase family ties on the wrestling mat, with Jordan Blais coached by his dad, Dominick.
"My dad has just been so dedicated and so disciplined with how he's learning the sport. He's been studying it, looking at high-level videos, high-level wrestling," he said.
"I think his technique has surpassed mine already," said Blais. "I'm just very thankful to have him as my coach and someone that I can look up to."
Although wrestling is relatively new for Dominick Blais, he's no stranger to combat sports, with a 10-5-0 professional mixed martial arts record. He also holds a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
He took up wrestling with Jordan and his daughter when they were young, he said.
"It brings the family very close," Dominick said. "It's a passion that everybody shares. We've been travelling a lot together, and now coaching is my work, but it doesn't really feel like work."
Jordan said competing at the Games can also help athletes get recognized for future opportunities in their sport.
"Many of my friends from last Canada Games, they got recruited because of the Canada Games," he said. "This is really important. You've got to stay in the mindset of 'Your future is in your hands.'"

Marseille signs Brazilian winger Paixão from Feyenoord to boost attacking options

Ligue 1 club Marseille has bolstered its attack by signing Brazilian winger Igor Paixão from Feyenoord in a deal that could rise to 35 million euros ($40.6 million). The 25-year-old Paixão scored 18 goals in 47 games last season and was voted the Dutch player of the season. Marseille beat competition from newly promoted Premier League team Leeds to sign him. Marseille announced the deal late Friday without giving further details, but French media reports valued the deal at 30 million euros with an additional 5 million in performance-related bonuses. Marseille paid a club-record 32 million euros to Portuguese club Braga to sign forward Vitinha in early 2023. Vitinha failed to settle and scored only six goals in 43 games before being sold to Genoa. Paixão showed his full repertoire of skills during a Champions League game against AC Milan in February, scoring in a 1-0 win and giving the Milan defense a torrid time all game with his quickness. Marseille finished second in Ligue 1 last season behind Paris Saint-Germain and qualified directly for the Champions League. Marseille coach Roberto De Zerbi has made several moves in the transfer market this summer, including bringing back veteran striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Al-Qadsiah in the Saudi Pro League. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. The 36-year-old Aubameyang scored 21 goals for Al-Qadsiah last season, after having spent the 2023-24 campaign at Marseille — where he netted 30 goals overall and became a fan favorite in the southern port city. Attacking midfielder Angel Gomes joined from Lille and gritty central defender Facundo Medina arrived from Lens. The arrivals of Aubameyang and Paixão bring extra firepower to an attack that already features Mason Greenwood — who scored 21 league goals last season and Amine Gouiri. Marseille opens the new Ligue 1 season when it travels all the way up the country to face Brittany-based Rennes on Aug. 15. ___ AP soccer:

Calgary Yacht Club youth members prepare to tackle the waves at Canada Summer Games sailing competition

Members of the Calgary Yacht Club practice in anticipation of the Canada Summer Games which take place in Newfoundland starting Aug. 9 The Calgary Yacht Club has five youth members who are heading for Newfoundland to compete in the Canada Summer Games. Team members will compete against teams from other provinces in a number of events. Team coach Eugene Dombrowsky said in an interview with CTV News that competing at the national level is a big step forward for the club. "Its not an every year thing,' Dombrowsky said. 'It's a big event. 'All the boats will be measured, all the athletes tested for illegal substances – everything will be very formal so it will be a great thing for the athletes to participate because they will be exposed to the highest level of competition." The complicating factor? For a yacht club that practices on Lake Chestermere, going to Newfoundland to sail will mean learning how to adjust to waves and currents. 'We went to B.C. a few times to sail,' said team member Samuel Meirau, 'to try and train in the ocean -- and I think that's helped a lot because we've been able to sail in currents.' Meirau is in his fourth year sailing and said he's looking forward to being out in Newfoundland water. 'I hope to have a lot of fun and experience the waves and the wind, because I've never really sailed in waterways with a 29er' -- a high performance, two-person sailing skiff -- 'before,' he said. Jillian Glendinning also started sailing four years ago. 'There was a summer camp here at Calgary Yacht Club and I showed up to that and started sailing, (then) joined the race team – and haven't stopped since," Glendinning said. 'It was mostly the community that brought me to it. Everyone is so nice. That's the biggest part. The sailing just kind of came with it, which was fun.' As far as representing the club at the Canada Summer Games, Glendinning says bring it on. 'It's fun to represent Alberta and it will be cool to have a competition outside of our province,' she said. 'We've done some other regattas outside (the province), but this one is going to be the biggest one yet.' Dombrowsky said the best thing about sailing is that it's both easy to learn and takes a lifetime to perfect. 'Sailing itself is not nuclear physics,' Dombrowsky said. 'It's a number of very simple skills. You just need to do some multi-tasking – you just need to do several things simultaneously." As far as the Alberta team's chances, he says his landlocked sailors may have their work cut out for themselves. 'They will be challenged, because Ontario and B.C. teams in sailing are very strong as well as Quebec and Nova Scotia,' he said. 'So unfortunately, I must say we will be underdogs here – but we'll do our best!' For more about the Calgary Yacht Club, go here.
